Labor Day Weekend Open Thread

The Rolling Stones and Axl Rose of Guns 'N Roses singing "Salt of the Earth." It's my favorite song for Labor Day.

Below is one of my favorite sculptures. It is in downtown Omaha, at the Lewis & Clark landing, along Omaha's Missouri River Walkway. Created by Matthew Placzek, it is the second-largest labor monument in the U.S.. Two-hundred-fifty tons of cement and 39,000 pounds of steel were used in its construction.

Larger version here. If you are ever in downtown Omaha, I highly recommend seeing it up close. The trail that leads to it is right by most of the major downtown hotels.

Enjoy the weekend everyone and if you are going out, please avoid large crowds.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

Trump boat parade ends in disaster after multiple vessels sink in Texas lake

Several boats have sunk on Lake Travis in Austin because they were being "unruly" and not following the rules, according to EMS. A bunch of people are having to be rescued. Guess what these people are doing? A trump rally boat parade 😐

    Paris Art Caper (5.00 / 1) (#9)
by KeysDan on Sun Sep 06, 2020 at 12:06:12 PM EST
Trump's cancellation of the trip to the American Cemetery in Belleau Wood, France to honor war dead because of "inclement weather" and despite the fact that no one in the history of the world loves the military more than him, left a hole in his busy Paris schedule.

So, with time on his hands, Trump scouted the historic American Embassy in Paris, where he was staying, and found art work that he could not live without. Trump had a truck backed up to the Embassy and loaded a Ben Franklin bust, a Franklin portrait and a set of silver figurines of Greek mythical characters to be taken to Air Force One for his use at the White House.

The caper has a Trumpian ending, however. The figurines were determined to be "20th Century fakes of 17th Century sculptures", and of little value.

White House art curators found that the Franklin bust was a replica. The Franklin portrait was a copy of a Joseph Duplessis; the original, painted in 1795,  was then held by the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.

The curators subsequently borrowed the original Duplessis from the national gallery and that is the one that now hangs in the Oval Office, not the lesser replica that Trump took from the Embassy.

How May Day became Labor Day (5.00 / 3) (#35)
by jondee on Mon Sep 07, 2020 at 02:47:57 PM EST
Peter Linebaugh, my old next-door neighbor, filled me in years ago about how the international worker's holiday on May the 1st became our familiar September holiday..

In 1887, Grover Cleveland and friends and colleagues decided to support Labor Day in September as a "less inflammatory alternative" to the traditional May 1st worker's holiday, which Cleveland feared would stir up memories of the Chicago Haymarket Square massacre/riot of the year before and possibly embolden the U.S socialist and anarchist movements that supported celebrating the international May 1st holiday.

A little history retrieved from the memory hole..

(Sigh!) It's probably just as well that they supported the less inflammatory alternative. "Workers of the world, unite! And head on over to your nearest Sleep Number store for great bargains this International Workers Day weekend!" as a TV jingle doesn't have that proper resonance, you know? It's just a real mouthful. So, good for Grover Cleveland to have thought that far ahead.

    Smokin' Joe Biden.

Scientific American has never endorsed a presidential candidate in its 175-year history. This year we are compelled to do so. We do not do this lightly.

The evidence and the science show that Donald Trump has badly damaged the U.S. and its people--because he rejects evidence and science. The most devastating example is his dishonest and inept response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which cost more than 190,000 Americans their lives by the middle of September. He has also attacked environmental protections, medical care, and the researchers and public science agencies that help this country prepare for its greatest challenges. That is why we urge you to vote for Joe Biden, who is offering fact-based plans to protect our health, our economy and the environment. These and other proposals he has put forth can set the country back on course for a safer, more prosperous and more equitable future.

The Pence/ Senator Kaine debate in 2016 was, essentially, a surrogate event for Trump and Secretary Clinton with little discussion of the two vice-presidential candidates themselves.

Hopefully, the Harris/Pence event will allow Senator Harris to compare and contrast herself with the fanaticism and ineptness of Pence, his role in the Trump Administration as a Trump's "fourth wife", and, as with Trump, is unfit for the office of Vice President, and, certainly, that of president.

"Trump's disdain for Obama was so extreme that he took his fixation a step further, according to Cohen: Trump hired a `Faux-Bama' to participate in a video in which Trump `ritualistically belittled the first black president and then fired him.'"

"Cohen's book, Disloyal: A Memoir, doesn't name the man who was allegedly hired to play Obama or provide a specific date for the incident, but it does include a photograph of Trump sitting behind a desk, facing a Black man wearing a suit with an American flag pin affixed to the lapel. On Monday night, the New York Times published an article so satisfying that it felt almost pornographic, about how the Trump campaign has burned through most of that Death Star cash, with little to show for it -- except, of course, when it comes to the bank accounts of the Trump family and their ancillary leeches.

