Tech Talk

My iPhone 5s died yesterday. It just wouldn't turn on. I ended up having to plug it into my computer and restore the factory settings, and then an old backup. It took hours, and it worked -- until this morning. Dead as a doornail again.

I took it to the Apple store, and without my even asking, they offered me a brand new phone, same model. They set it up in 5 minutes. (Now I have to sync it and get all my music and apps back on it, but at least I won't have to keep doing it tomorrow and the next day.) Thank you Apple!

Apple is coming out with a 13" iPad. I still have the original iPad, which doesn't work with a lot of more advanced video apps, so maybe it will be time for a new one. I really like the big screen -- but then, I'm one of the few people I know who still prefer a desktop to a laptop. Anyone else tempted to buy it? [More...]

In early September, the iPhone 6 is rumored to be coming, and an iWatch.

Question: Does anyone know how to get the bubbles out of a screen protector for the iPhone? I put one on the new phone a few minutes ago and there are four or five bubbles that aren't releasing with the cloth they supplied.

Let's keep this thread tech-related, but it doesn't have to be about Apple. All tech-related comments are welcome.

A teaser trailer was released yesterday for the upcoming Jean Dujardin movie. The film was shot in 35mm film, which is still favored by a lot of Luddite cinematographers, and will apparently be released to some theaters in that same dinosaur format.

(Based on the trailer, the film may nicely summon the spirit of Jean-Pierre Melville, who's crime films have been getting a bit of respect and attention over the past few years.)

    Love the trailer BTW (5.00 / 1) (#21)

    "dinosaur format?"

That seems a bit unnecessarily mean spirited.

Are artists who paint with oils also luddites? Are theater actors luddites? Are those who enjoy listening to music from LP's luddites?

Why do you choose to take such a personally negative view of these cinematographers and their medium?

Did they insult you in some way?

for shooting movies with 35 mm film there are not many video projectors in theaters throughout the world.  Some remote cities are finally getting their first film projector.  There are thousands of these projectors out there so film will be around for a very long time.

    Modern TVs have HDMI inputs. (5.00 / 1) (#10)
by Mr Natural on Thu Aug 28, 2014 at 06:25:03 AM EST
Many laptops and desktops have HDMI outputs, which makes everything easy.  HDMI cables are cheap.  (Translation: Don't let a salesperson talk you into overpriced HDMI cables.)

If your computer doesn't have HDMI, it may have DisplayPort or DVI.  Nothing to worry about as adaptors are available for both types.  If your computer has only VGA outputs, buy a new computer.  An adaptor/converter is available, but it isn't worth doing.

To make this worth doing, 1080P is what you're looking for in a TV.  That's 1920 pixels wide, 1080 pixels high.  720P TVs are cheaper, but they're only 1280 pixels wide by 720 high.

One thing to be aware of.  Televisions tend to overscan by default, a holdover from the old days of analog broadcasting.  The edges of your desktop appear to have been pushed off the sides, top, and bottom of the TV screen.  You can't find the taskbar or only half of it.  Not a big deal, just poke around your TV setup screens and find the setting that turns overscanning off.

He I adapters are expensive because they have both picture and sound.  You can sometimes get around this - I did with my old one, it was so old school it did not even have an HDMI Input - by sending just the picture to the set  and the sound to whatever sound system you have.

Inputs are standardized with new TVs (none / 0) (#38)
by toggle on Thu Aug 28, 2014 at 04:07:04 PM EST
All new TVs will have HDMI, which can easily be connected to modern computers which will either have it natively or can be adapted from the older DVI.

It's more important to pick a suitable television based on some other characteristics--resolution (1080p), response time (low), and a dedicated "pc" mode.

The PC mode thing is not standardized, I don't think, but I have two Samsungs that have it. Basically when you set the input type (or name, it's not obvious what it does) to "PC" it will adjust the overscan, color, image enhancement, sharpness, etc., to be optimized for a PC.

Most TV is low quality (even HDTV) and looks better with image enhancement. This is done by a computer inside the television, but it's for video; it makes PC inputs blurry and induces a slow response time (or lag) that is very perceptible when you expect instantaneous response (such as using a mouse or playing a game). Video players for PCs also have a lot of this built in and so if the TV is doing it again it introduces visual artifacts and causes a loss of video quality. PCs are much better at the image enhancement anyway.

Sorry if I'm rambling. I would just google TVs that are recommended for use with PCs.

BUT, the newer screens are much more resilient than the old ones. I used a screen protector (with bubbles I could not get out) for the first year I had my i5. Then a year ago I got tired of the bubbles and dirt that built up at the edges, and took off the protector. Looking at my screen now, there is nary a nick. This sort of blows my mind that they replaced your phone for free! I've always used Apple products and I always will, but I've been less than impressed with the way they seem to "force" people to purchase the latest devices. I have an early generation iPod that doesn't run the latest apps, so I no longer purchase apps.  A month ago my MacMini just stopped working-- wouldn't boot up-- so I took it in and they did not replace it, but I had to purchase a new hard drive. About 4 years ago I had another MacMini that also stopped working and I had purchase a whole new computer.

I've never had this many issues with Apple (products OR service), until recently. I don't know what the deal is but I'm getting frustrated!!!

    No, they don't have a newer model yet (none / 0) (#48)

The 5s is the latest model. I got it in October and it had a one year warranty, so it was still under warranty. As I said, they offered the new phone, I didn't think to ask for one. (I was expecting them to say they had to send it into Apple to see what was wrong with it. I had even brought my old iPhone 4 with me so I'd have a phone to use while they worked on it.) They told me they could get the phone working again, but there was no guaranty it wouldn't happen again, so they could give me a new one. The invoice they gave me shows the price as $269, balance owed, $0.)

I was surprised too, because I thought they would try to tell me to wait and get the iphone 6 which is coming out soon. I did ask him about the iPhone6 and he told me it isn't coming out in the immediate future.

Apple is planning to announce it's new iPhone 6 on Sept. 9th.  If they do come out with the new 12.9 inch iPad I think I'll go for it.  Just what I need...more Apple stuff.

put a USB port on the next iPad. Such a simple thing. Why doesn't the iPad have a USB port, anyway?

    Well I think the USB port (5.00 / 1) (#73)

not being on iPads is because they are on the same platform as cell phones that also do not have USB ports as far as I know.  iPads are not really little computers but are big iPhones even if you don't have the cell phone model.  I'm not 100% on these statements especially now that I'm on my 2nd beer...TGIF...

I think fewer and fewer people miss the USB port (none / 0) (#76)

with everything done through cloud services. There are various adapters available for those that need them. A friend gave me an extra $30 one that lets me hook up my camera, which is nice on vacation. that is the only time I have ever needed a USB port.

As to why, I think it is a size issue (none / 0) (#77)

Takes up room inside the device, which they are trying to keep ever slimmer. Possibly uses more power too.
