Golden Globes Tonight

Update: Thank you, Meryl Streep. You made the entire 3 hour show worth watching. In accepting a lifetime achievement award, she blasted Donald Trump for his positions of foreigners, Hollywood, the press and especially the disabled, without ever mentioning his name. She called on the foreign press to support the Committee to Protect Journalists and hold Government accountable. The audience cheered her. If you get a chance to watch her speech, please do.

“You and all of us in this room belong to the most vilified segments of America right now: Hollywood, foreigners, and the press,” she said, with a hoarse voice, as the crowd roared.

....“Hollywood is crawling with foreigners and if you kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”

...Slamming Trump without actually naming him, she said “disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence,” after recalling an incident in which the now-president-elect in November appeared to mock the appearance of a New York Times reporter with a physical disability. “When the powerful use their position to bully, we all lose,” she added

The Golden Globes begin now, but apparently, are on time delay. They actually began an hour ago. I'm not providing online links because they are all abysmal. The amount of ads, disjointed screen-sizing, prevalence of commentators and auto-play video of things you have no interest in seeing is astounding. A truly awful online experience. The only way to enjoy this show is on a TV screen, after recording it and fast forwarding through the banter and commercials.

Jimmy Fallon is hosting (I'm not a fan of his, but I'll try to fairly report on the opening.) Added: Fallon's opening was boring. I realize everyone can't be James Corden, but there was simply nothing inspirational or funny about Fallon. He's so mainstream he's become as bland as mayonnaise.

If I find a decent link to red carpet photos without all the other nonsense, I'll post it.

If you are watching, please chime in.

Update: Best actor in a TV series goes to Billy Bob Thornton for a show called Goliath I've never even heard of. At least it didn't go to the Robot guy -- not only do I not like the show, I think the actor who portrays the main character is incredibly uncomfortable to watch. I think Matthew Rhys should have gotten it for his role in The Americans.

Did anyone know Nick Nolte and Selma Ward are in a new series called Graves? It airs on something called Epix. I really like both of them. Who'll Stop the Rain (1978) with Nick Nolte and Tuesday Weld is one of my all-time favorite movies. It's set in Berkeley at the end of the Vietnam War and is about inept attempts at heroin smuggling .

The merchant seaman (Nick Nolte) made a vow in the Marines that he would never again allow himself to be ordered around by morons, and that vow leads him into a lot of trouble in this movie. The husband (Michael Moriarty) didn't know beans about the drug scene when he went off to Vietnam, but, as Nolte tells the wife, "he made some new friends." And the wife (Tuesday Weld) did her part on the home front, by getting hooked on pills (Percodan).
It's based on Robert Stone's novel Dog Soldiers.
In Saigon during the waning days of the Vietnam War, a small-time journalist named John Converse thinks he'll find action - and profit - by getting involved in a big-time drug deal. But back in the States, things go horribly wrong for him. Dog Soldiers perfectly captures the underground mood of America in the 1970s, when amateur drug dealers and hippies encountered profiteering cops and professional killers - and the price of survival was dangerously high.

Not only are Nolte and Tuesday Weld great in it, but so are the actors who play really sleazy federal drug agents chasing them (in one scene the agents hold Michael Moriarty's hand to the hot burner on an electric stove -- I always have to fast forward past that part when I watch it.) Nolte's final scene of him walking down a railroad track holding his rifle like a soldier is very powerful. If you haven't seen it, it's streaming on Amazon and free for Prime members.

So what is EPIX? Never mind, Comcast/Xfinity doesn't carry it and it's only available to subscribers of certain services or on certain mobile devices. Who wants to watch TV on a mobile device except when you can't watch on TV? How stupid. Not to mention, this is about the fourth network I want to watch and can't because Xfinity either doesn't carry it or their on Demand for it is so limited. Cable is going to implode if it doesn't get quickly learn the proprietary age of TV networks is over. Who needs it when an antenna gets the major networks and local stations, and for $10 a month you can add Netflix, Hulu, and services that carry foreign shows?

Back to the Globen Globes, the actress Sarah Paulsen, who played Marcia Clark in the People v. O.J. Simpson won a best actress award. Really? I didn't like the show or her performance. The next award went to the OJ show as well.

Dresses I did not like: Almost every one in this series. Some of the most unflattering photos of people and dresses at an awards show I can remember. Even Heidi Klum missed the mark. What was Jennifer Beals thinking when she picked this dress?

More photos from the Daily Mail.

