You were asking about dental implants....I have one for one of my front teeth. It is a marvel what they were able to do. I cracked the original tooth when I was a kid and over the many years the root cracked too and the gums would get messed up around it. what they did about 8 years ago was extract the tooth slowly using orthodontia, so that the bone would grow back and fill in the socket and they would not have to use any tissue or fake bone. Then they did the implant and a crown. The implant procedure itself was not bad, except for the gum work they also did. Ick. That all had to heal for a month or so before they could put on the permanent crown. Now looking at iit you would never know it was not real.

If you were able to do it in Denver I could recommend an excellent team.

I never know what might be coming for me, I have a challenging mouth :)  I hope Zorba's implant goes more smoothly than her first one.

Fascinating how they successfully encouraged the bone to grow with yours.

If and when they come up with a good ankle joint replacement, that will probably be where Joshua is headed.  They removed his Talus though, and Dr. Siegel in Colorado Springs said that he would probably need some kind of bone graft for that replacement off in the future sometime.

Does he really get paid for this work? (5.00 / 2) (#12)
by Militarytracy on Wed Mar 07, 2012 at 08:10:50 AM EST
    That he doesn't do?

I worked for several years in the business office at a County Hospital in Wyoming.  I remember the transition to profits driven  occurring, where even County hospitals became profit driven via their boards and their top tier executives.

First, our new administrator who had no hands on medical experience in anything at all and only an MBA decided that instead of $70,000 a year, he needed to be paid $150,000 a year and this was in about 1992.

The hospital administrator used to pick up his morning paper in the business office every morning when he managed to wander through the front door.  I went to high school with the newest member of the maintenance crew, and being responsible for hospital maintenance is no small thing.  But the new maintenance guy walks into the business office one morning, grabs a pen and furiously scrawls across the frontpage of the morning paper announcing the hospital administrator now getting paid $156,000 a year a comment that the hospital had its own million dollar man for mostly keeping a chair warm.  He threw the pen down, scowled at me (no need to do that, I'm not saying anything....I don't know how that got on there, it isn't my writing).

Then shortly after that I had a day when I was reconciling a recent Medicare payment.  I worked very hard, but I always had to when doing office work because it is so boring for me I need to distract myself.  Anyhow, when I was done reconciling the payment it ended up that my bank deposit was over a million dollars for the day.  When you do numbers all day though, it's just a number, but the next day the financial officer and the administrator acted like I had finished a marathon or something and so had they....we ran it together and I didn't even know.  We didn't preform a surgery or deliver a baby or stop anyone's heart attack but somehow we were rock stars.

Then I was reading the minutes from the latest board meeting shortly after that, and there was a whole segment about how they planned to prevent any midwife outfit from moving into the area.  They were working out a plan of attack.  I was reading it and I didn't realize I wasn't supposed to be reading it while making copies, and when the assistant administrator walked in and I started to ask him why they would work to shutdown a midwife down he snatched the notes out of my hands and told me I had no business reading that.

The reason WHY medical care costs so much in the United States is the additional fee Harvard Business School charges all of us for warming administrative chairs while providing NOT ONE OTHER SINGLE SERVICE THAT GIVES ANYONE ACTUAL HEALTHCARE AND ACTUALLY PREVENTS SOME FROM RECEIVING NEEDED CARE.

It is so sad to see how NOT SMART Ezra is again!

He's saying that where the system is breaking down is hidden from patients, where the real costs are coming from is hidden from patients and everyone except those close to the "books" of healthcare facilities. And as nurses are cutback and replaced with nurses aides who really aren't competent in what MBAs are trying to make them preform, patients don't see how the whole system is about to crash on a basic tasks level.  And as nonprofits are about to have to accept bundled payments that are barely more than zero, things are getting worse and worse for everyone but the MBAs and you the patient probably doesn't know that the whole system outside of the MBA salaries is bordering on monetarily bankrupt and about to crash too.

Nobody sees the MBAs though, you never see them and their names aren't on your medical records any place either. But they HAVE EVERYONE'S MONEY FOR NOTHING right now and have taken it for years and years.  They bear no actual burden of responsibility though and when you view your medical history as it exists digitally or in writing they are phantoms getting paid thousands of times what your doctor is even making.

the conduit of cash keeps flowing, unimpeded, into the pockets of investors - that's the "performance" that is driving this wreck of a medical system, not the actual health of the patients.

