Saturday Open Thread: Fight or Flight?

"You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows" for Donald Trump. (Bob Dylan, Suberteranean Homesick Blues)

If Trump resigns, won't Pence just pardon him the way Ford pardoned Nixon? I'd rather see him stay and try to pardon himself, which will end up costing him millions in legal fees over the next few years as the courts debate whether he has the power to do that.

I think a charge of seditious conspiracy is the way to go. Maybe he will be hit with a federal complaint on January 21 after which they will take it to the grand jury so there is no question they did not indict a sitting President.

Things to be happy about: Don, Jr and Kimberly, Ivanka and Lara Trump will never be the second round of Trumps to win electoral office. Jared will never again be the power behind the throne, in charge of the little people who work at the White House.

Just for more fun, re-read Hunter Thompson's 1994 obituary for Richard Nixon, "He Was a Crook".

He was a swine of a man and a jabbering dupe of a president....He has poisoned our water forever. Nixon will be remembered as a classic case of a smart man shi*ting in his own nest. But he also sh*t in our nests, and that was the crime that history will burn on his memory like a brand. By disgracing and degrading the Presidency of the United States, by fleeing the White House like a diseased cur, Richard Nixon broke the heart of the American Dream.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) said House Democrats might wait until after President-elect Joe Biden's first 100 days in office to send any articles of impeachment against President Trump to the Senate, a move that would give the incoming President time to tackle his agenda in Congress before the start of a time-consuming trial, CNN reports.

Said Clyburn: "We'll take the vote that we should take in the House, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi will make the determination as to when is the best time to get that vote and get the managers appointed and move that legislation over to the Senate."

While this is a very clever and effective rhetorical idea I call bullshi+.

These time are not for "public servants" who are cowering pu$$ies.  If you can't take the heat get the f'ck out of the kitchen and out of the way so someone with a spine can take over.

...in that they stroked and coddled the lunatic fringe for years, helped promote them from fringe to mainstream.  Then got into bed with them over the election fraud non-sense to further their careers and now they are scared of turning their backs on the very vipers they created.

Great, makes sense, if that is the story they are going with, either step down or remove them because their ability to govern has been compromised.  They are no longer voting on what they feel is the best for the country based their own admissions. The reason really doesn't matter at this point, what matters is they aren't able to do their jobs and serve the country.

In my opinion, that excuse is worse that siding with the lunatics, it's like the idiots that sell poisonous snakes and then when they eventually get out, and they always do, they whine that they can't go home because their house has been overrun by dangerous vipers.

To them I say, "No one to blame here but the a-holes in the mirror." Just too bad they have put their loved ones in position where they could be harmed because of their political ambition.

I have little doubt the crowd chanting 'Hang Pence' as they beat a cop to death is capable of harming, or at the very least, scaring the crop out anyone.  Personally I don't care if that is the truth or just an a lame excuse, they aren't able to perform their duties and need to go.

When I put my tin foil hat on I'm starting to see some really odd decisions by law enforcement last Wed.

So, the FBI reportedly physically visited dozens of known domestic terror threats prior to Wed and said basically we are watching you.  So evidently many of the heavy hitters and possibly leaders stayed home.  Likely leading to the fratboy/pigfu'k feel of the whole thing.

Yet they issued no warnings prior, made no preparations or efforts to secure the Capitol

Here comes the tinfoil, it's almost like they said let's just let these idiots swarm.  Clearly they are to stupid to do any real harm. (A decision that looks like a poor choice in hind sight).

Former Republican South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy said Thursday that he's "not real sure anymore" what the Republican Party "stands for" as he blamed President Donald Trump for the Capitol riot Wednesday.

Gowdy said he did not know what role, if any, Trump would continue to play in the Republican Party but suggested the president incited the riot.

"Did you listen to the president's speech yesterday?" Gowdy asked Fox News host Sandra Smith.

"Then you tell me. Who said that? Who said go fight? Who blamed Mike Pence and blamed Republicans and said the election was stolen?" Gowdy asked.

But now the arrests are for major felonies and I would guess in June most were nuisance misdemeanors, harassment essentially.  I doubt many even stuck once in court.  Not that it isn't BS, but these guys are going down.  They are going to be the example of how America handles people storming the seat of government.

I keep readying about maybe using RICO or the law that provides anyone involved in the criminal conduct can be held accountable for the crimes their partners commit, as in murder charges for all.  They are all screwed.

I think it's time to stop putting BLM and insurrectionists into the same conversation about anything.  The white folks in this story aren't getting the kid gloves treatment because they are white.  I think a lot of these groups are about to feel what it's like to have the government breathing down their necks everytime they step outside.