Update: LaLa Land is doing well with awards tonight. But I'm done, this show is just way too boring. (At least it was until Meryl Streep came on.) I think the Hollywood Foreign Press should skip NBC next year and air on a trendier network.

but Billy Bob Thornton was outstanding, and made it watchable. I didn't mind him winning, based on both that and Fargo, even though I also was hoping for Matthew Rhys.

Next year it better be Rufus Sewell for 'Man in the High Castle'. OMG.

The show was boring...Fallon does nothing for me. They should just have Hugh Laurie write and host all of these things. Also the commercials make me crazy so I turned over at 9 to watch Sherlock instead.

Had to replay Meryl and Viola this morning and was glad I did. Unfortunately, reading the comments about them this morning on twitter I realized that lacking the empathy gene means people can't even understand why some people have empathy for others. So really they should just shut up about things they can never understand...but they won't.

I came across a movie with Matthew Rhys playing twins. While I recognized him from 'somewhere' I had to go google to be reminded that it was from Brothers and Sisters. Where he didn't really make that much of an impression on me. But in this movie, The Scapegoat, he was so immensely likeable -- the nice twin, mind you ;) -- so for his likeability alone, which I somehow am certain is how he is in real life too, I would have loved for him to win. And finding out that his girlfriend is the equally likeable Keri Russell, just seems to fit. :)

i do know, for many, if you bleach medium blonde you often get the most delicate strawberry blonde (which aparently men think is adorable but i absolutely hate). the only solution is to double-process by stripping with a 30-volume bleach and then coloring with an ash.

Obviously, you people are misunderstanding what Tr*mp meant by "over-rated." Probably because you are focusing unfairly on what he says and writes (and does), instead of what is in his heart. The ratings of actresses that matter are on the classic 1-10 scale. Have you looked carefully at Meryl Streep's breast size? Are you being distracted by misleading indicators like Oscars, Golden Globes, the National Medal of Freedom, or Kennedy Center Honors? On the scale that matters to Tr*mp, she's not a "10," and thus clearly over-rated.

by Donald from Hawaii on Mon Jan 09, 2017 at 05:43:00 AM EST
... the most underrated films of the 1970s. I've turned any number of people onto it, and most all of them are blown away by how good it actually is. All of the performances are superb. If anyone here hasn't seen it yet, please heed Jeralyn's recommendation and do so. You likely won't be disappointed.

The actor who played the corrupt DEA agent dogging Nolte, Weld and Moriarty is Anthony Zerbe, an Emmy Award winner who at the time was perhaps best known for his extensive TV work. He's still working today, and was most recently seen in "American Hustle" (2013), as the U.S. senator who was swept up in the ABSCAM scandal.

who wrote the novel Dog Soldiers that Who'll Stop the Rain is based on, supposedly used his and Jack Kerouac's old friend Neal Cassady as the inspiration for the main protagonist Ray Hicks.

    I agree, it's a very underrated film.

The other post-Vietnam flick that slipped under the wire from that era was Cutter's Way. John Heard's performance in that one is incendiary.

When my wife and I first got together, I went down to meet her at the restaurant where she was waitressing, and when I walked into the place she was waiting on Anthony Zerbe and a friend.

Zerbe was here in a Rochester at that time setting up a theatre group called Reflecions.

We recently watched the 1978 Hal Ashby Vietnam-era drama "Coming Home" on the cable TV MGM channel, a film which I honestly had not seen since it first released when I was a high school senior. I guess I much have liked it a lot more back then, because I really don't remember it being so overtly melodramatic and emotionally manipulative 35+ years ago, as I found it to be the second time around. That experience certainly brought home to me how the passage of time can alter one's personal perspectives.

under-rated. I think Tuesday Weld generally is under-rated. I thought she was terrific
in Play it As it Lays (as was co-star Anthony Perkins), and she was nominated for a Golden Globe for it. It's one of my all time  favorite movies and is based on the book by Joan Didion, who used to be my favorite author back when she wrote those kinds of books. Tuesday Weld was also great as Diane Keaton's sister in Looking for Mr. Goodbar -- she got nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actress for it -- and even earlier in Pretty Poison (again with Anthony Perkins.) And even before that, she was inthe TV series Dobie Gillis  for which she she was named  co-winner of the "Most Promising Newcomer" award at the Golden Globe Awards

Looking for Mr. Goodbar (also with Richard Gere) would be way too depressing to watch again, but her other stuff I recommend.

I think that's part of the point of the show. Rami Malek  does an incredible job. He is supposed to be uncomfortable to watch. (I agree with that assessment.) But just because you don't like it, or he makes you uncomfortable, does not mean he is not doing an incredibly good job.
