NYPD Documents Show Spying on Liberal Groups

The AP has released documents showing the NYPD Intelligence Division infiltrated and spied on liberal groups. Some activists are mentioned by name. The officers attended meetings, rallies and after-parties.

Here's a sample document.

More documents are available at the Associated Press website here.

have an intelligence division that infiltrates and spies on all types of groups.  Now with the killing to Trayvon Martin than can sneak into neighborhood community watch meetings as well.

has been deleted for (1) insults, implying others here are "on drugs" and (2) presenting false information as facts.

    From the Chicago Tribune:

George Zimmerman, who coordinated the Neighborhood Watch at a town-house community in Sanford...

According to Wendy Dorival, who coordinates volunteer programs, including Neighborhood Watch, for the Sanford police:

The Neighborhood Watch at Retreat at Twin Lakes, where Zimmerman lived and was coordinator, was formed in September, Dorival said. It is not registered with the national group, but there is no registration requirement. The Sanford Police Department provides training and community signs, and informs residents about crime trends and prevention.

Zimmerman raised no red flags during an organizational meeting Sept. 22, and no one had complained about him before the shooting, Dorival said.

    And:

Coordinators such as Zimmerman assign block captains, act as liaisons to their law-enforcement agency's crime-prevention specialist and disseminate information to residents. They often are described as an extra set of eyes and ears for officers who can't be everywhere at once.

...on the right wing militias, or any right wing groups.  Seems like I remember the Tea Party doing the same type of organizing as the left a few years back.

we don't have many right-wing groups in NY, and I'm sure they NYPD is surveilling the few we do.

They surveil anything that moves, well almost anything...Wall St. banksters are the only exemption I'm aware of.

...they are going to New Orleans but they can't go upstate where there are plenty of right wing extremists, neo-nazi's, and other far more dangerous folks lefty protesters.

My comment wasn't actually specified to NYPD, how come they, as in the people who are always pulling the cr@p, are always getting busted infiltrating the left, and never the far more dangerous right.

I know, 1)because they are dangerous and their filtering process is a little stringent. 2)they are cowards, and infiltrating groups with guns would require a level of dangerousness that I am sure they don't like. 3) the obvious, some how nuts with guns in fatigues aren't in their eyes near as dangerous as dirty hippies.

    I dunno (5.00 / 1) (#6)

I get the feeling this is like the unemployment numbers that are "always" revised down afterwards.  The funny thing is if you look at it as a whole, it's revised up just as often, you just don't hear about it when it is.

What I'm getting at is that this may be partly due to selective news reading/reporting.  I do recall seing an article that talked about the increase in right-wing hate groups since Obama was elected.  They wouldn't know about that unless someone was watching.

Study: Hate of Obama fuels 755% growth in extremist groups

The number of groups in the anti-government "Patriot" movement have sky rocketed 755 percent since President Barack Obama has been elected, the Southern Poverty Law Center's (SPLC) yearly report found.

"These groups are becoming more and more aware as they watch the primary season unfold that Obama is fairly likely to win and some of them are having meltdowns over this," Southern Poverty Law Center senior fellow Mark Potok told Raw Story. "They're looking at four more years under a very hated black president -- hated by them. So, we're seeing signs of real anger over that. People saying we're at war already, saying go out and buy AK-47s and hollow-point bullets, get tools to derail trains."

Name one time when the authorities were caught spying on some sort of right organization when they shouldn't have been.

I can name like 4 or 5 in the past year in regards to the left, off the top of my head.

I realize that some groups need surveillance and infiltration on both sides, just seems like the left is far more suspect.  Equivalent groups on the right, like the Tea party, is not suspect.

This article outlines how our colleges and universities have been turned into arms of the security state. Department of Homeland Security is watching your college kids -- and not in a nice way.

    Scary stuff.
