Sunday News and Open Thread

More than 2,000 U.S. troops have now died in Afghanistan.

Justin Beiber threw up twice onstage during his debut "Believe" concert last night, but charged back each time and finished the show.

When he finally returned, Bieber had the poise and innate show-business smarts to come clean with the audience. "It's hard for me, you know, not feeling great and throwing up in front of a bunch of people," he said to laughs. "Will you love me even though I'm throwing up on stage?" Shrill shrieks. "OK, I wanted to give you my best show ever, so do you mind if I finish it?"

Here are some Supreme Court possibilities if Mitt Romney wins the election. Among them: Judge Janice Rogers Brown. Remember her?

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

    I'd be throwing up, endlessly.

The kid has a good voice, and I guess I'm not his target audience, but yeah, projectile upchucking would be my only contribution to his show.

Certainly not good enough to be soloist for any half way decent glee club, let alone be accepted as a voice major at most music departments.

Very interesting film, beautiful to look at and truly riveting performances. Still pondering it, will probably see it again. I really wish I could get to a 70mm screening- you folks in real cities might be able to find those.

As good as 'There Will Be Blood'? Not to me, but very few films are  IMO.

We will go to it.  I wanted to see it, my husband said that he didn't want to because Joaquin Phoenix lost him.  I thought that was silly.  Joaquin Phoenix has great acting abilities, a strange hiatus hoping to be a rapper doesn't alter his acting abilities.  How can an actor lose you though over wanting to do something different.  I show up to be entertained by their acting abilities, not their ability to make perfect occupational judgement calls.

But it was a puzzling film.  Technically great....a series of character vignettes.....no real plot or story..... not a take down of Scientology at all.

I prefer linear movies to be entertained....

The good news:  Spielberg's Lincoln looks close to being released.

No Lincoln preview yet, but some others look good. A Robert Zemeckis film with Denzel Washington and Don Cheadle about a hero airline pilot that then gets sued looks good, plus a time travel film looked beautiful and interesting. And Les Mis....I was tearing up even at the trailer....

I got tear-y at the previews, too.  And I hated the book (my psyche couldn't take it when I was in junior high and I've never recovered), didn't see the play and had/have no intention of seeing the movie.

But it looks to be brilliantly done.

It seems like key scenes may have been left on the cutting room floor. I don't want to advocate for a 3 hour movie, but in this case I would have been happy to see it.

    repeated: raccoon warning (none / 0) (#4)
by the capstan on Sun Sep 30, 2012 at 04:11:52 PM EST
Both my current southern state AND California have warned against feeding raccoons:  :"Raccoons act as a reservoir for rabies in the United States. In fact, the majority of rabies cases in the U.S. are in wildlife, with raccoon cases predominating."
Had one stumbling around in my yard a couple of years ago; the tree guys who were working went and sat in their trucks until I got someone official to come catch the coon.  (He said this one had distemper, not rabies most likely.)

Cute critters, but not to be encouraged--

in a nature book.  Downright creepy looking when you suddenly spot one ten feet away on the patio well before sunrise, approaching you like he wants to go through all your pockets for food.  Darn near gave me a heart attack.

Prefer feeding cute small squirrels so long as they keep their proper social distance and don't get too demanding -- regular nuts vs organically grown -- on the food I offer them so generously.

Northern Virginia apparently has to beware of rabid beaver attacks if they are in or near lakes.  There were two rabid beaver attacks, in different locations, in Fairfax County, VA in early September.  First.  Second.
Although, it's rare for beavers to be infected.  Much more common in North America for raccoons, bats, and skunks to be infected.

is the kind of question I would like to be asked of the two candidates for president during a debate:

There are studies that have been recently been released that show the genetically modified corn has caused cancer in laboratory animals. Others exonerate the product. However, at present, producers of this product are not obligated to label it as having been genetically modified. Consumers have no way of knowing if the corn they are considering purchasing has been genetically modified.

Would you support the mandatory labeling of this product?

Let the hemming, hawing and parsing begin.

of Supreme Court contenders under a president Romney is frightening.  The Republicans go for those young in age so as to assure a tenure of damage to the democracy.  Accordingly, my guess is that Janice Rogers Brown would not meet that criterion.

Brent Kavanaugh  and Paul Clement would satisfy Republican age requirements but may fall out if balance of religion on the Court comes into play, both being Catholic.  Kavanaugh's confirmation to the appeals court took a long time (3 years), but otherwise he would meet all right wing expectations being a protege of Ken Starr and all.

Clement is a current darling of the right having taken and stuck with the DOMA case for Boehner and the House Republicans--enough credibility to overcome what they feel is his unfortunate  outcome for his supreme court challenge to the ACA .  But then, it was not his fault, it could be argued,  it was that of turncoat Chief Justice Roberts.

Mike Lee would probably look good to Romney, as a young US Senator from Utah and a Mormon.  No more need be said in his favor.

I haven't seen such a pitiful display from the Jets since the Kotite era...and I'm not looking forward to the inevitable switch to Tebow, as painful as Sanchez is to watch.  When does basketball start? ;)

A Case That May Hit the Headlines (none / 0) (#13)

A determined lawyer is pursuing a civil suit against a policeman who shot and killed a teenager.  About 2 years ago in Westchester, New York, Danroy Henry was leaving a parking lot in his car and a policman, Aaron Hess, ended up on the hood and emptied his glock into Henry.  The local DA convened a Grand Jury which absolved Hess after interviewing over 80 witnesses and says the case is closed.  But that is not stopping Michael Sussman, Esq. who represents Henry's parents.  He is currently taking depositions from the police and other parties and already claims to have found new "explosive and important" evidence in the testimony of another policeman.  You can find much more, including transcripts of ongoing depositions, on Sussman's website.  There is a sort of resemblance with the very well covered Martin/Zimmerman case.  Hess is white and Henry was black and Sussman has been pushing the civil rights angle.

I read that Call the Midwife was more popular in England than Downtown Abbey. It certainly shows a very different side of life in England.

And I liked Vanessa Redgrave's voice-over at the beginning and end of the episode.

Is so extreme in her contempt for civil society that she calls zoning laws unconstitutional.

This is Chuck Schumer speaking against her confirmation for the DC Court of Appeals in 2005.

    Schumer's line is:

IS SHE A STRICT CONSTRUCTIONIST IF SHE SAYS ZONING LAWS, WHICH HAVE BEEN WITH US FOR HUNDREDS -- OVER A HUNDRED YEARS ARE UNCONSTITUTIONAL?

    She's the ultimate whackadoo Conservative.