What I hear from people working on the front lines of actual care in hospital settings is enough to make me hope I never need to go into one.  And if I do, that I have an army of family to ride herd on the people in charge of my care - if you don't have someone to speak for you, you could be screwed.

I live in an area where you can't swing a dead cat without hitting someone in the medical field - and they are all competing fiercely for the same patient population, building this center and that pavilion and going to concierge services and all-private rooms.  We're supposed to think that all of that improves the quality of care, but the truth is they are all cutting nurse-to-patient ratios, which isn't accomplishing that.

And anyone who thinks the ACA is going to make a dent in this grossly dysfunctional system is smoking something I want to take a few hits off of.

by KeysDan on Wed Mar 07, 2012 at 09:53:27 AM EST
he is a dutiful stenographer and, often, mindless political conduit.  So, the issue is one of his "experts".   As I have long maintained, health care is and will be expensive and it does not necessarily yield to the economies of progress.  Health care economists need a better appreciation of health care and economics, on the micro and macro levels.

An interesting example, is that experts have long argued that computerized patient records will save money in all manner of ways, including reducing the number of redundant or inappropriate tests.  Indeed, this was a key means by which Medicare "savings" would be made to help support the Affordable Care Act--and the justification for federal support to encourage electronic record keeping in doctor's offices.

However, a recent study in Health Affairs, by Dr. Dan McCormick of Harvard Medical School, has suggested that office-based physicians who have electronic records are more likely (by 70 percent in the case of advance imaging and tests) to order additional tests.

The progress gained does improve practice by integrating and coordinating assessments, histories, treatments and medication management.  Electronic records may avoid redundant tests, but they may also uncover needed tests that have fallen between the bar stools.  So, clearly, electronic records improve health care, but much less clearly,  for cost containment.

The cheerleaders for the progress from electronic records as a gigantic cost saver without adequate consideration given to the health care progress and associated costs may be required to take another look at their assumptions.

"There are serious health risks and side effects associated with taking these treatments and I want to make sure that the fragile and vulnerable men of our country understand all of the factors before they take the drugs." To that end, Turner's legislature includes language to ensure men understand both the ramifications of their sexual health decisions, and, Turner said, "to make sure they understand that there are other options out there, whether they're natural remedies or celibacy."

"The men in the policy making positions of this country have spent a generous amount of time working to protect the well-being of women through their reproductive health," said Turner, "I thought it was only fair that we look out for men in the same way."

Who knows how long they'll keep they're ads pulled, but it's a nice start.

    As I understand it, from reading (5.00 / 3) (#23)
by Anne on Wed Mar 07, 2012 at 09:42:13 AM EST
d-day this morning, some of these advertisers don't specifically advertise on the show, but whatever ads they place with a local station are placed at the discretion of the station - which is what happened with the GEICO ads.

What this means is - and this is the headache that may cause some stations to just drop the show - stations now have to keep track of which businesses advertising on this basis do not wish to have their ads placed within the time period when Limbaugh's show airs.

Here in Baltimore, there is a local station that airs the show - WCBM - and this was their response to the "campaign" to get advertisers to pull their ads:

Though national advertisers are fleeing Rush Limbaugh after he called a birth control activist a slut, Baltimore seems immune to the exodus.

Executives at WCBM, 680 AM, the affiliate that airs the Rush Limbaugh show locally, said Tuesday that not a single advertiser has dropped out.

    Oh, really?

However, Bob Pettit, the station's general manager, did tell the Sun that some advertisers did "postpone" their ads on Limbaugh's show because of the controversy. He would not say which advertisers.

And is it conservatives who have objected to the Limbaugh remarks?  Of course not...it's the e-vil liberals:

Pettit chalked up the few complaints the station did get to "a group of liberal activists."

"We have had a number of calls and emails from a group of liberal activists in their attempt to silence the voice of conservative radio," he said. "Most of these people never listen to WCBM or Rush and it is clear to our Rush sponsors that they don't represent the WCBM listener or their customers."

