New UN Drug Report on Colombia: Coca Production is Up

The UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) released its latest report on coca production in Colombia today. Coca production is up 44%.

The increase is the biggest in almost a decade and takes coca production back to levels not seen since 2009. The findings come on the heels of a separate U.S. government survey showing production shot up 39 percent in 2014.

    As a gardener I'd like to say... (none / 0) (#1)

the workers in the above photo seem to be taking very good care of their crops.  I didn't realize the plant was so small.  That may be the high altitude.  A rougher looking landscape is hard to imagine, and it's totally terraced.  Can you imagine falling off your garden?  They can.

I'm guessing that the rise in production tracks a rise in demand which follows improving economies.

A tremendous amount of locals chew it to get through their day.  I tried some near Lake Titicaca...didn't seem to do a thing.  We did rent bicycles and pedal half way around the lake though.  We were also young and acclimated since Aspen is 8,000 feet, and the lifts go up to 12k.  The Indians didn't like blond people, and had their llamas spit on us.
