Brazilian Hotel Evacuated as Hostage Paraded on Balcony

An employee at a luxury hotel in Brasilia has been taken hostage, handcuffed, strapped in a suicide vest and paraded on the balcony of a room on the 13th floor, with a gun to his head. The hotel has been evacuated and police are trying to get the hostage taker to release him. Photo here.

Unconfirmed reports are that the hostage taker checked into the hotel this morning, is a minor public official who is demanding the President of Brazil step down. (There was a televised debate last night in the upcoming presidential election.) Negotiators are on scene.[More....]

According to other guests at the hotel:

Guests told local media the man knocked on the doors of their rooms on the 13th floor and told them to leave because he was about to perform a "terrorist act". He then repeatedly stepped on to a balcony, threatening the handcuffed hotel employee.

This event is quite strange for Brazil, (5.00 / 4) (#1)

and particularly  Brazillia which is the countries capitol.  The city itself is shaped in the form of a delta wing and is a horrible place to live and work.  Unfortunately the leaders of Brazil must remain in the city that was carved out of the jungle to become the capitol.  There are several favelas, the poor cardboard and tin villages, that surround this remote capitol and are very dangerous.  The buildings of the capitol are all poured concrete and very ugly.  The people living and working there come from all parts of Brazil so there is very little bonding or happiness.  Sorry to give such a bleak report but that's the way it is.

"...police are trying to get the hostage taker to release him."

    "Negotiators are on scene."

They should just take a page from our new playbook: Say they don't negotiate with hostage takers, leave and go get coffee and a donut.

on the news this morning they said that the gun was fake.

That must mean that the explosive vest was fake as well.

Can't they do anything right down there in Brazil????

They do try to do things right (5.00 / 1) (#7)

down in Brazil even though they change the name of their money every few years.  They are champions of gasohol from sugar cane and almost everybody uses it in their autos.  Don't forget they invented the string bikini or thong which goes a long way towards the right thing.  And there is the girl from Impanema as well.

Don't forget they invented the string bikini

    I forgot about that --

Okay -- I will take it all back if they promise that the next time they strap explosives on someone and parade them around, it will be a someone wearing one of those Brazilian string bikinis.
