Good Samaritans in Denver Rescue Prominent Defense Lawyer

Gary Lozow is one of Denver's most prominent criminal defense attorneys and a terrific guy. Yesterday morning, a driver ran a red light at a busy intersection and crashed into his car, sending it upside down into a creek, where it became submerged in water, with Gary locked inside. Here's the video.

Passersby and two security guards from an adjacent medical center jumped down a 14 foot embankment to reach the car, got it unlocked using a block of concrete they found, and pulled Gary, who was unconscious, out of his vehicle. The water was so cold, one of the rescuers required medical attention. Another seriously injured his leg. The creek was so high, had he not been pulled quickly from the car, he would have drowned. [More...]

“There was a person on every door and the front and the back of the car, and it was incredible. They literally pried that car open with their bare hands,” Peters said. Firefighters and rescue crews said they were surprised that Lozow made it out alive.

Gary has broken ribs and a broken hand, and reports from the hospital that he'll be okay.

Duane " Dog The Bounty Hounter" Chapman and his wife Beth issued a statement of thanks to the rescuers:

“Gary Lozow has been not only my lawyer but my friend he has represented me since I’m 16 years old.” Dog said that Lozow has been an important person in his family’s life for years. “He has been by my side through some of the biggest battles of my life. A father figure to both of us”.

Good work, Denverites. My best wishes to Gary and his wife Joyce for Gary's speedy recovery.

if he was a friend of yours.

Very, very lucky that he was just yards away from one of the very best trauma centers in the World!

Get well wishes to Mr. Lozow and the rescuers who suffered injuries!

But I have to say I almost feel a little nostalgic for the old name of Denver General.  I suppose that name doesn't call to mind World Class Trauma Center (which it is) as much Denver Health Medical Center does.

It will always be Denver General to me.  One of my besties from Iowa (and roommate at the time) was the nurse manager of the ER back in the 80's/90's.  All the nurses who worked there were like family--and some of the best people you'd ever want to meet.

It was also know as the Knife and Gun Club (for obvious reasons) to those who worked there (and myself as an honorary member).  I think I still have the t-shirt around here somewhere...

on Dog the Bounty Hunter deleted. It contained a potentially libelous accusation and he is a friend of mine. Personal attacks are not allowed on this site, especially to friends of mine.

3 19/20 year olds died in a car crash a few blocks from my house this morning.  They haven't released the names yet but I already know that one of them is a friend of a friend.  Glad yours made it.

I'm more worried about said friend/neighbor.  She lost her sister a few years ago and seems to be having a generally rough go of it.  That, and I'm anxiously awaiting the other names.  I don't know as many 20 year olds as I use to, but it's a high speed road, and it brings up some bad memories of when I did.

That makes my heart hurt.  I've lost very close family in a car crash.  What happened to them was terrible.  I'd never thought about it before then, about what the body goes through to die in an auto accident.  It's really, really bad.

One thing that surprised me was the pain I felt when I thought about the gawkers passing by.  As a result I am now de-gawkerized.  People can get arrested or get a ticket or have an auto accident without me trying to see what's going on.

My heart goes out to the family.  I wish them peace, but it may be long in coming, I fear.

red-light at the exact same spot. I pushed the break so hard, my seat back broke. I'm surprised I didn't bend the steering wheel like John Candy did in Planes Trains and Automobiles.

Those diaganol streets like Speer Blvd can be tricky intersections to control.

    Wow. Glad you're okay (none / 0) (#11)
