Trump's Business Announcement: Another Reality Show Trick

Update: These tweets by the Office of Government Ethics today are really funny. No one knows who posted them, but they are legit. When did Trump say he would totally divest himself of his businesses? He called it a "separation." The NY Times has more.

Donald Trump dropped a cliffhanger on Twitter this morning, reminding me of a reality show preview. He announced he would separate from his companies. How? He'll tell us in two weeks at a press conference.

Does anyone believe him? I think the only way for him to eliminate conflicts of interest is to sell his businesses to people outside his family, and put the proceeds in a blind trust. He'll never do that. [More..]

Since his children will be joining him for his press conference, it's highly unlikely they are leaving Trump's businesses. More likely, they are going to buy it and Trump will get another tax break.

If that happens, the only way for Trump to avoid conflicts is to keep his kids out of his Administration, even as advisers. Since that's unlikely, Trump will be as conflict-filled as always after his announcement.

Smoke and mirrors. This seems like a Bachelor-style bait and switch. The Bachelor frequently shows previews for the next week with voiceovers of the lead or a contestant saying something to make you believe X will happen, and when the show airs, the scene in the preview is nowhere to be found, or it was taken out of context or a joke, or someone else said it than the person shown in the preview.

    The one lesson (none / 0) (#1)

The one lesson we can draw from this is that if we want the press to be looking closely for conflicts of interest then we should want white, male, Republicans in office.
