Without funding from Congress, he can't hire 10,000 ICE agents. His order today states, "I have directed ICE to hire 10,000 officers and agents expeditiously, subject to available resources."
He cannot order the construction of more immigrant detention facilities without funding.
He can't fund a border wall without money from Congress. His implementation order directs "The Under Secretary for Management" to begin preparing a supplemental budget request for this year and future years. He can't just start building. He doesn't have the available funding.
His veiled threat to Mexico (by ordering a report on how much aid we give them other than for intelligence) will backfire. Mexico has already promised to ramp up its consular assistance to its citizens affected by Trump's order. It will double down against him.
Americans will pay the price for Trump's ignoble, biased orders when the bulk of avocados and other things we love that are made in Mexico will be shipped to Canada, Europe and elsewhere in the world instead of the U.S. The price of cherry tomatoes, mangoes, blueberries, limes -- and avocados -- and so many other foods we enjoy will skyrocket.
There aren't enough immigration judges to handle the present case load -- let alone the huge quantity of new cases that his implementation order would require. He has no funds to hire them.
As for getting state law enforcement agencies to enforce federal immigration laws, he's calling for DOJ to enter more "287 (g) partnership agreements - which were abandoned years ago and a failure. When Trump invaded the Oval Office, there were only 37 law enforcement agencies in the country (among every local law enforcement agency in every town and city in America) who had an existing 287(g)agreement. Since taking office, the number is 38. (You can read each agreement and see the signatories at the same page.)
No state law enforcement has to sign an "agreement." It's voluntary. Tell your local elected officials to just say no, and you'll vote against any sheriff who signs one and any city council member who authorizes a local police department or county sheriff to sign one. Trump's blast from the failed past of 287(g) agreements:
I am directing the Director of ICE and the Commissioner of CBP to engage immediately with all willing and qualified law enforcement jurisdictions that meet all program requirements for the purpose of entering into agreements under 287(g) of the INA.
Also keep in mind Trump's orders today are implementation orders of his prior executive immigration orders, which are being fought in the Courts. If his executive orders are thrown out, these implementation orders will be meaningless.
The ACLU says:
The Trump administration is willing to trample on due process, human decency, the well-being of our communities, and even protections for vulnerable children, in pursuit of a hyper-aggressive mass deportation policy.
President Trump does not have the last word here. The courts and the public will not allow this un-American dream to become reality.
Support the ACLU. Give generously.
No human being is illegal. In my personal opinion, Donald Trump is an embarrassment to America. It is unbelievable that tens of millions of Americans must cringe in shame at the thought that such an unworthy, inexperienced, ill-intentioned, unknowledgeable, crude and vulgar person occupies the Oval Office. Especially when 3 million more Americans voted against him than for him.
Trump, the Illegitimate. 1,349 days left and counting.
