Pre-Democrat Debate Thread

Night one of the two night debate among the numerous candidates vying for the Democrats' Presidential nomination and chance to beat Donald Trump is tonight.

Have any of you picked a candidate yet? I have not. Out of those debating tonight, I think Elizabeth Warren has the best overall policies and provides the strongest contrast to Donald Trump.
Does that mean she can beat him? If the election were held today, maybe not. But I think it depends on the disgust factor with Trump next November. If it is as high as I expect it to be, and he doesn't appreciably increase his under-informed base, I think any Democrat will beat him, even in the swing states. [More...]

I'm more interested in tomorrow night's debate. My biggest hope: Biden makes a spectacular gaffe as he is known to do. I will not support him due to his horrible 25 year record on crime legislation. And I have no more affinity for Sanders now than I did in 2016. In addition, like Biden, Sanders is just too old. Whether it's ego, vanity or the fear of retirement that keeps these two septugenarians trying to stay relevant, it's time for them to graciously pass their batons to the next generation.

Also tomorrow night, I expect John Hickenlooper to do well. I think he is emblematic of the 180 degree difference between a leader with mental stability and Donald Trump.

Your thoughts?

    Took something of a break (5.00 / 2) (#2)

From it all.  Or most of it. For a couple of weeks.  I have to say things are looking a bit less dark.  The debate is going to get lots of coverage.  Mueller is finally going to testify in public.  Trump seems more insane and untethered by the day and I'm sensing an exhaustion from Trumpoloids.  And a rising disgust with the treatment of children and the possibility of war and the like from the so called normals.

It's like everyone is waking up and realizing they are numb but not comfortably numb.  Uncomfortably numb.

    People seem twitchy

to see how much Mueller's testimony pierces the nonsense of the Magat crowd. It was interesting and not surprising at the same time that one of the people at Amash's town hall didn't know that Trump was not cleared.

I'm no on that are debating tonight:
    Beto
    Delaney
    de Blasio
    Ryan
    Gabbard.

The rest I am interested in hearing what they have to say.

    Maybe it's the fact that he's losing (5.00 / 1) (#3)
by CST on Wed Jun 26, 2019 at 03:28:32 PM EST
But I'm warming up to Beto.  At the very least he hasn't done anything egregious besides being a bit green (IMO) but relative to some of the other candidates he's downright full of experience. I probably won't vote for him but I don't hate him in the race.

Embarrassed to say I don't know all the people on your list, but I certainly agree with Gabbard and De Blowhard.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow night a lot more.  Hoping to see Harris break out, especially against the senior citizens.

    The press (none / 0) (#5)

ignoring Beto has actually helped him IMO. The worshipful tone of the press was a real turn off for me. My issue really has to do with the lack of experience he has and there's really nothing he can do to change that. We have so many qualified candidates I just don't see wasting any time on those who are not qualified.

Let Joe and Pete say a bunch of stupid stuff. Warren and Harris probably aren't going to say stupid stuff (a luxury no female candidate can afford).

I believe it benefits Booker too.

by CST on Wed Jun 26, 2019 at 04:10:35 PM EST
Is afraid of losing to Trump but I really hope we can all collectively get over Joe Biden.

Also if Bernie fell off the stage (literally) we would all be better off.  He's already threatening to contest the convention.  I just keep wondering how 15% of Democratic voters actually think a revolution is coming.  More like the end of Les Miserables - it's just those guys alone on the barricades, no one is joining them.

    Maybe Bernie (5.00 / 1) (#11)
by Ga6thDem on Wed Jun 26, 2019 at 04:16:34 PM EST
will show up at the debates with another Kotex on his forehead from falling in the shower. It would be the next best thing to him just falling off the stage.

The whole Biden and Bernie leading in the polls has really frustrated me because in my opinion they are the two WORST candidates we have running besides the joke candidates like Marianne Williamson.

Booker has a history of shining in these types of venues. Pete generally has well thought out responses but Joe never seems to filter anything out of his mouth. Pete just frankly lacks experience like Beto. I'm wondering if Bernie and Joe are going to get into a death spiral because you know Bernie sees Joe as his main threat and you know Biden is going to go on the attack against Bernie.

is that the most likely contenders to meet the foundational criterion of defeating Trump are Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden.  However, Warren is likely to grow stronger over time while Biden may weaken----not so much due to debates (he did well against Palin and Ryan) where the time is short, but on the campaign trail .

As for the other criteria, Warren presents substance for the future. Biden more platitudes and his past experiences.

The other candidates will do well but they are less known and may or may not catch up.
