    It's not Parasite?

It was very good.  I just don't think it's the best movie of the year.

I agree that it's very good, as are "The Irishman" and "Jojo Rabbit." But were I an Academy member, I'd vote for "1917." Of the eight films nominated for Best Picture, those four truly stood out to me, with "1917" standing a wee bit taller.

I think 1917 should winfor cinematography and effects maybe editing.  I don't really think it's the best movie.

Joaquin Phoenix clearly deserves to be named Best Actor for "Joker," and I'll frankly be shocked if he isn't. But the rest of the film is simply too relentless in its ready embrace of the dark side for my tastes. I mean, "Joker" tried really hard to leave me, the viewer, feeling empty and depressed as I departed the theatre, as though I had just binge-read autobiographies by John Wayne Gacy and Jeffrey Dahmer. And it succeeded.

Speaking for myself, that "Joker" is being taken seriously at all by Academy voters is entirely due to Phoenix's powerful and affecting performance as the title character. Watching Arthur Fleck inexorably descend into madness and nihilism was really the best thing in an emotionally manipulative movie that's admittedly well-crafted, yet strangely and ultimately shallow.

And yes, Joaquin Phoenix is really that good. I've seen very few actors who've been able to successfully carry the dead weight of an entire movie on their backs and actually make it better than it probably and otherwise deserved to be. This was one of those performances, and had that role been in the hands of a lesser talent, the entire enterprise would likely have been remembered only as one of the year's biggest flops.

    Aloha.

Roger Deakins won for his cinematography in "1917." That's his second Academy Award in four years. His other Oscar is for "Blade Runner 2049." He was also nominated in 2013 for the James Bond classic "Skyfall," which like "1917" was also directed by Sam Mendes.

The job of cinematographer is one that's mostly unsung, but in my estimation its importance to a film cannot be overstated. One primary reason Sam Mendes is such an acclaimed director is because Roger Deakins is his partner, and Deakins' work with the cameras elevates the work product and makes everybody look good.

I'm not disappointed that "1917" didn't win Best Picture. I've always been of the mind that Oscar nominations themselves are the true measure of accomplishment for those in the biz, because your peers have honored your work as among the five best in your category for that particular year. And this year, there were a lot of really good films to choose from.

    • Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker in "The Dark Knight" and "Joker."
