Mike Sorrentino's New "Situation": Tax Fraud Indictment

Jersey Shore's Mike "the Situation" Sorrentino and his brother have been indicted for tax fraud. They pleaded not guilty today. The Indictment is here.

The U.S. Attorney's office in New Jersey must not like reality TV. Teresa Giudice (Real Housewives of New Jersey) and her husband Joe are scheduled to be sentenced on October 2. The 41 original charges related to bankruptcy fraud and obstruction were pared down in a plea deal. Her guidelines are 21 to 27 months, but her lawyer is requesting probation. Her husband is likely to get more, but still under 5 years. And they owe creditors $13.5 million. [More....]

Actually, reality TV has little to with it. According to recent news articles, New Jersey has also gone after a former FBI agent and his wife, the owner of a weekly suburban NY newspaper and a former mayor (of a Jersey Shore town.)

Also somewhat interesting, New Jersey has "the highest property taxes in the nation, and among the highest income, inheritance, and estate taxes."

But it's not just New Jersey. Here's the IRS summary of federal fraud cases in 2014. There sure are a lot of them.

Manner and Means of the Conspiracy

    4. It was part of the conspiracy that defendants MARC SORRENTINO and MICHAEL SORRENTINO earned approximately $8.9 million in gross income on which they failed to pay all federal income taxes due and owing.

That they'd try to getaway with not paying taxes, or that someone would pay them $8.9 million?

the IRS SAiC revealed a sense of humor, "rather than living in reality and reporting their true income...".

There aren't many tax dodges left for those who can't afford a congressweasel to write them into legislation.
