Cher: The Icon

Cher was the star guest on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last night. Towards the end of the show, the three singer-actresses who play her in the Broadway show "Cher" came on with her for a talking segment. After the commercial break, the three actresses were on stage singing "If I Could Turn Back Time." At one minute and 2 seconds in, Cher joined them.

After another commercial, the lead Cher actress was on stage singing "You Got Me Babe" with the Cher show cast member who plays Sonny(he is absolutely adorable.) About 1 minute and 3 seconds into the song, Cher comes out, dressed in an almost identicial outfit as the actress just singing and continues the duet with Sonny.

When Cher belted out the line "I got you to understand", I got chills up and down my arms that stayed for the rest of the song. It was just like watching them in 1965. Her voice remains incredibly strong and she is great physical shape -- even her skin has never looked better. [More...]

Here are Cher and the three actresses joyously singing "If I Could Turn Back Time".

Cher is 72 years old. She is embarking on a new U.S. tour this week, which ends with five nights in Las Vegas on September 1. After three weeks off in September, she heads to Europe where she will tour from Sept. 26 to November 3, before taking two weeks off and then on November 19, hitting the road again for the rest of her U.S. tour. On November 25, she be at Denver's Pepsi Center. Tickets for Denver are available now here.

This praise is not because Cher is the best singer in the world -- there are certainly rivals on that score -- but because she has been such an enduring icon over the past 50 years. I think her only living rivals are Tina Turner and Diana Ross. Grace Slick and Joni Mitchell also come to mind, but they have been out of the public eye for decades. Cher is the only one still touring at age 72 -- in a solo show, no less. (Although Stevie Nicks, also an icon but to a lesser extent, who turns 70 this year, is catching up.)

    I have always loved Cher. (5.00 / 1) (#10)

When the Sonny and Cher show was on TV, I thought Cher was the hottest women on the planet. I have three Cher albums on my work computer alongside Black Sabbath, Wishbone Ash and Frank Zappa.

She was good in the movie Mask as well as Silkwood and Moonstruck. Oh yeah. And Mermaids.

I was the roadie for the Sons of Champlin for 42 years.  In 1976 we toured with the Average White Band.

The original drummer for AWB had famously died of an overdose, after snorting heroin at a Hollywood party, thinking it was cocaine.

Hamish Stewart, the front man and singer for AWB told us that Cher saved his life, because he had also snorted the H, and she recognized what was going on. She got him to his feet and walked him around, which apparently is a counter measure to a heroin OD.

In any event, he was adamant that Cher saved his life.

I can just see her doing that (none / 0) (#16)

she has very big soul. I only met her once at a New Years party she and Chevie Chase and Paul Simon were hosting at a local restuarant, but she was very nice. Another time I got to meet Sonny when a friend and I decided to crash his weddint to Susie Cuelo. It was a beauiful wedding and party but it was so cold and we had to walk through what seemed like miles of snow --it felt like we were extras on a Dr. Zhivago scene trying to reach the palace. At least we finally made it and were welcomed in and met some fun people.

At least you won't become a white walker!

Back to Cher though, I adore her too. One of the first albums I ever bought myself was one of her first solo albums -the one with her hair covering her face on the cover. It is a great album - I should buy it on digital!

see Cher on Broadway. My those clips are wonderful but I've long been a Cher fan going back to the days of the Sonny and Cher Show and I was in 6th grade and I and family members would watch their show every time it was on TV.

But I'm pretty sure I wouldn't see that show

I've seen way better drag versions of Cher, voice and all, than any of those women.

They definitely should have gotten drag queens to do it.

Although I really did not think they were that good.  They might have seemed better if Cher had not been on stage with them

    Just my opinion.