    2. What other crimes did the attackers potentially commit?

Legal experts say a wide variety of crimes occurred, and prosecutors could charge individuals even if they walked away from the incident without being detained. Members of the mob could be charged with trespassing, the "willful injury of federal property," and firearms offenses. Two explosive devices were recovered. A specific statute governs unlawful activities on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol, making it illegal to "step or climb on, remove, or in any way injure any statue, seat, wall, fountain, or other erection or architectural feature, or any tree, shrub, plant, or turf." There are also restrictions on blocking streets, carrying a firearm or using "loud, threatening, or abusive language" on the grounds with the aim of disrupting the work of Congress. The law also prohibits anyone who is not a member of Congress from appearing on the House or Senate floor without express permission.

    3. What graver charges are possible?

Charges of sedition or insurrection would require proving intent to disrupt or even overthrow the government. (A sedition conviction carries a maximum prison term of 20 years.) During the Black Lives Matter protests in June, Trump issued an executive order stating that his administration would prosecute to the fullest anyone who did harm to federal property, which carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. There also may be prosecutions under the Anti-Riot Act, which makes it a crime to cross state lines with the intent to incite a riot -- or even just encourage another person to riot. The government can also choose to seek prison sentences of up to 5 years for those found guilty of engaging in "civil disorder," by impeding or attempting to impede the actions of law enforcement officers carrying out their official duties.

right,   Comparisons  of crooks in different times and contexts may be misconstrued.   While qualifying the  crimes of Nixon as penny ante -- in comparison with Trump's, so as to underscore difference in degree not kind, allows the unintended interpretation of minimizing the kind and leveling the degree.

In this case, it may be best to let each crook, Nixon and Trump, stand on his own.  Nixon has his own despicable record that in includes, in addition to the more well- studied Watergate scandal, his treasonous sabotage of the Paris Peace talks for his electoral advantage in 1968. And, it went from there.

It's having some very positive effects.  Like the post says, the Trumps are finished politically.  I really believe that.  The list of important republicans who have had it is growing.  Toomey said on FOX he has committed impeachable offenses.  There are many cracks growing now.

Maybe the biggest positive is that the conversation now has really turned to the big lie, the election lie, that started this.  Not only is the lie being exposed and dissected constantly but also the liars.  Republicans are being called out in ways I don't think I have ever seen.

Called out not just for the big lie but 4 years of lies and enabling.  There is constant talk about how if republicans had done the right thing and removed him last year people would be alive who are now dead.

And not just the 5 Wed.  4000 people a day are dying because of Trump.  Many of them, thousands, would be alive today.   And thats part of the discussion too.

And the whole freakin freak show has been exposed to the world.  It has embarrassed many of the right people.  This crazy mostly bloodless coup, it's a miracle only 5 died, has done this in a spectacular way we could never have hoped for giving the new justice department excellent reasons to crush these idiots they simply would not have had without the riot.

... the violence of recent days, and as disturbing as the details are about the complicit behavior of those who swore an oath to defend the Constitution, we will eventually arise stronger for this experience because many more Americans now understand and realize what can be lost in a democracy through citizen apathy and complacency.

We've all heard an awful lot about the villains and bad actors in this shameful event during these past few days. Let's also please take note of a genuine hero, Eugene Goodman, a lone black Capitol police officer armed only with a baton, who purposely antagonized the invading white mob in order to divert their attention away from an open door to the Senate Chambers, which bought senators the critical minutes necessary to escape the vicinity and the mob's wrath. By putting his life on the line, he prevented an already tragic event from escalating into something truly horrific.

Officer Goodman was one of the true exceptions in an otherwise generally mediocre (if not disgraceful) collective performance last Wednesday by Capitol security. He deserves to be the very first recipient of a Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Joe Biden.

Moscow Mitch should go down as a reprehensible senate majority leader. I get the complaints about Schumer but he is light years better than Mitch. And Mitch should probably be stripped of any power. He can sit in the corner with his minority leader title but really having no more power than your average senator in the minority.

The Maricopa County Republican Committee voted Saturday to censure Cindy McCain, calling the longtime Republican a "troubled individual" who has supported "leftist" causes and candidates who run counter to conservative values, the Arizona Republic reports.

They are quite unconcerned about your disapproval and mine.

They see the results on an election in which they did about as well as they have ever done, other than Trump.  We are kidding ourselves to think many many republicans did not look at that riot and see a promising future.

The number of republicans, a majority in the house, who voted to support The Big Lie the day of the riot is as good an example as there could be.   And the fact millions, literally, millions of people are flocking to Parler.  They know what they are switching for.  Undiluted unadulterated White supremacist insurrection.

absolutely have not and I was talking more about when they have to face all the voters in their state. Maybe it won't make a difference for someone like Hawley unless GOP support collapses enough for him but someone like Ted Cruz? 200K or less more votes and he will be former senator. There are a lot of states that are on the edge.

