    Interesting election anecdote... (5.00 / 2) (#10)
by magster on Sat Oct 27, 2012 at 01:46:15 PM EST
... as I was loitering at an IHOP in suburban Denver while my daughter was going through one of those seasonal haunted houses. 2 slightly tipsy college girls (judging by how loud they were talking) talked about how they were going to vote for Obama, one saying that she thought Republican men were creepy and specifically referencing Akin, the other talking about how she was dependent on student aid and that if she "had to borrow money from her parents" she wouldn't be in school right now.

Interesting to see what absorbs into the masses. As these girls looked to be about 19, I doubt they make it past many likely voter screens.

    U.S. Set to Sponsor Health Insurance (5.00 / 2) (#13)

The national plans will compete directly with other private insurers and may have some significant advantages, including a federal seal of approval. Premiums and benefits for the multistate insurance plans will be negotiated by the United States Office of Personnel Management, the agency that arranges health benefits for federal employees.

Walton J. Francis, the author of a consumer guide to health plans for federal employees, said the personnel agency had been "extraordinarily successful" in managing that program, which has more than 200 health plans, including about 20 offered nationwide. The personnel agency has earned high marks for its ability to secure good terms for federal workers through negotiation rather than heavy-handed regulation of insurers.

John J. O'Brien, the director of health care and insurance at the agency, said the new plans would be offered to individuals and small employers through the insurance exchanges being set up in every state under the 2010 health care law.

We all blithely assume to know what God really wants, because after all, that's what we also want and that's why He's on our side.

Therefore, each of us remains steadfastly determined to tell the other that my respective God is bigger than your respective God, and further, that my God really wants me to kick your a$$ if you fail to bend to His will and do exactly as I say and want, because after all, I am of my own God's chosen people, and thus I am His instrument on His Earth.

But in the meantime, I think the Great Spirit Mother is actually firing up Her bong with primo herb while listening to some equally primo Lucky Dube, mocking to the eternal delight of Her heavenly angels both our pretentious folly and grievously false sense of moral superiority, for we fail to comprehend that truly, we exist on Her Earth solely for Her own detached bemusement, and nothing more.

Every once in a while, when She becomes somewhat bored or annoyed with us, She will endeavor to remind us of our own cosmic insignificance by occasionally inflicting upon us, with ever-increasing intensity, some pending catastrophe or instantaneous calamity, through the process that some enlightened and sentient beings amongst us recognize as "Global Warming."

But always the merry prankster, She has also created Fox News and the right-wing media to try and convince us, strictly for Her own bemusement, that She is really a He, and that further, He wants us to know that She doesn't really exist, so everybody let's all please move on and keep doing exactly what we're doing, because there's really nothing to see here.

    Aloha. ;-)

I've got to be out of my mind lock of the day.

There is a good reason BTD avoided the spreads on the top ranked teams this week. But I'll dive in with one of them.

The Oregon Ducks were shutout in the 2nd half last week and are still a 47 point favorite this week against Colorado. It's hard to put your money on a terrible team on the road like Colorado, but to win the bet taking the Ducks you probably have to count on the Ducks scoring 9 touchdowns...yes 9.

I can see why BTD took a pass.

I think the Ducks will strap on their Nike's and run like Steve Prefontaine all over the lumbering Buffaloes.

string players in the game in the second half when the Ducks have a big lead. So, during those games, like last week, I find myself yelling at some poor third-string defensive lineman because he's not playing up to snuff.  :-)

I understand why Chip does this. It's good experience for those players, and it protects the starters from injury. Still, I hate it when the other team scores on Oregon.

And with 11 minutes left in the game the Ducks lead 70-14. I think you just might win, CG.

    But the Ducks scored 43 in the 1st half ... (none / 0) (#17)
by Donald from Hawaii on Sat Oct 27, 2012 at 04:54:07 PM EST
... last week. They didn't need any more and saw no need to run up the score, so they took their foot off the accelerator and let the reserves garner some playing time.

I'm not a fan of coaches who run up the score and rub it in merely for its own sake. I think it shows a lack of class and character. I fully realize that Sagarin's computer models love that sort of $Hi+ for the rankings, but honestly, I don't see any hard drives sitting in the grandstands with a beer and pompoms.