If you're a conservative activist, though, you can join Brent Bozell in his new online effort: "I Stand With  Rush:"

Brent Bozell, the president and founder of the conservative Media Research Center, has launched a website in support of Rush Limbaugh in the wake of fallout over his attack on Sandra Fluke, because, as Bozell says, "this isn't about what Rush said last week, it's about roaring hypocrisy and it's about censorship."

"Make no mistake about it -- there is a concerted effort under way to remove Rush Limbaugh from the airwaves. To remove all conservative voices from the airwaves. And the liberal media are putting all of their weight behind it," Bozell says.

The site also asks supporters to sign a petition pledging their support to Limbaugh:

"I stand with Rush Limbaugh and appreciate the massive contribution that he has made to the conservative movement and our nation over the last 25 years. Rush has apologized. But the radical left will never accept it because they despise him and want him off the air. I condemn attempts by radical left-wing organizations and the media to censor Rush and his commonsense conservative message."

Here's my take:  Rush is free, as we all are, to say whatever he wants about anyone he wants.  But advertisers are also free to decide they don't want to support the dissemination of Rush's views.  That is, if I'm not mistaken, the free market at work, something I believe conservatives like Limbaugh fully support - except, apparently, when it negatively affects their own bank accounts.

All the "radical left" is doing is helping hoist this massive contributor on a petard of his own making.

In other words: karma's a bitch.

"But this is the mistake I made: In fighting them on this issue last week, I became like them," he told his listeners on Monday. "Against my own instincts, against my own knowledge, against everything I know to be right and wrong, I descended to their level when I used those two words to describe Sandra Fluke. That was my error."

He continued: "I feel very badly about that. I've always tried to maintain a very high degree if integrity and independence on this program. Nevertheless, those two words were inappropriate."

"I acted too much like the leftists who despise me. ... It's what we know and have come to expect from them, but it's way beneath me."

Well. this married, almost-60 (but white) woman is laughing out loud at Rush's latest excuse for why he did what he did.

If I were Rush, I'd be wary of educated people, too, because it obviously gets in the way of his selling his brand of ignorance, but really, how much education does one need to see, feel and hear the hate that daily spews from this man -  and others of his ilk?

How much education does one need to see how much this man hates women?  He tries to couch some of it in terms of hating all this government we leftists have imposed on everyone, but it really comes down to hate - in this case, his virulent hatred of women.

I guess we can be glad of one thing: Rush doesn't have children; I like to think that's the universe's way of making sure he doesn't pee - or worse - in the gene pool.  But in case the universe isn't enough, this taxpayer would gladly contribute some of her hard-earned money to make sure Rush Limbaugh is always well-supplied with contraception and never reproduces.

They're now making sure that none of their commercials will run on his show.

Sears and Kmart did not intentionally advertise on the Rush Limbaugh show. Sears Holdings has taken actions to ensure our ads do not run on this show.

    Oops!

    (again!)

...and on Rush ?  And he is cool with it...

I don't recognize a lot of those brands, so they must be local or regional.

It must really suck to be in one of these markets departments, one week the left is on you, the next the right.  And I doubt may specify times slots, they pay on listener/viewer numbers and have little control when their ads are played.

really nails it.  I haven't figured out where the satire is yet in this one.

"Voters Slowly Realizing Santorum Believes Every Deranged Word That Comes Out Of His Mouth"

""I mean, with the other guys, you can dig into their past and find at least some shred of rational thinking, even if they're cynically downplaying it now," Gallardo continued. "But I get the sense Santorum is speaking nothing but his completely unfiltered thoughts. I know it's weird to say this about a politician, but I sort of wish he were lying to my face at least a little.""

Redistricting put Democrats Kucinich and Marcy Kaptur in the same district and going head-to-head in today's primary. Kaptur won. Come January, Kucinich will bout of office.

Kaptur got 60% of the vote. (none / 0) (#5)

Rewarded with being awake now.  Super Tuesday looks like it leaves the Republicans with the foggy lead of Romney.  Funny how Wyoming and Idaho both have a discernible Mormon population and also have a discernible lack of magic underwear fear.  Never saw Oklahoma breaking Santorum.

Oklahoma--the State where the Randall Terry got 18% of the vote and was awarded a delegate in the Democratic primary?

I would have been shocked in Pope Richard I would have lost there.  The same goes for Kansas.