I saw an interview with Rick Wilson and he said basically the same thing you are saying. The GOP has decided to be the white nationalist party. Like you say they did as good under Trump as they have in a long time. He said they reside in a bubble and none of this is a problem for most Republicans.

And Wilson said yeah, it's going to take quite a few elections to be lost before they get the message. He also said for Biden to be a success all he has to do is solve the COVID issue.

Also some interesting points he made was that even if you can't get rid of them at the ballot box you can still make them miserable by going after their corporate donors. Do you think anyone wants to donate to Hawley or Cruz after all this? It would be a PR disaster for their company. Especially with millennials who "vote their values". I really liked this idea because I can call the donors of my rep and complain about them making donations to a treason weasel. He has made that kind of thing so easy now.

We really need to start working on these governor's races and legislatures to get rid of gerrymandering and some of these odious voter laws the GOP has enacted.

Honestly though the voters they have now really don't care about "corporate interests" and probably would be just fine with them being dumped by them since most of them would be considered "globalists" by them anyway.

Now if we can do something in congress about dark money then that will change that.

Since June I have traveled to the Arkansas & Missouri border around 10 times.  The first time I was with some friends and I was blown away with the number and size of Trump flags.  I remember thinking to myself, 'There ain't no way we are going to overcome this kind of devotion.'
    It was a depressing realization.

They are everywhere.  In Texas you see them here & there.  Hardly see any in Oklahoma.  But AR & MO loves them some Trump flags.  Since the election, its been alarming that they aren't coming down. On any given trip, I would see hundreds & hundreds of them including when we drove back last Saturday.

Yesterday we were driving back here and saw exactly one Trump flag.  It was in a tree and if I had to guess, to much work to go up and bring down.  At first I was like, this can't be, no way over a week they all came down.  But after a couple hours that is exactly what happened.

I don't know what it means, but it cannot bode well for the President or his party.

As a side note, I look forward to a day in which I am not reminded nor do I think about Trump.  Not a news story, not a bumper sticker, nothing Trump for a solid day.  The missing flags are a fantastic start.

The US Capitol Police has had to respond to "a couple of incidents" of officers threatening to harm themselves in the wake of the attack on Capitol Hill. This includes a female officer who turned in her own weapon for fear of what might happen, CBS News reports.

A source said the department was demoralized: "There's tremendous moral injury, a sense of failure weighing them down. They went home to family and were asked how did this happen. And it's very easy for those officers to interpret that as `how could you let this happen?'"

Whats to stop Trump from filling the vacancies with his family for a day or just firing them all and filling the seats with his most devoted followers for the vote.

I don't feel like acting members should be participating in the process nor do I think they should be in the line of succession either.  There is a reason for the Senate confirmation requirement.

I think there is a statute defining who runs any given agency in the absence of a Senate-confirmed Secretary, including that someone denied confirmation cannot serve as "acting." (In fact, I think I may have read that a person whose nomination is pending confirmation cannot serve as "acting" secretary. So there must be some sort of legal regulation of this.) I hadn't considered your suggestion of a bad-faith temporary appointment, but I would refer back to my earlier comment, that an interpretation of any constitutional provision that would result in the provision's basic purpose being thwarted cannot be accepted as a correct interpretation.

Also the cops who have sometimes been sympathetic are going to be much less so now that the cops are beating them up.  Cops are their new enemies.  You and I know what it's like for cops to be enemies. Many of these guys do not.

I almost want them to try it.  I've heard the big talk, personally, about how they have the guns and "they" better watch out.

However all the ones I know like their job. A lot. And will do it in a pinch.  Just like the ones getting beaten up on Wed.  Once you get used to giving people orders it's like crack.  Or so I've heard.

Also something I was thinking about, the way that freak show on Wed went likely will make them take all the wrong lessons away from it.  In a way it almost justified the idea they can intimidate the gub'ment with their pushing and shoving.  This experience will not be repeated. They will not find the welcome mat out the next time they come.

Not only that it strikes me that if they had been slightly less concerned with their social media and stealing crap to sell on eBay and a tiny bit more organized they really could have brought the country to it knees.  They really could have.

I don't know if their failure to do that was because the FBI convinced all the heavy hitters to stay home or what.  But they missed their big chance.  I don't think they get another one.

And I think when they turn on the cops the cops, most of them, will turn on them.

I found this by accident last weekend.  It turned up in one of those "people who watched this also liked...."

    It's pretty great.

    Variety

Give HBO's latest drama six hours of your time, and it'll tell you the story of the 21st century.

