Happy Mothers Day and Open Thread

There's something so universal about Mother's Day. Everyone on this planet at one time had a mother. Many still do, many are mothers, many are married to mothers and many aspire to be mothers.

One of Denver's early public defenders, now deceased, used to say about his clients who had done terrible things: "There's something good to say about every one, even if it's only that their mother loved them." [More...]

In my case, who knew this little guy

Would grow up so soon and make me so proud?

To all you mothers out there, Happy Mother's Day. If your mom is still around, be thankful, and don't forget to call her. Even if she's not, you can still take out a photo or look up at the sky and tell her hello. Wherever she is, she's probably thinking of you too.

What do you have planned today? This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

for still being awake.  I will not bring that up when I call her later.  Nice post and happy Mother's Day to Jeralyn and all the mothers on this board.  I hope your love and patience do not go unappreciated :)

Happy Mothers Day to you and all the TL Moms. Hold your moms close if you can. No one loves you like your mother.

This will be one of the days I hope my mother can see me from the great beyond! I will 'face time' her on the cosmos wide web.

I like your sharing of "There's something good about everyone".

My guys are making me breakfast right now.  And I get Mimosa too because we have a little leftover champagne from my daughter's wedding.

And Happy Mother's Day to my Mom.  I have long been without you, but know you have always watched over me.  I wouldn't be or have done anything without the sometimes colossal efforts of my Mom.

    Celebrating at the graduation (5.00 / 5) (#5)
by Towanda on Sun May 13, 2012 at 09:01:21 AM EST
from college of my baby today.  It's her day.  It has been all about her for thirty years now. :-)

I've had kids in college for more than fifteen years now.  Just two kids, but they took their time! and took off to start, stop, restart, etc. various careers and other interesting activities.

This was going to be quite a marker in my life -- until both started talking about graduate school.

Noooooooooes.  Not now.  Gimme one day to put this chapter behind me.

*And yes, this one graduating today ended up at a private college, and despite lots of awards and grants, the financial aid debt is staggering -- especially for a future teacher in my state that demonizes teachers and has slashed pay, with more slash-and-burn ahead.

But she loves teaching, will be honored as the top student in the program this year and winner of a state award for teaching, so there 'tis.

    She must have had a great mom (5.00 / 3) (#6)

    Thanks! But I've always described her (5.00 / 2) (#19)
by Towanda on Mon May 14, 2012 at 11:32:51 AM EST
as the woman I wanted to be . . . the one that I became only after long decades of learning how not to be.  So the most important thing that I learned was when to get out of the way and let her be all that she could be -- which is all that any of us wanted to be.

I wish that I was as organized as is she! about being thoughtful.  I so often think thoughts that ought to be shared with deserving others but then let busy times of year get ahead of me, and I fail on the follow-through.

Not her.  Amid all that she had to do at the end of her semester -- filing her huge required portfolio with her college and the state, her licensing paperwork with the state, and all while continuing to file her lesson plans with her district, and much more -- she deputized my spouse to deliver a series of surprises yesterday, from a Mother's Day corsage to a letter that I received as the ceremonies began.

I won't share the letter, as I do not need to do so with you, MT -- because you already know its contents.  In sum, because she is my child with a devastating health condition that constantly has screwed up schooling and more for her, she wrote about it not being enough to be a fighter herself, as she needed other fighters on her side.

I think that your spouse would agree, huh?

Sometimes we just take our marching orders from daughters such as this.  But sometimes we have to be the generals and get them marching again -- as she recounted in the letter about a low day in her life, owing to lack of confidence . . . and how she had turned her life around that day, because she listened to me.

For once! she listened to me, she admits, and doing so turned her life around.  Now, is there any better message on Mother's Day than "you told me so" -- sparing us from having to say "I told you so"?

everyone were really loved by their mothers. Some children sadly never experience that unconditional mother love for even a day of their lives.

    Intrusion... (5.00 / 3) (#11)
by lentinel on Sun May 13, 2012 at 02:04:08 PM EST
Excuse this intrusion on Mother's Day for a different topic...

but I was reading Maureen Dowd's column and she ended it with something that left me dumbfounded.

She was talking about the new expressions of support for gay marriage coming from the White House.

    She ended her column saying,

" As the "Will & Grace" co-creator Max Mutchnick put it on the CBS morning show, there are now little boys who can dream of both being a president and marrying a president."

Apparently, it didn't occur to either Max or Maureen that little boys could already dream of marrying a president if a woman were allowed to attain that position.

But, I will add, that I can't picture anyone, boy or girl, straight or gay, dreaming of marrying a president. What is this, a 50's sitcom?

    She's lost her marbles.

is a terrible waste of valuable media real estate.

Your comment reminds me of an old joke about the first Jewish woman president. I'll spare you the long build-up, but the punch line has the president-elect's mother watching the swearing-in ceremony and whispering to the person sitting next to her, "See that woman with her hand on the bible? Her brother's a doctor."

...they were always dreaming about it...
This new declaration has nothing to do with hopes and dreams, only the ability to achieve them.

It's like saying black people never dreamed of freedom until Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.

Sybrina Fulton, a woman who has shown tremendous poise in the face of tragedy has a message on this, her first mother's day without her son.  She's released a video hoping to make a change.

"On Sunday, I'm going to say a prayer for other mothers across America who share this unbearable pain. Just like me, 30,000 mothers lost their children this year to senseless gun violence. Nobody can bring our babies back, but it would bring us some comfort if we can spare other mothers the pain that we will feel on this Mother's Day, and every day for the rest of our lives."

She's advocating for a campaign of letter writing to governors to reconsider the wisdom of Stand Your Ground laws.  I, for one plan to join this campaign.  I encourage others to do so as well.

I spent the day with my mom and the new mom, who mostly just needed a break from her 5 month old "giant squirmy baby".  He's finally getting a personality.  And right now that personality involves bouncing off the walls until he crashes.

It's been almost 20 years since Mom passed on. And yet, there are still times I'll be driving down the road when something pops into my head and I say to myself, "Boy, wait'll I get home and tell Mom....... "

Those of you lucky enough to still have your Mom, show & tell her you love her every single day. Believe me, there'll come a day when you'll wish you could, but that's all you'll be able to do...wish.
