ICE Detains 10 Year old With Cerebral Palsy After Surgery

In the "You Can't Make This Stuff Up" and "Why They Hate Us" Departments: ICE sat outside a hospital this week where a 10 year old with cerebral palsy was undergoing emergency gall bladder surgery, and when it was over and she was out of the recovery room, took her to an immigration facility 150 miles from her home.

"It is stunning that federal agents would wait outside of a hospital room for a 10-year-old child with cerebral palsy," U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro of Texas said. "They are treating her like a convict."

The child, Rosa Maria, was three months old when she was brought to the U.S. She has has the mental capacity of a four or five year old, and has no idea what is happening.

    I think about my almost-5 yr old grandson, and try to imagine the trauma he would be experiencing if he were in this situation, and I want to cry.

    If we allow this kind of evil to prevail, we are toast.

    according to reports today, and cannot see her family for three weeks of detention, which must be terrifying for any child but esp cially with her physicsl and cognitive disabilities. They only can talk on the phone, only occasionally and briefly, because the parents dare not again do the drive that requires the border patrol stop that caught them and started this horror.

    I hate this, and the Trump administration and all who support it.

    There is no excuse for treating any young child this way, but particularly one who is not only recovering from gall bladder surgery, but is developmentally disabled!
    She cannot understand what is being done to her, or why she cannot see her mother.
    If this was a private entity treating a child this way, Child and Protective Services would absolutely be on their @sses.
    ICE needs to be totally cleaned up and cleaned out.
    Fire everyone there and train some people to take over who have at least some humanitarian principles.
    I totally agree with you, Towanda.  I hate this, and I hate the whole administration and its supporters.
    Growing up, I was taught not to hate, but I cannot help it in this case.

    Despite so much resistance activity, I'm disheartened by the lack of democracy built into our system--the gerrymandering, electoral college, the capture of state legislatures by right-wing GOP.

    Fear that we may be losing the ability to rebound from the catastrophe of Nov 2016.

    We're not there yet.  But it's really hard sometimes to figure out what you're "supposed" to do in these scenarios.

    Germany was also a "Democratic Nation" when Hitler came to power.  So are a lot of nations with dictators today.

    I'd say right now the difference is there is still a legal and somewhat powerful opposition party.  But simply being a "Democratic Nation" is not always enough.

    I don't know what to do.  I know that right now I'm mostly staying silent and watching people, and not telling anyone I don't trust anything about my political views or family in the event that $hit does hit the fan.  

    And for the first time in my life I've seriously been considering owning a fire-arm for emergencies - and not the burglar kind.  The only reason I don't right now is I have no place secure to leave it, but I do know how to use it, and I also know that no one else in my family does, and these are the things that keep me awake at night.

    i live in seattle and support seattle as a sanctuary city and also oppose the detainment of people for nothing more than lack of documentation. this incident is particularely outrageous as it involves the detainment of a child being brought to hospital.

    i have repeated voiced my harsh criticism of roadside immigration checkpoints inside united states borders. it is fundamentally unAmerican and, in my opinion, a violation of essential rights as there is absolutt no probable cause other than `you look funny' or `you talk funny.' this is exactly what happened here. the young girl was being transported to hospital and the car was stopped at a roadside checkpoint in Freer, Texas - more than 60 miles inside the united states border. how is it resonable or rational that anyone can claim to establish the nationality or immigration status of a ten-year-old girl with cerebral palsy as she is being rushed to the hospital? it's hideous! these roadside checkpoints inside american borders need to be shut down.

    Earlier this week, Rosa Maria Hernandez, 10, previously residing in Laredo, Texas, rode in an ambulance with a relative through the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint in Freer, Texas. The girl was being rushed to Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi for gallbladder surgery.  At the checkpoint, authorities determined that the young girl was in the country illegally but allowed the vehicle to continue to Corpus Christi accompanied by agents, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection statement revealed.

    is that so many self-proclaimed religious folks support this kind of thing. I guess because Trump is a "baby Christian."

    The clergy as moral voice has wimped out and is showing signs of having fallen down on the job here Almost as bad as they did in a certain country in the nineteen thirties.

    But then, I suppose they'd respond that the Apostle Paul was a nasty, self-aggrandizing narcissicist into golden showers before the Lord spoke to him on the road to Damascus.
