... thin-skinned petty plutocrat is now starting to precede him, and that's not a good thing.

That lousy stunt Christie's appointees to the NY/NJ Port Authority pulled in Ft. Lee was a bridge too far with a lot of people, underscoring his longstanding reputation as a political bully, and it's starting to really haunt him at a most inopportune time.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

having the effect many Democrats would like to see.

And for those who keep screaming about how the Tea Party will never let him win, and about how much influence they supposedly have in the party, well - the numbers don't really reflect that, and it remains only a good Democratic talking point for now.

When stacked up against potential GOP competitors in a Fox News poll, there is more good news for Christie. He leads eight other Republicans with a 16 percent plurality among GOP respondents. In other words, Christie's not only shaping up as the most electable Republican right now; he's also scoring points among the party faithful.

    ObamaCare (none / 0) (#5)
by squeaky on Tue Dec 24, 2013 at 10:57:40 AM EST
Thanks for the news flash that ObamaCare has been extended until midnight tonight..   Just enrolled... took 5 minutes.. got to keep my doctor and cut my premiums in half..

I was dropped (dec 31, 2013) by united healthcare in november, but they sent me a offer to re-join with a selection of plans. Their comparisons to my old plan were very confusing to say the least.

They said that I had until Dec 31 to decide...

Dumped them and have saved big time.

yay ObamaCare.   and double yay for Jeralyn for posting that the deadline was midnight tonight..

    Skepticism is healthy, pun intended. (5.00 / 1) (#10)
by Dadler on Tue Dec 24, 2013 at 12:06:03 PM EST
And I really don't get why those on "our" side are calling it Obamacare, or why any "leader" in a democracy would want such a cult of personality-like title attached to congressional legislation BEFORE he knows whether it is working at providing actual care. This is a no-brainer here: you call it Obamacare AFTER you know whether it works or not, in a few years. If it's working at that point, THEN you throw Obama's name all over it. But doing it now, IMO, is very odd and not strategically rational.

Personally, and I'm sure it's no surprise to you, I'd rather that Americans were granted genuine freedom, which would mean they had a right to profit-free healthCARE. But we have "freedom" instead. Qualified, with an asterisk. We have "freedom" in the form of a convoluted system that is part and parcel of the government's inability, due largely to corruption, to simply do the best and most efficient thing for its citizens.

I'm glad you could sign up easily and pay half for now, but I just think we should be, here's that word again, skeptical. To give a brute example, were most of us here on TL cheerleading for the Iraq war when those Hussein statues were coming down that first week? Nope, it was the right who rah-rah'd blindly.

Additionally, it seems we should be wary for no other reason than right now there does not seem to exist any public agency that could possibly ensure hundreds of millions of Americans are not being gouged, are not the victims of chicanery on the insurance industry's part, that, simply, the law is being followed by these medical conglomerates, and where it is not that timely and meaningful corrective measures are taken -- and that penalties have actual teeth, unlike, say, those doled out to finance crooks. I mean, it does seem like that would require a pretty big agency of dedicated civil servants. So...this is what concerns me, that, just like supposed financial regulations, if no adequate mechanism exists to enforce the law to any effective degree, then what happens?

We know what happens, I just don't think we want to consider it. So we don't.

If people want to get for-profit health"care", fine, let them, but those who don't want this should also have the freedom not to have profit the first thing made off of their bodies and minds. Just the way I see it. But I guess it's the price we pay for living in a nation that values money far more than it values human beings. That is the only way something like the ACA ever comes into being, or talk about, say, Social Security cuts comes from supposed democrats, or democrats use that bullsh*t right-wing term "entitlements."

Again tho, glad you're saving money for now, hope it lasts, and hope the care you receive doesn't get metaphorically halved as well. And of course I could be wrong entirely, wouldn't be the first time. Peace and happy holidaze, my fellow free American.

    Skeptical? (none / 0) (#13)
by squeaky on Tue Dec 24, 2013 at 12:16:12 PM EST
All I know is that I have been spending top dollar for crap insurance for a very long time. The very rare times that I have made a claim I have been denied coverage...  all BS reasons, that were not worth my time to prevail over with a protracted fight.

Now I have dental, plus meds, plus my same doctor (who I never go to anyway)..  all at half the price I was paying.

On the state site I was able to compare my current insurer's new plan (Jan 1) with others, using an array of filters to narrow the search. My current company UnitedHealthCare, fell short, and was significantly more expensive...

I think that that the Health Insurance companies suck. But, I guarantee you, I am way better off now than I was before ObamaCare...  and as for using the name.. It is what Jeralyn used, so I used it as a hat tip to her deadline reminder.

I do not care about the name, but I am happy to leave UnitedHealthCare in the dust.

I have friends who never had health insurance or really bad insurance (mine was premium on the face, crappy on the payouts), and now they are insured for the first time...

Sure it could be better, but it is already waaaaaaay better than what it was for me.

So good on Obama for taking the heat on this and pushing through major improvement for most americans.
