Monday Night at the DNC

Update: Michelle Obama looks terrific, that blue is a great color for her and her dress really showcases her super-toned arms.

"I trust Hillary to lead this country because I've seen her devotion to children, not just her own, who she has raised to perfection...Hillary has spent decades doing the relentless work to make a difference in their lives."

"When she didn't win the nomination 8 years ago, she didn't get angry or disillusioned. Hillary didn't pack up and go home."

"Hillary doesn't buckle under pressure." She never takes the easy way out. She doesn't give up.

Really great speech. Bill Clinton, in the audience, was ecstatic. So was the crowd. [More...]

Elizabeth Warren: I don't care for her speech. Just after Michelle Obama said we don't stoop to their level, she name-calls Trump with a string of personal attacks. Really unnecessary. Attack his position on issues, not his person. Saying he doesn't care about anyone but himself is her opinion. I don't like her colloquial speech, "My daddy" instead of "my father." She's not in the sticks anymore.

She channels Bernie supporters and says the system is rigged. Twice. She is way too divisive and judgmental for my taste. Her message to Republicans: "The American people are coming for you."

I really don't like her. Her name-calling borders on slanderous. This is not the way to convince people to vote for Hillary.

She says the system is rigged a third time. Does she care about anything but money and Wall St? She sounds just like Bernie. I'm glad Hillary passed on putting her on the ticket.

Original Post

I almost turned off the convention and gave up when even C-Span started adding twitter comments to the speeches. I refuse to read comments by people I've never heard of and could care less about, as filtered by some nameless employee of a TV network whose job it is to pick out tweets he or she finds interesting. Thankfully, C-Span stopped.

I saw a few seconds of Sarah Silverman. I've never liked her crude humor or her looks. She was a Bernie supporter, but tonight said she's proud to support Hillary. She told Bernie supporters who refuse to do likewise they are being "ridiculous." The camera panned on Susan Sarandon, who I've really lost all respect for as a result of her comments this election season. I change the channel when she comes on talk shows now.

Paul Simon was an unexpected benefit, kind of like comfort food. I didn't care that his voice doesn't sound the same. The clips of Mario Cuomo were terrific. [More...]

Eva Longoria was excellent -- both the content of her speech and the delivery. She's got a long history of social activism and philanthropy, I know why she was invited.

Corey Booker was passionate. "America, we will rise."

Now, it's victimhood time. Someone who went to Trump University. Who cares? I muted her.

What both conventions tell us: The voices of a minority of mostly young and very angry malcontents are drowning everyone else out. I'm so sick of them.

Michelle Obama was just introduced. (Updates will be at the top)

Michelle was definitely better.  The "folksy" is kind of funny, it struck me on stage that despite being senator of MA she's not a M@sshole, she's from Oklahoma, and it shows - in both good and bad ways I'm sure depending on your point of view.  Personally, I thought it was kind of cool just because I'm used to our politicians looking and sounding a certain way - and she is not that.

I get what you say about "stooping to that level" of criticizing Trump, but at the same time...  I honestly am just going to quote one of my facebook friends because they said it better than me:

"Here's the deal. The rest of us are in a pitched battle against a rising tide of xenophobia and hate that threatens the most vulnerable populations in America. Women, Muslims, immigrants, African Americans, people with disabilities, people who live below the poverty line, anyone falling under one of the LGBTQ letters. These people are all legitimately threatened by a Trump presidency. They will be actually and genuinely harmed. By Trump, his craven lackeys in Congress, and the Supreme Court Justice(s) he gets to appoint. I mean that their lives, livelihoods, and actual physical safety will be threatened in a way that they never would be under Clinton."

I'm glad that there is someone up there pointing this out.  Yes, it is great to have positive reasons to vote for Hillary.  But Trump is a threat in a way that not even Bush was - he gives political cover to the white power movement, in a way that's dangerous and pretty terrifying.

Also, economic issues should be front and center.  There's a lot of young people who don't have the same level of baggage about civil rights (it's taken for granted whether it should be or not), but they have a ton of economic baggage.  These people are ripe to be picked up by someone like Trump, and I'm not just talking about this election, I'm talking about the future of the country.

    Agreed. (5.00 / 1) (#63)

It was so beautiful when Michelle Obama said the lower they go, the higher they go.  But, surely, something that Trump would never understand having been friended and tutored by the dastardly Roy Cohn.