True story: I attended a Hawaii state high school basketball championship game about 15 years ago between St. Louis and Kalaheo. At the time, St. Louis High School was an 11-time defending state champion and Top 10 national power in high school football, and its coach and team were notorious for running up scores on weaker opponents -- I mean, we're talking up to 80 points or more a game if they could. Talk about winning ugly!

Well, probably 90% of St. Louis' basketball team was made up of football players, the football coach was also served as the school's athletic director, and the alumni were the type of people who just loved to see their team pour it on and rub it in.

But unfortunately for St. Louis players and fans that night, this was not a football game. In fact, Kalaheo was a major power in their own right in local high school basketball and was clearly St. Louis' superior, eventually winning more than easily by 48 points in what can only be characterized as a major beatdown. It still stands as the biggest rout in state basketball championship history.

(Interestingly, the record margin of victory for a championship game which Kalaheo broke that night, actually dated back to the 38-point hurt that Barack Obama and his Punahou teammates inflicted on Moanalua High School in the 1979 state finals.)

Afterward, amid the disappointment and tears of his players, students and alumni, the angry St. Louis football coach / AD bitterly (and hypocritically) complained to the local media about the Kalaheo coach's lack of class for continuing to play his starters and running up the score, long after the game was so obviously well in hand.

When asked by the media to respond to those charges, Kalaheo's basketball coach merely looked at the cameras and said calmly without emotion, "Finally, they [St. Louis] all now know exactly how it feels to be humiliated like that, and on the receiving end for a change."

Most high school sports fans out here probably could not have agreed any more with such sentiments.

I was actually kind of laughing at myself. I hate it when teams run up the score. I don't mean when teams get off a good run in the 4th quarter and end of with the big score. i mean when it is clearly a blow-out by the start of the 3rd quarter, and the coach does not pull the starters out.

I just love seeing the Ducks score. And I just hate seeing the other team score on the Ducks. When my reasoning adult mind is in charge, I applaud this move by Chip. When my emotional crazed fan is in charge I hate it. And I yell at the third stringers.

I'm not proud of it, but that's the way it is.  :-)

The highest scoring game I've ever seen personally in an NCAA D-1 game is Hawaii's 72-45 win over previously unbeaten and No. 5-ranked BYU in the 2001 season finale at Aloha Stadium.

The Warriors' average scoring drive lasted 95 seconds, with QB Nick Rolovich throwing for 8 TDs and 604 yards.

And honestly, the score could have been much, much worse for the Cougars, when you consider that Hawaii also turned the ball over four times in BYU's red zone.

The nationally-televised game is also memorable because ESPN caught a lot of flack from viewers when they decided to cut away late in the third quarter to show a golf tournament, after Rolovich threw his seventh TD pass for a 65-28 Hawaii lead.

    Los Angeles Times | October 26, 2012
Romney spends big on firms tied to aides - "Mitt Romney's campaign has directed $134.2 million to political firms with business ties to his senior staff, spotlighting the tightknit nature of his second presidential bid and the staggering sums being spent in this election. Nine firms that are run by, or recently employed, top Romney aides have received almost a third of the $435.8 million that Romney's campaign and a related fundraising committee have spent on operating expenses through Oct. 17, according to a Los Angeles Times analysis of federal election finance reports."

by Politalkix on Sat Oct 27, 2012 at 07:40:11 PM EST
We have to rack up the margins for the President even in deep blue states. link

A win in the electoral college that is not accompanied by one in the popular vote casts a shadow over the president and his ability to govern.

If Obama were to be re-elected that way, "the Republican base will be screaming that Romney should be president, and Obama doesn't represent the country," McKinnon said. "It's going to encourage more hyperpartisanship."

Veterans of the Bush White House understand that problem well. Bush was never able to shake the accusations of some Democrats that he had "stolen" the 2000 election in a recount of Florida votes that required a U.S. Supreme Court decision to determine the winner. Then-Vice President Al Gore had won the popular vote that year by 500,000 votes.

"A close election is a polarizing event, and a discrepancy between the popular outcome and the electoral vote only adds to the polarization," said Karen Hughes, who served as a counselor to Bush. "It rubs a raw nerve even rawer."

    'Worst of all ... outcomes'

And that kind of split decision may well happen more often in the future, if the nation's political system remains both deeply and closely divided.

