The 2015 Emmys are tonight. Andy Samberg is hosting.

So far, I'm not liking what I see on the red carpet. Here's Heidi Klum. This is one of the worst, worn by Kiernan Shipka of Mad Men. Too much tummy on Padma Lakshmi of Top Chef and I doubt chartreuse looks good on anyone. [More...]

Jamie Lee Curtis's look is too matronly. I don't like this dress either. Or this one. And what on earth was Alan Cumming thinking with these bizarre pant bottoms? He's not in Cabaret anymore. While I doubt they'd be flattering on anyone, he's much too short for them.

Here is the full list of nominees. Up for Outstanding Drama Series:

Interesting that The Good Wife isn't nominated, nor is Julianna Margulies.

There are hundreds of awards, including for "outstanding commercial." But I didn't see a single award for outstanding series in a foreign language. El Capo 3 and Senor de los Cielos 3 should be nominated, especially since both had subtitles.

Update: All in all, the most boring Emmys ever.

Didn't see any of the rest of the show, but reading the comments from those who did watch, it seems seeing her acceptance may have been about the best part of the whole evening.

Loved the reactions of Taraji P. Henson and Kerry Washington, as well.

Of the whole night. I did not expect that. But I'm very happy. I agree she is amazing at everything she does.

Happy to see Olive Kitteridge get so much love. IMO it totally deserved it.

Years ago while working for ABC Sports, American Sportsman, we were filming a kayak show, on the Yampa River, in western Colorado. We had the U S National champion and the world champion kayakers with us. I was set up, on a tripod, with a monster zoom lens, above an impossible to make waterfall. The world champion, an Austrian fellow, decided to go for it, and didn't make it. He and his kayak were sucked into the vortex churning below the falls. Seemingly minutes later he and his kayak popped out and were rescued. A 16 mm film camera with a 400' magazine load of film lasts 11 minutes at normal speed. I shot the entire mag. At that time sports shows entered a five minute unedited shot to the Emmy people. My shot won. The director/producer received the Emmy and said he would get one for me too. That never happened.

...Andy Samberg is a comical genius IMO. While I don't watch award shows, nor do I know how he did, he has been on and wrote for SNL for a decade, and while he is not a serious actor, if you like dumb comedies, he is damn funny. Hot Rod & That's My Boy being two of my favorites.

He has received an Emmy, several Golden Globes, and an American Comedy Award for his work.

I have no memory of posting SNL skits. But if I did I could imagine other reasons for doing it than I thought it was funny.

Not that it matters one way or another.

Just t be clear I thought his hosting was godawful. I actually had no memory of him otherwise.

And btw I completely disagree that you have t like something to get the satire. Again, not that it matters.

I guess my problem is that I would like to watch awards shows. I really would. I would like to be able to watch because I am interested in who wins and loses. And it really seems to me that the goal in the last few cycles is to make them as unwatchable as possible.
Like that's funn in itself. To someone.
I know you want to watch. Let's see just how badly you want to watch.

But that's just me.

For the record I thought last oscars and it host (who I am blanking at the moment) was equally godawful.

...I would prefer that people I think are funny, stay in their respective areas of expertise and stay the hell away from hosting award shows.

MacFarlane, was the target of a lot of attacks that had nothing to do with anything other than he was in spotlight for a week.

What is the aversion into getting serious people for award shows, they get comedy folks then tear them down for doing comedy.

But I think awards shows have shown us time and again that just because someone is funny doesn't make them a good host. Perhaps that was the case here.

I do agree he is funny, and I think the abundance of musical numbers is certainly related to him personally and his preference for such things, given that he was the digital short guy on SNL for years with the group Lonely Island. Personally I love Lonely Island, but not everyone is going to have the same taste and as with many SNL bits there are certainly going to be some flops.

I did like the opening number, and if that his specialty, I will check it out.
It is hard to hold a show for 3 hours. I think he mostly just grated on me as it went on...and on..and on...The horrible writing for the presenters did NOT help. that was worse than anything he did.

and you answered your own question...if a show only has one genuinely funny thing in 15 years, I tend to stop watching. Have not watched SNL for at least that long.

Dylan's original version did not sound as smooth as the Byrds...not sure I have a recording of it, but I have heard it someplace. I do prefer the Byrds version.

But then, I was all of six or seven in their heyday. I'll have to explore the body of their work in retrospect, like I did with Buffalo Springfield. Sometimes, that's the best way to really come to appreciate how good or even transcendent some musical artists actually were in their time.

Then again, trendy popschlock will likely never improve with age, no matter the number of decades which pass by. Further, while there's often a fine line between transcendent and pretentious, in some instances that line appears to have been drawn sharply with a black crayon.

...how much 80's trendy garbage do you here today and like ? For me it's a lot, Cyndi Lauper, Tears for Fears, Simple Minds, Psychedelic Furs, and on and on, all poppy garbage to me when it was on the radio in the 80's, now I dig a lot of that stuff, and certainly appreciate the artistic value that eluded me at the time.

"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" is probably one of the catchiest tunes of the '80s, and Cyndi Lauper -- a recent winner of several Tony Awards for her original score in the Broadway musical "Kinky Boots" -- proved to be a real talent with staying power.

But from my high school days, the Bay City Rollers & Tiger Beat's teen heartthrob Shaun Cassidy will never sound good in retrospect. And I swore that Debbie Boone's "You Light Up My Life" was briefly used by emergency room physicians to induce vomiting in overdose patients, until the Geneva Conventions prohibited its repeated play as the equivalent of sheer torture.

And to get back to Jeralyn's TV theme, let me conclude by saying that the '70s sitcom "Welcome Back, Kotter" had to be the stupidest comedy to ever hit the air back then, even if it did introduce us to an eventual two-time Oscar nominee for best actor named John Travolta -- though you'd have never predicted that on the basis of his silly supporting role in that show.

...more like Time After Time, which I would currently call a classic, while I hated it when it came out. I don't know that I will ever like 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun', ever, but probably because I am a boy.

Speaking of, I would say the soundtracks of 'Saturday Night Fever' or 'Grease would fall into it sucked at the time, but now I dig it, category.

Obviously, it's personal taste, but I do find pop grows on me with time.

I feel the same way about the Saturday Night Fever songs. They were just on the radio too much for me to appreciate them at the time - got so sick of them. Now I really like some of them, especially 'How Deep is Your Love'.

... was first released in theatres, and I can't say that I was all that impressed when I saw it at the time.
But I saw it again on TCM last February for the first time in well over three decades, during that network's "31 Days of Oscar" sweeps, and my opinion about it has evolved accordingly. "SNF" is entirely reflective of the times in which we lived in 1977. Great period pieces in cinema are those which manage to capture the moment without ever feeling false or contrived, and John Travolta's evocative performance as Tony Manero was truly worthy of the Oscar nomination he received.
That said, I'm still not a Bee Gees fan, and likely will never be. I've never cared for "SNF" soundtrack album.

I won't spoil any winners since I am on the east coast...

Fashion wise I think I liked a pink and black and white dress I saw the best, but for the life of me I can't remember who was wearing it. That is probably a bad sign.

Be sure to catch Andy Samberg's opening number. Pretty funny.