It appears much of the problem was the way that Trump himself, along with Parscale, the Trump's family and other associates, treated the campaign as a personal piggybank. Trump paid his family's enormous legal bills with campaign cash. Money was routinely spent to fluff Trump's ego, as with the reported $11 million spent on Super Bowl ads. Nearly a third of the cash was routed through "a single limited liability company linked to Trump campaign officials." The partners of Trump's two sons are literally on the payroll. Trump's own incompetence is also a factor, leading to massive losses as he impulsively switched the Republican convention from Charlotte to Jacksonville to and then, effectively, to Washington. And the campaign spent far more money on fundraising than is typical, suggesting that Parscale was more interested in bragging about his Death Star than making it run efficiently.

Say what you will about Darth Vader, but at least he didn't destroy the Empire by greedily sucking all its resources dry so nothing was left to fight the rebels.

Death Star blows itself up: Trump ran his campaign finances like his businesses -- into the ground
It's no surprise that Trump's campaign is a giant grift. But will his donors keep pouring good money after bad?

The U.S. Justice Department is seeking to take over the defense of President Trump in a defamation suit brought by advice columnist E. Jean Carroll, who claims Trump raped her two decades ago, Bloomberg reports.

In a court filing Tuesday, the Justice Department said Trump was acting "within the scope" of his job as president when he said Carroll lied about the incident, prompting her lawsuit.

Democrats are amassing an enormous lead in early voting, alarming Republicans who worry they'll need to orchestrate a huge Election Day turnout during a deadly coronavirus outbreak to answer the surge.

The Democratic dominance spreads across an array of battleground states, according to absentee ballot request data compiled by state election authorities and analyzed by Democratic and Republican data experts. In North Carolina and Pennsylvania, Democrats have a roughly three-to-one advantage over Republicans in absentee ballot requests. In Florida -- a must-win for President Donald Trump -- the Democratic lead stands at more than 700,000 ballot requests, while the party also leads in New Hampshire, Ohio and Iowa.

Republican justices just screwed up another election, invalidating all mail ballots, already printed-- with only a week to go to the deadline for all ballots to be in the mail.

And almost 490,000 already have gone out, so those voters would get a second ballot . . . and we can see the screams of voter fraud to come from a confused electorate.

The Republican majority on the court overruled the Election Commission's ruling that the Green Party would not be on the ballot.

After all, the Green Party got Jill Stein more votes in Wisconsin in 2016 than the margin that won the state for Trump.

the PA supreme Court rules that official drop-boxes are legal for submission of "mail-in" ballots (giving PA a sort of "early voting" for the first time), that mailed ballots can be counted if they arrive by Friday after Election Day, so long as they are post-marked by Tuesday (or if the postmark is illegible - doubt goes to validity if arrival is by Friday), and that the requirement that poll watchers be residents of the county is valid (no Upstate goons coming down to challenge and intimidate voters of color in Phila, as had been threatened). Only things the D's asked for that the court did not grant was that "naked" mail-ins (lacking the outer security envelope) must not be counted. D's wanted all ballots to count absent affirmative evidence of fraud. And the court upheld the law that each person must deliver their own ballot (fear of "ballot harvesting," which has been associated here with fraud). Overall a big boost to Blue chances in Pennsylvania.

I believe Tom Wolf and Rachel Levine have done an excellent job trying to manage COVID-19 in PA. I say "trying" because of the large number of orange cultists around York and Adams counties. They may be over in Lancaster as well, but I haven't been over that way in a few months. If these idiots had just gone along with the program (masks, distancing, shutdowns) from the start, the entire thing would under control already and we could be back to semi-normal. But no, they have fought everything from the get go and exacerbated the entire ordeal.

I had to take a drive Tuesday down to Leesburg, VA by way of Adams County. I am happy to report a lot more Biden signs now in front yards and along the roadways. Orange doofus still outnumbers, but good to see Biden/Harris support.

She lives in this recently built very "Wayne Manor" looking house on a bluff overlooking Spring River.  Supposedly the largest (sq ft) house in the entire state.

I doubt she will be there behind the counter I'm sure she will be around and at least involved in the opening.

Interesting bit, she and her partner applied for two places but only got one.  (She also got a grower permit) They were going to put in in an abandoned strip mall about 15 miles from here in another town.

a "debate" for four seconds let alone four hours.  Joe Biden should not dignify a Trumpapolooza with his presence.  The debates already scheduled wil be made into a circus---invite a clown and that is what you get.

Biden should condition all debates with a Trump disavowal of his buddy, Roger Stones's, utterances regarding a coup by martial law, the Insurrection Act, and whisking away ballots cast in Nevada by federal agents.  Stone is not just another Republican, but a convicted felon (commuted sentence) who is a long-time Trump friend and confidant.  Also, Biden should require that each candidate provide tax returns.

Biden will do very well. My concern is the non-stop lying and belittling. And, propaganda.   Biden's debate coaches will surely have a debate themselves on how to best handle Trump.

And, of course, the real issue is how the media will cover it. Biden may mis-state the number of Covid-19 deaths by one hundred and the reporting will be that Biden is losing it.

Trump, may, once again, detail the Revolutionary War as Washington taking over the airports of the Delaware seizing victory from Cornwallis at Yorktown (the Trump crowd clapped at the line with great joy).  Hardly a media peep---things like that just happen, you know.

It is definitely going to be where no election has gone before.

All that said, I have another possibility.  A more hopeful one.

