Colorado Poll on Pres. Race, Gun Control and Marijuana

Last week the Denver Post commissioned Survey USA to do a poll on the presidential race, gun control, Amendment 64 (to legalize small amounts of marijuana for personal use) and other topics.

The paper, perhaps to milk traffic, released the results in bits and drabs over a few days, making it difficult to read the actual survey results or report on it in one article. Each day they'd have a reporter attach a little graphic of results for the topic they were disclosing that day. It's very frustrating way to analyze a poll that way. Nonetheless, enough of the results are now out to the report major findings.

51% of Coloradans support Amendment 64 to legalize marijuana. Despite the Aurora shootings, 56% of Coloradans don't want stricter gun control laws; and Obama and Romney are statistically tied. [More..]

Fifty-six percent said it was more important to protect the right to own guns versus 39 percent who said controlling gun ownership and 5 percent who answered they weren't sure. Men tended to be more likely to defend gun ownership, with 63 percent supporting the right to own guns and 32 percent saying gun control was more important.

The poll was conducted by phone Sept 9 to 12. 615 likely voters were included. 34% were Republicans, 34% were Democrats, 30% said they were undecided. 26% were contacted by cell phone and "who were shown a questionnaire on their smartphone, tablet or other electronic device."

Where necessary, responses were weighted according to age, gender, ethnic origin, geographical area and number of adults and number of voice telephone lines in the household, so that the sample would reflect the actual demographic proportions in the population, using most recent U.S. Census estimates. In theory, with the stated sample size, one can say with 95 percent certainty that the results would not vary by more than the stated margin of sampling error, in one direction or the other, had the entire universe of respondents been interviewed with complete accuracy.

Obama and Romney are statistically tied, it would be most interesting if Obama came out in support of Amendment 64 if he could be convinced that it would tip the balance in his favor.

    I know.

    Ain't gonna happen.

He'd figure he'd lose in the other 49.

In the 1950s, Lenny Bruce predicted that mj would be legalized because government officials would do it to protect themselves from prosecution. That didn't happen. But they did decide to allow the legalization of torture if authorized by a president. Go figure.
