Big 10, is always thrilled when Ohio State loses. Doesn't matter who beats them, a Buckeye loss is a Buckeye loss.

So, a hearty "Well done" goes out to the Spartans of Michigan State. Thank you for brightening my weekend by defeating Ohio State.

But my Lakers will be staggering along at around .500 probably. And the local Warriors have started out terribly compared to expectations.

Plus I just abandoned USF basketball when their senior point guard and team leader (who has started at point EVERY game of his career!) quit the team after getting beat up in a fight during practice (LINK). Gotta love that coaching staff, huh, letting your senior leader get into a scuffle that gets so out of hand he quits the team for good? Head coach and former NBA chucker Rex Walters is a just a garden variety a-hole most of the time. Two seasons ago, I watched him grab that same kid in the middle of the court during a timeout, shake him, scream at him, mock his defensive stance as not good enough, just embarrassed this kid in front of the whole place. I literally went from cheering the Dons as they headed for the bench to yelling, "You're a dick, Rex! A total effing idiot!" I wouldn't have re-upped last season if I didn't love the game so much. But after that kid left with a literal black eye, forget it. I'll be taking BART to Berkeley for CAL games from now on. I'm a UC boy anyway, it fits.

"As the Pac-12 Turns," Episode MMCDIX: (none / 0) (#7)
by Donald from Hawaii on Sat Dec 07, 2013 at 04:53:34 PM EST
Our story thus far: The University of Washington gave USC AD Pat Haden permission to talk to now-former Husky coach Steve Sarkisian (34-29), which led to interim Trojans coach Ed Orgeron being rudely shoved aside by Haden to make room for Sarkisian. Free of their overrated and underachieving coach, the Huskies quickly made serious overtures to UCLA's Jim Mora, who then accepted a very sweet contract extension by the panicked UCLA administration, whereupon today, UW snags Boise State's Chris Petersen (92-12), who turned down UCLA two years ago and USC two weeks ago.

Anyone care to speculate who got the better of that round of musical chairs? (Hint: It wasn't USC.)

    Bow Down to Washington, gang.

From another point of view (none / 0) (#8)
by CoralGables on Sat Dec 07, 2013 at 05:19:52 PM EST
Orgeron was never under consideration by USC or any of the other Pac-12 schools. There is a reason for that whether you agree with it or not. A major college football program needs a Head Coach that can conduct a press conference and be understood.

As for Steve Sarkisian, I believe you underrate him and overrate Chris Petersen. Sarkisian took over a Huskies team that had lost 14 in a row and 21 of their previous 23 and  turned the Huskies around with 4 of 5 winning seasons including the last four.

It's a step up for Petersen getting out of a minor conference. Whether it's a step up for the Huskies by hiring Petersen, time will tell.

Uh, with all due respect, no. (none / 0) (#16)

You've clearly not watched Boise State under Chris Petersen, whereas we've seen them every year out here, Hawaii being in the same conference.

Again, Coach Petersen's Broncos were 92-12. Included in that record are significant and milestone victories over Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, Georgia, Oregon (twice!), Oregon State, UCLA, Arizona State, Arizona, BYU, Utah, and TCU. And need I also point out to you that all but one of those games (Oregon in 2009) were away from Boise?

Further, when you talk about the WAC / Mountain West being minor conferences, it should be noted that eight of his twelve losses were in conference. During the four-year period when Kellen Moore was QB, the Broncos were 50-3 and did not lose a non-conference game.

On the other hand, while former UW coach Ty Willingham may have been a mediocre coach on the sidelines, he clearly had an eye for talent and could recruit. Steve Sarkisian was hardly left with an empty cupboard when he arrived in Seattle in 1009.

He inherited a bunch of future NFL players, including Chris Polk, Mason Foster, Donald Butler, Alameda Ta'amu, Daniel Te'o Nesheim, Senio Kelemete, Devin Aguilar, Everrette Thompson, Cort Dennison, Victor Aiyewa. QB Jake Locker was the eighth pick in the 2011 NFL draft. And even with that talent, the Huakiea went 5-7.

In five years at Washington, Sarkisian averaged 6.8 wins per season, and never won more than five Pac-12 games in any one year. He was 0-5 against Oregon, 1-4 against Stanford, 0-3 against Arizona State and 1-2 against UCLA.

In this, his best (8-4) and fifth year, Sarkisian lost to Stanford, Oregon, Arizona State and UCLA. In 2010, his Huskies lost 44-14 to Arizona, 53-16 to Oregon, 56-21 to Nebraska, and 41-0 to Stanford. In 2011, they lost 65-21 to Stanford, and 67-56 to Baylor. In 2012, they lost 41-3 to LSU and 52-17 to Arizona.

A year ago, the Huskies were 7-4 with the Apple Cup and a bowl game between them and a nine-win season, only to blow an 18-point, fourth-quarter lead to lose to arch-rival Washington State, committing eight penalties in the last 16 minutes. Then they got beat by Coach Petersen's Boise State in the Las Vegas Bowl to finish 7-6 -- for the third straight time.

Look, my alma mater has enough going for it in football -- tradition, pedigree, great city, great school, and a very significant recruiting base -- that you really have to be a total screw-up to not win at Washington, at least in a middling manner.

And that's exactly what Steve Sarkisian did in five years in Seattle. He won middlingly. Call him "Coach Moderste." This year, the Pac-12 record is 5-4, just as it was last year, as it was the year before that, and the year before that. That's the reality. The Huskies blew away the two conference doormats, California and Colorado, and went 3-4 against the average, good and very good teams in the league.

So, Coach Sark's grade at the helm of the Huskies is a resounding B for the first two years, and a C for the last three. For every great win during the Sarkisian regime, there were always two or three pus-ugly losses. Is the program better than when Sarkisian first came to it? Absolutely. But did he author some sort of stunning turnaround at UW? Hardly.

    Aloha.

Don't know who will come out ahead with this amazing offensive output by both teams, but pretty sure FSU fans should pull for Ohio State to win tonight.

Neither FSU nor Ohio State want anything to do with Auburn or Missouri.

Not sure why anyone would think FSU would not want to face the SEC champ.  I have to say I would have rather seen 'bama win out so FSU would face them but I guess I will have to settle for FSU blowing Auburn out.

Regarding Auburn, As Chairman Mao Once Said (none / 0) (#21)
by john horse on Mon Dec 09, 2013 at 07:36:52 PM EST
Personally, I would have preferred FSU play Ohio State but only because 1. I think they would be easier for FSU to beat and 2. beating Urban Meyer would be so sweet.

But I'm with you.  FSU is the best team in the country, on both offense and defense.  The only weakness on this team is punting, but in case anyone noticed, FSU doesn't punt the ball very often.  Jameis Winston isn't just the best FSU QB I've ever seen, but one of the best college QB I've ever seen period.

As Chairman Mao once said, Auburn is a paper Tiger.

the SEC will likely have a representative in the BCS Championship for the 8th straight time and the 10th time overall. In the 9 BCS Championship appearances by the SEC they are a perfect 9-0.

One thing for sure, it must be in the water. With an Auburn/FSU matchup, this will be the 9th straight year the NCAA Champion comes from a state that borders the Gulf of Mexico.

Living down here with it happening repeatedly is giving everyone an inflated sense of importance.

Football down here is crazy though.  It really kicks in in HS.  Josh's PE teacher coached HS football here and had to quit when he became a father.  He said he got home at midnight and was up at 5:00 am.  He didn't see his kids and was no help at home.