Trump will continue having super spreader events.  He is having one right now which is the first, but certainly not the last, one to be INDOORS.

it is not impossible that many Trump supporters are going to get sick.  And they will be getting sick right at election time.  I think it's totally possible that come Nov 3rd we will be in the middle of a new fall surge brought on by all the factors like being indoors more but also because of Trumps events that could be so bad many, especially older voters, will NOT come out to vote in person.  This is a big fear of republicans.

Trump could even get it himself.

I still think that would be the only fitting and believable karmic end to this campaign.

"Mike Bloomberg plans to spend at least $100 million in Florida to help elect Democrat Joe Biden, a massive late-stage infusion of cash that could reshape the presidential contest in a costly toss-up state central to President Trump's reelection hopes," the Washington Post reports.

"Bloomberg made the decision to focus his final election spending on Florida last week, after news reports that Trump had considered spending as much as $100 million of his own money in the final weeks of the campaign, Bloomberg's advisers said. Presented with several options on how to make good on an earlier promise to help elect Biden, Bloomberg decided that a narrow focus on Florida was the best use of his money."

That won't stop him from trying but it's a much bigger lift if he is clearly losing FL.

Crushing him in FL might be the only way to stop what Trump is planning.   Or at least deny it enough oxygen to live.

The story said they plan to spend at least 100 million.  That's a helluva lot for any one state.   That means he's prepared to do whatever it takes.  Which he can afford to do.  And it makes me feel better.

Bloomberg's advisers say his Florida investment offers multiple benefits for Democrats: It frees up Democratic cash, allowing the campaign and outside groups to focus on other key swing states; it requires Republicans to spend more heavily to make up for the disparity there; and a decisive win by Biden in Florida could help tamp down efforts most Democrats are expecting from Trump to discount the results of the election.

Florida election officials can start counting absentee ballots weeks before Election Day, which means they're typically able to report those results -- which tend to favor Democrats -- that night. And Trump has praised Florida's mail ballot system, meaning if Biden wins there, it will be tougher for Trump to reverse course on the state.

"It's pretty important for the democracy if Biden does win for us to be able to call Florida on election night," said Kevin Sheekey, Bloomberg's longtime adviser.

ICE whistleblower: Nurse alleges 'hysterectomies on immigrant women in US'

She worked at the centre, which houses immigrants detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
As part of her complaint, filed on Monday, Ms Wooten expressed concerns about the high number of hysterectomies performed on Spanish-speaking women at the centre.
The nurse said detained women told her they did not fully understand why they had to get a hysterectomy - an operation involving the removal of all or part of the uterus.
The complaint also alleges "jarring medical neglect" during the coronavirus pandemic, including a refusal to test detainees with symptoms and fabricating medical records.
"I became a whistleblower, now I'm a target," Ms Wooten said at a press conference on Tuesday. But, "I'll be a target anytime", she said, rather than staying a part of what she called an "inhumane" system.

I doubt Mitch will be able to get a vote in the next six weeks.  Murkowski just indicated that won't happen.  So if it happens it will be in the lame duck.  That's seems inevitable.  Passage is another thing.

Ginsburgs literal dying wish was that she be replaced by a new president.  It will be interesting to see what senators who have (possibly) already lost do with that.  Will Susan Collins want to ignore that.  Will Corey Gardner.

Garland was nominated on March 16, 2016, but never received a hearing or vote from Republicans then controlling the Senate.

But if we're looking for consistency, we're better off looking at a Xerox copier than the GOP.

Axios: "It was the highest single-day increase since August 14, when the country reported 64,350 new cases over a 24-hour span, and suggests that the U.S. has yet to contain the spread of the virus."

    More grifters, those lawyers (5.00 / 1) (#199)

They lost 3 out of 4 issues they raised in the PA Supreme Court, and their proposed US Supreme Court challenge to the points they lost sounds frivolous to me. Of course, I thought the issue on which Bush prevailed in Bush v Gore was legally frivolous also, so take my opinion for what it's worth. As I've commented before, election law rulings seem to be more partisan in the Supreme Court than any other aspect of the court's docket. So even though C.J. Roberts has not generally been buying Tr*mp's lawyers' bullsh!t on immigration law, the census, immunity, LGBTQ rights, abortion, etc., I am not reassured in looking toward him as savior here.

my impression was they are there to throw sand in the gears at every opportunity.  Delay, confuse and obfuscate.

They are probably well aware of the frivolity

nothing matters and people know who Trump is.  Which is true.    But I think this will matter.  More so a month before this election.

Associated Press: "Mattis and Coats, like former White House chief of staff John Kelly and former national security adviser H.R. McMaster, have refrained from more explicit condemnations, often citing a `duty of silence' or a long tradition of military officials staying out of politics."

"Efforts to draw them out are ongoing. While former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen appears disinclined to step forward, there are hopes that former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson might be persuaded to comment and that Coats might be urged to say more. And Kelly, a retired four-star general, is said to be on the fence and torn about the decision."

are patriots and concerned about the future of the republic, they will ignore any "duty of silence" and inform the American people of the danger they face by the current occupant of 1600 PA Ave.

Their duty is to the country and its citizens.