Bush 'winning' in 2000 was what it took for Democratic states to start passing laws to award their EVs to the popular vote winner. Maybe Obama winning the EC but losing the popular vote would get Republican states on board; Texas would be a huge get.

and went full steam ahead.  Dems (especially elected Dems) turned the page and moved forward.  We're comparing the party that impeached Clinton and succumbed to birtherism to the party that never held Bush accountable for anything illegal he did in office.  In other words, there is no comparison.

had geedee better stand up and protest.

By my count, we've had three GOP election thefts in my lifetime.  The first we didn't know about until years later, the second looked suspicious and was confirmed as such a decade later. The third and most brazen, 2000, we again took in the shorts with little protest.

No more Mr NiceDem if we have another.

Bush was never able to shake the accusations of some Democrats that he had "stolen" the 2000 election...

I don't think he cared one whit what some Democrats thought.

He took control from day one.
It was like a coup d'etat.

Then, as president, he got absolutely everything he wanted.
    Whatever laws, and whatever wars.
The democrats rolled over for him.

Even when they won the house and senate in 2006, instead of withdrawing troops from Iraq as they were mandated to do, they rolled over for Bush and sent even more troops.

    So, no.
Nobody then or now gave him any trouble about his victory in 2000.
He was awarded the presidency, and took it and ran with it and didn't give a damn what anybody thought about it - especially democrats.

You do great disservice to yourself by posting non-factual hyperbole. GWB got his tax cuts, wars and his torture. He did not get to privatise SS and Rumsfield resigned after 2006 and scooter libby was sent to prison for 30 months.
This constant whining "they got everything under Bush" and "we got nothing under BHO" and "BHO is no different than GWB" is non-factual and undermines your credibility.
I do agree with the view that we should ignore Republican whining, however it will certainly help if BHO wins the EV and PV and we keep control of the Senate and win back the house. All efforts should be made to achieve this end.

Libby was sentenced to 30 months in prison, but that sentence was commuted by G. Bush. He never spent time in prison, but the remaining portions of his conviction and sentence remained intact.

    He was eventually also disbarred.

Republicans are gearing up for a contingency that the president wins re-election in the electoral college  but not the  popular vote and, hence, that would be an "illegitimate" victory.   A difficulty for their scenario is reference to the election of 2000 where Gore won the popular vote, and the electoral college vote went to Bush (thanks to a little help from the SC).  Hence, the recent recap of that election claiming that Gore's popular vote was not :statistically significant"  and does not, literally count.

Ohio.  Kasich was on Meet the Press this morning and said he was certain Romney was going to win Ohio.  Tagg Romney is in with the voting machine companies who flip the votes.  People are really talking about it over on Nate Silver's site at the NY Times.  Obama and the Dems will not roll over as Gore did in 2000.  Obama has led every serious poll out of Ohio for months.  And still leads by about 4 in every major, reputable poll.  Romney can't win without Ohio.

The commentators broke in to say that the game was being broadcast by the Armed Forces Network to our men and women in uniform in 175 countries around the world.

    true.

Now if the announcers could only concentrate on what was going on on the field, instead of yapping incessantly about what transpired 50 years ago, about somebody's statistics, about themselves...

    That would help.

But they smother the game with an incessant drone of babble.
You would never know that this was a World Series game.

election where someone will be fighting for nothing but the white vote?  I've read several writings out there saying it is so, that from here on nobody can win the U.S. Presidency with just the white vote.  I hope so.  I'm sick of it and it sucks and the discourse has led to some people down here talking unspeakable crap.

Yesterday Josh tells me that his white Science teacher told his whole class this past week that the disparity you see when you look at white and black life expectancy in this country is due to the fact that black people have a weaker immune system.  He said that there are 5 students in his class who instantly got a scared look on their face because their inferior immune system has numbered their days.

I saw this teacher Friday night at Publix and she had her son with her and she is very vocal about how disappointed she is in his daily behavior.  She tells me as he's walking to the car that he had better get used to working because he was born with two strikes against him...he's white and he's male.  What does that mean?

I have never heard people talk this stupid in public in my whole life, just get this crap over with and finally end the white vote $hit because I'm not sure I can ever deal with this again!!!!
