    It's Sarcoma Awareness Month (5.00 / 2) (#7)

Well, not officially. Nonprofit organizations and the cooperative of doctors who specialize in this rare cancer all agree on July, but we have yet to get approval from Congress.

I have worked 6 years on this. My U.S. rep, Kathy Castor, has introduced House Resolution 722 in support of the designation. But we desperately need some co-sponsors.

I would be very grateful if any of y'all would contact your reps and urge them to support 722. Here's more information.

If we get this designation, I guarantee that the media will use this as an angle or hook to do some stories on sarcoma, and it will get listed in health calendars and briefs.

Here's one reason we need more awareness: Many oncologists have never seen a sarcoma and they assume all patients die. I just got back from dinner with a woman whose doctor asked her why she wanted to have chemo. The subtext was: "You're going to die in a couple of years anyway." Luckily, she got a second opinion from the nearest sarcoma expert (about 5 hours away).

And the grey damp filthiness of ages..." Posted it once before, but have to again.  Great quality, even greater show. (LINK) At the 15:40 mark Polly offers a great version of The Last Living Rose, which I love in part for its opening lyric: "Goddamn Europeans, take me back to beautiful England, and the grey damp filthiness of ages..."

Bonus clip (LINK) is her singing this song on an AM show in Britain, after sitting next to Brit PM Cameron and making him and the host uncomfortable with talk of arts cuts and predatory finance.

Was going to go last year with a buddy of mine who went.  He said it was better than he'd imagined, well worth the effort and price.  Negotiating with his wife so he could go? Now that was priceless.
