Wednesday Morning Open Thread

I'll be flying solo on Daily Kos Radio from 11 to noon Eastern today. The topic of discussion will be the events in Egypt and Libya, and the terrible film championed by Terry Jones, the infamous Koran burner, that ignited them. I'll also discuss the responses to events by the Obama Administration and the Romney political campaign.

No Mitt Romney could not wait to attack (5.00 / 1) (#2)

We had not even counted our dead and he was attacking.  They had just finished properly notifying family and he was attacking our current leaders again.  He's got nothing to give to voters so for the next 55 days he will stand panting on the hill overlooking the landscape waiting for anything to die that he can feed on and provide red meat for his rabid following.

You are doing a great job discussing it IMO.  We will always have individuals though pushing the limits of what is possible.  That too is very Americana, and we usually succeed and fail in a very mixed bag way doing it.

has the money photo in Jed's dairy at DKos.  Jed has a photo of Romney smirking at the podium, she has a photo up of him walking away.  That photo looks horrible

    A Galluping Bounce (none / 0) (#5)
by CoralGables on Wed Sep 12, 2012 at 12:15:57 PM EST
The Gallup 7 day tracking poll continued its upward climb today giving Obama a +7 margin (50-43), and his biggest lead over Romney since last April.

    California teacher salaries (none / 0) (#6)
by lilburro on Wed Sep 12, 2012 at 01:34:21 PM EST
the highest teacher salary offered in the state of California that I could find maxed out at about 120k a year.  Using the cost of living calculator provided by CNN, that is more or less equivalent to the 90th percentile salary offered in York County, Pennsylvania.

Make of that what you will.

And as far as Chicago goes (5.00 / 1) (#7)

    Good Read... (none / 0) (#8)

You have those who simply blame unions. If that were the problem, then children schooled in non-union areas would be performing better than kids in unionized districts. But they're not. Others will rail against the salaries teachers make (and the "average" salary is not remotely what starting teachers make). But salary itself is not the issue in the Chicago teachers' strike.

Sit down and make a list of the half-dozen people who have inspired you in your life, encouraged you when it seemed no one else was. Chances are, at least one of those names belongs to a teacher. Yes, they need to be held to reasonable standards of accountability. But they also deserve our respect.

I do disagree with part of the article.  We are all compensated on things that we have absolutely no control over.  For the most part, we are all interconnected at work and no one has the luxury of not working with people who aren't as enthusiastic or capable.  There are also forces that may have nothing to do with any of that, like a huge recession.  Part of teachers compensation has to be be tied to test scores.  These are educators, they can figure out how to remove kids that don't show up or other things in the calculation to make it more indicative of their performance.  But it should not be the basis of their compensation, just another part of it.

To me, teachers should be paid better than private industry people, they are teaching the future of America.  And these attacks, only make the kids in college think twice about getting into a profession in which the republicans have decided is overpaid and under worked, when in most cases the opposite is true.

The cream isn't floating to the top, it's getting out of the game and eventually we will be left with what we have paid for.