Senator Warren made her points and recognizes that winning against an aspiring despot like Trump means jettisoning Marquess of Queensberry rules.

    Parent

So what? I do hope you're not seriously advising us to wait until such fraud rises to the level of felonious behavior, before we then take it seriously.

In this particular matter, Trump's presently the target of two class-action civil suits filed against him in San Diego by former Trump U. students, who claim -- with justifiable reason, given the evidence publicly presented thus far -- that they were victims of a high-tech fleecing. They've charged Trump with racketeering.

(The "Mexican" federal judge overseeing these cases, Gonzalo Curiel, has recently indicated his intention to reject the defense motion for dismissal, and thus allow the lawsuits to go forward.)

These plaintiffs don't consider this matter "petty," and neither do I. They deserve to be heard, as do all those contractors who renovated Trump's Atlantic City properties, only to be subsequently stiffed on payment because his company conveniently declared bankruptcy and reneged on its obligations.

Scam artists like Trump needn't be charged as a criminal, to still be considered scam artists. And personally, I consider it a helluva lot more important for the public to know about this matter, than about what color dress Michelle Obama was wearing last night. And quite frankly, we should be hearing about this stuff BEFORE we go to the polls in November, and not after the fact.

    Aloha.

Collecting impressions of character through traits such as integrity of business dealings does not have to rise to the level of convicted felon before making an assessment of presidential fitness. Trump's suit is a civil one, and as such, an adverse decision would likely result in a monetary penalty. Even so, such a judgment is not necessary either, especially if a pattern of such behavior exists. A factor among factors for the electorate to consider.

assessment of Trump's business ethics, or lack thereof, is particularly relevant, in that his business is, essentially, his prime experience. And, his calling card--he can run America like a business.  If, it is to be like his business, it seems reasonable to find out about his businesses, beyond his telling us about it being great. "believe me." As St. Reagan said, trust, but verify.

This is all the more reason for Trump to release his tax returns for the past several decades. He should be proud to do so, if his wealth and good business dealing are "terrific."  Would not reveal everything, but a lot. A new TV. And trying to yank my foot back out of the screen just isn't fun. CNN is about to go to Franken though.

Republicans are none of the Democrats mentioned ISIS on the first night.

As I have posted before my prediction is events will determine this election.  The news out of Europe is

Elderly priest, 86, is 'beheaded' by two ISIS knifemen shouting 'Allahu Akbar' after they took nuns and worshippers hostage at French church: Police shoot both attackers dead then search for bombs.

Wonder if this will be mentioned tonight.

Of the post 9-11 "terrorism" voters.  People who supported Bush because they were afraid of terrorists.  They all seemed to live in the kind of places that never get attacked.

Oh yeah, they are, for their lives. Why do we have to discuss how Obama is having to whip the monster that Bush created with no boots on the ground and he's getting it done?

Can't we just celebrate a bit. When Obama took office everything was on fire. Iraq was on fire, Afghanistan was on fire, the economy was on fire.

Jesus Feck, leave us alone to have a convention you freakin torturers.

Thoughts from last night (none / 0) (#75)

I had to put aside Newsroom for the night because the Bernie show was too compelling.

Watched Cory thru Bernie (only part as I fell asleep)and here are a few thoughts -

Cory - tried too hard to emulate Barack's convention speech.  I didn't get the same "this guy will be president some day" feeling that I got after watching Barack's speech.

Michelle - class as always and a very good speech.  Would have enjoyed hearing a dig such as "don't worry if you miss some of my speech because I have a feeling you'll hear it again somewhere".

Elizabeth - I guess its more of a substance things that draws the left to her because I didn't find her charismatic at all.

Bernie - well he was Bernie.  Like I said, I fell asleep after he hit on tuition for all....who make less than $125K.

A few questions on some of the points made -

Is Warren, and I guess the Democratic Party in general, against all bankruptcy laws or just against a Republican utilizing them?  Bankruptcy laws serve a vital purpose in our economy.  I would love to hear an argument against them.

Is $125K the new threshold for being considered the evil upper class.  The bar keeps changing - in the wrong direction - so its rather hard to keep up.  Explain why a family in say Valdosta, GA making $124K (GA can confirm that is  huge salary for that area) is more deserving of assistance than a family in New York City making $175K with three kids.  By instituting a threshold you have created another have v have nots.
