Halftime Superbowl Show

I caught the last two songs of the Superbowl halftime show. The last song was my favorite, with Coldplay flashing photos of Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston and others, and later being joined by Beyonce, Bruno Mars and hundreds of others, I presume were non-famous typical folks.

Haven't Beyonce and Bruno Mars already performed at the Superbowl? Why the encore? Did ColdPlay show the Who, Tom Petty, Madonna or Katie Perry? I may have missed it, the images went by fast and I was typing. Did Bon Jovi ever perform at halftime?

This is not an open thread, please keep your comments related to Superbowl -- either the game (which I'm not watching) or Superbowl Media (music, commercials, past and present, commentary, production value, etc.)

How was Lady Gaga's national anthem?

I think Denver is ahead 13 to 7, but I can't tell what the numbers flashing on the screen mean -- hopefully it's not some other statistic. There's not that much street noise coming through my windows. I do want Denver to win, just not enough to watch the game. Time for dinner -- an authentic Italian meatball sandwich on some great, crusty bread with plenty of sauce.

get to watch (almost) all the ESPN talking heads explain that the worst team won.

    Some thoughts.....

For those who found it boring...I understand. Watching a WR make a graceful leaping catch is ballet like. However, this is football and some mean CB will be trying to knock it away.

For those who found it sloppy...I understand.
Watching a QB stand in the pocket scanning the field for an open receiver as his offensive line keeps the defense at bay is dramatic. However, this is football  were in the last 12 Super Bowls the best defense won 10 because time after time the QB won up on his back.

For those who were disappointed that Cam lost...don't be. He is smart, very talented and dedicated. He'll be back.

And I say that as a huge Cam fan.

Boy did I have this SB pegged wrong...Congrats Denver, I knew your defense was great but I still underestimated them.

Special shout out to old man Wade Phillips...two great schemes to beat Brady and Newton back to back.  Though it sure does help any defensive coach to have a Von Miller, that guy is unbelievable.

2 FG drives of solid length
1 FG set up by special teams. Denver Offense went three and out
    1 Defense TD
1 offense TD that was set up by the defense.

We had great D players at the time and it's not like Manning was the missing link.

    This city is cursed.

Denver reminds me of the Giants the last time they won the SB.  They never look like they are playing well, but hot damn if they didn't walk away with win after win.

My dish went out right after half time and I missed the 3rd quarter.  Oddly enough, I didn't even care that much as the game was a snooze fest with Carolina seriously forgetting to show up.

Newton at times almost seems to have the curse of the too-strong arm, a little like way Elway and Favre did early in their careers..Some those laser throws of his fell incomplete because they were just thrown too damn hard. I did not feel like I was watching the two best teams in football - it was sloppy, full of mistakes, turnovers, penalties.

    This was a game very much dominated ... (none / 0) (#35)
by Donald from Hawaii on Mon Feb 08, 2016 at 12:30:50 PM EST
... by defense on both sides. The Carolina defense played their hearts out, and really kept the Panthers in it when their high-scoring offense was being dominated and shut down. Denver QB Peyton Manning was 13-23 for only 163 yards, and the Broncos' offense could muster only three decent drives the entire game, one of which ended in an INT. And 8 of Denver's 14 possessions went 3-and-out.

But the story of the day here is the Denver defense, which simply overpowered and brutalized Carolina. DC Wade Phillips proved to be the man of the hour on the Broncos' sideline. Whereas he had held his gang back on blitzing New England QB Tom Brady in the AFC title game last week to focus on covering and containing the Patriots receiving corps, yesterday he turned the dogs loose on Panthers QB Cam Newton, who was recently named the NFL MVP for the 2015-16 season.

The result was a nightmarish performance by Newton, who was under constant physical duress and pressure throughout the entire game. Accordingly, he went 18-41 in passing with 0 TDs and 2 INTs. He was sacked seven times and hit hard another 23 times. And most importantly, he was stripped of the ball twice by Denver LB Von Miller inside Carolina's own 5-yard line, which led to both of the Broncos' TDs. Miller's last strip-sack effectively kneecapped the Panthers with less than five minutes to go in the game.

So, yes, from an offensive standpoint, Super Bowl 50 was not a pretty game at all. But from a defensive perspective, yesterday's contest was really as good as it gets.

    Aloha.

A cousin of mine has long contended--in one of those football philosophy ongoing debates--that a great Defense will be the winner in a contest with a powerful Offense. Being that I'm always drawn to the veritable beauty of the good offensive action, I always hemmed & hawed about that argument ... even with my Denver memories here of seeing the Orange Crush.

I guess the Denver Defense with its Super Crush made me a believer.  Crush doesn't make for beauty, but it does make for champions.  And, actually, power and/or beauty are in the eye of the beholder.  For a number of reasons ... I've come to understand now why a number of my uncles and male cousins over the years were so taken by the power of a superb Defense.  (Oh, those same relatives were athletes in their younger days .... these types of debates in my family have been there ever since I could talk.)

    I think over the last couple of decades, ... (5.00 / 1) (#55)
by Donald from Hawaii on Mon Feb 08, 2016 at 10:22:51 PM EST
... the general public has somehow come to equate a lack of scoring in sporting contests with "boring." Yet some of the best games ever played during the season and playoffs are relatively low-scoring affairs when defense tends to carry the day. Yesterday was one of those games.

I've heard people complain all day today about how "sloppy" and "poorly played" this year's Super Bowl was, as though the rough outings that QBs Cam Newton and Payton Manning each endured were solely of their own making.

I very much disagree with that assessment. Rather, those two QBs and their respective offenses struggled because both Denver's and Carolina's defenses really came to play, and they both pretty much shut the other team down.

Usually, the outcome in such contests really comes down to which team can force the other to blink and err at a critical juncture. Denver's Von Miller led the charge and won that particular battle when it counted, when he strip-sacked Newton twice deep inside Carolina's own red zone, once at the 6:30 mark in the 1st quarter and again with only 4:15 to go in the 4th, and the Broncos recovered the fumble both times.

Those two plays led immediately to the 14 points that ultimately provided the Broncos their margin of victory, which is why Miller's only the ninth defensive player to ever be named Super Bowl MVP in the game's 50 years.

    Aloha.

There were/are Naval Air Stations located well away from the sea. Norman, OK; Olathe, KS; China Lake, CA; Meriden, MS; Fallon, NV and Millington, TN (Memphis) come to mind. NAS Memphis has been closed but the base is open to house BUPERS and other support activities. I didn't know Lowry was ever a Naval Air Station. I'm not sure of the date but I think its runway was closed mid 60's. It and Stapleton are now a gentrified neighborhood and has a nice air space museum worth visiting.

was honoring the black panthers in an homage to BLM.  I must admit I missed that, but in retrospect, yea it's pretty clear.

    I didn't get that either (none / 0) (#33)

Julianna Margulies knew at the SAG awards, she made a joke that she might be needing a job soon.

It's time, there's no place else for the show to go. The law firm stuff has gotten old and the politics even older. I think she and the private investigator will get into something during the final episodes but I don't know what.

I can't keep up with all law firm changes.  She's working with Dianne and Cary, then she isn't, then she's with one of them, then both, then neither, then...

At least this season has been more interesting than the previous.

that your team is owned and run by tight as@ed right wingers.  During the parade, the players/coaches/exes did not throw anything to the crowd - not even one piece of candy.

Would it have killed their profit margin to give those riding the fire trucks little nerf footballs/hats/key chains/t-shirts or other cheap knickknacks to the throw to the throngs lining the street?

    Apparently so.
