U.S. Airstrike Reportedly Takes Out Baghdadi in Idlib

Donald Trump is very excited. He will hold a presser during Sunday morning news shows to tell everyone a U.S. airstrike he approved took out ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi.

There are multiple reports among Middle East sources claiming al-Baghdadi toggled his suicide vest and killed himself.

Iraqi TV says it will air the raid footage, and that Iraqi intelligence helped pinpoint Baghdadi's location.

Turkey too is claiming its share of credit, saying they knew Baghdadi was in Idlib two days ago and they got a warning about the imminent US raid.

A Syrian Human Rights group says 9 people were killed in the raid. I've seen pictures of two dead males laying on the ground but neither was Baghdadi. [More...]

Other reports say Baghdadi's bodyguard and wives were with him and they were also killed. The raid may have taken place near the village of "Barisha" in Idlib in NW Syria, which serves as headquarters to several competing extremist organizations. A question analysts are asking: What was al-Baghdadi doing in Idlib given that it is hardly friendly territory? According to one report, Hayat Tahrir Sham "carries out nearly weekly raid operations on ISIS sleepercells and executes them." The answer may simply be he had no friendly territories left, and Barisha was simply on his escape route to Turkey.

When Drama Queen-in- Chief Donald Trump tries to take all the credit today for killing al-Baghdadi, someone should remind him of this tweet he posted when Osama bin Laden was killed.

In any event, the death of Baghdadi won't end ISIS any more than El Chapo's life sentence defeated the Sinaloa cartel. Chopping off the head of the snake does little when three or four or a hundred more wannabes are chomping at the bit to take his place.

his followers are maximally outraged by the death of al-Baghdadi, compare him to an unclean animal.

Trump could've attempted to make an eloquent plea for militants to come to their senses, but that would've required him to be a different person and not the wild-swinging slob he is.

The amount of oil is really pretty insignificant

I heard something like .05% of daily production.

A couple of bird killing windmills would cover it.

It sounds like he probably did that weird "something happened" tweet before they were out and safe.

Which would explain the long delay in following up.  Someone probably kicked in his bedroom door and took his phone.

Is there any reason to doubt that there are dozens more around who can fill Baghdadi's place?  I am still awaiting proof that ignoring the ISIS "threat" by withdrawing US troops is a bad policy. Are the alternatives to ISIS that much better?