That's the promise made by "Years and Years," which airs on the cabler starting June 24 after a run on BBC One in the United Kingdom. The first episode begins in May 2019, and subsequent installments push deep into the 2020s, far enough to reveal that our future history looks less like an arc towards progress than a whirlpool of entropy. And though Emma Thompson steals scenes as an ambitious nationalist politician whose brashness and ease with the mechanisms of celebrity could generate comparisons to both Brit Boris Johnson or to at least one familiar American figure, it's not her story. To its credit, "Years and Years" -- among the most emotionally involving, and best, series to air so far this year -- keeps its aperture narrow even as the world keeps forcing its way in. This is, above all, the story of a family, one whose ordinariness makes them a powerful vehicle for telling the future.

    PS
One of the first future blurbs was about Trump winning a second term.  It made me feel really good that we surprised our British friends and did the right thing.

Now that the federal government has expanded the pool of people to people 65 and with people with health concerns, that expansion will just make it more difficult for those 75 and older and essential workers to receive the the vaccine in the near future.

The citizens in my state (none / 0) (#186)
by MO Blue on Thu Jan 14, 2021 at 12:26:54 AM EST
are under increased risk due to the incompetence of my Republican Governor and legislation. To date, their handling of health guidelines and their vaccination rollout has been subpar.
They did not even develop a workable plan to vaccinate healthcare workers in  our state. As stated, they were under the impression that all healthcare workers work in hospitals and had no plan in place to get those outside of the hospital environment vaccinated.

According to the data I referenced, people have been dying at a much higher rate in Missouri than in California over an extended period of time. Average daily cases during one seven day period is a pretty small sample size but evidently California had more cases during that period.

Neither state has the virus under control and the Missouri Governor and the Missouri legislation has been incompetent in handling COVID.

Case rate per 1000 since 1/21/2020

    MO 6,959 (27th highest state)
    CA 6,953 (26th highest state)

Looks like your Republican gov and our Democratic gov are doing an almost identically sh1tty job.

    My Opinion (none / 0) (#193)
by ScottW714 on Thu Jan 14, 2021 at 01:29:14 PM EST
In Texas everyone wears a mask, when we drive to Missouri no one in Oklahoma wears them, Arkansas is mostly wearing, Missouri is about half.  But the one thing that literally shocked me, bars are wide open.  I haven't been able to sit down and watch a game in a bar like normal since early 2020.  Went out before Christmas here in Missouri to catch a game I couldn't get at home.  The bar was packed and I forgot about restrictions, if there are any, until I woke up the next day hung over and was thinking WTF.  I haven't been back since, but I will be the idiot that goes to the bar if there is a game I can't get at home.

Bars should not be opened when Hospitals don't have the beds to treat non-Covid emergencies in my opinion.  That falls squarely on the governor.  I also think mask mandate should be at the federal level, the fact that its not is a huge failure of this administration.

We will never know who can handle a pandemic better, but I do know that D's won't pander to the idiot brigade who thinks the Constitution covers cloth masks.  D's tend to respect the opinions of experts and that their policies would be much more in line with medical professionals than professional politicians.  We do know the federal government's response has been terrible, and I don't think anyone can argue that the total blackout of anything COVID, other than trying to take credit for the vaccine, should be criminal.

Ya, my understanding is that (none / 0) (#194)
by sarcastic unnamed one on Thu Jan 14, 2021 at 01:56:27 PM EST
about 35% of transmissions happen at workplaces, and about another 35% in the home. As far as I'm concerned masks should be mandated in both places.

How would you propose (none / 0) (#197)
by Chuck0 on Thu Jan 14, 2021 at 03:40:58 PM EST
enforcing a mandate in people's homes?

I have barely left my home since the end of Feb. of 2020. My wife does the shopping and not much else. Why should we have to wear masks at home?

That said, we do don masks if the infrequent outsider comes into the house (repairpersons, the rare neighbor).

    I don't propose that it can be enforced. (none / 0) (#198)

I'm in much the same situation as you.

Also, my apologies, my data points above are faulty, I was going off memory of an article I read about a month ago.

In fact, according to contact tracing data released by NY State (such data seems to be hard to find on the interwebs these days) 74% (not 35%) of infections occurred in people's homes.

Household/social gatherings account for 73.84 percent of the spread during the two months that were measured, followed by 7.81 percent from healthcare delivery and 2.02 percent sourced from higher education students.

I would not think being at home with the same people that you live with is not the same as a household/social gathering.  Still a significant and surprising number.

But I'm not wearing a mask at home nor am I inviting people over.  But that's not to say people haven't been over.

    Also suprising is restaurants/bars (none / 0) (#200)
by sarcastic unnamed one on Thu Jan 14, 2021 at 07:16:51 PM EST
    being only 1.4 percent.

Yes, there were bar and restaurant restrictions, in NYC only. The city is about 8.5 million, the whole state is around 19.5 million, so bar and restaurant infection rates outside of NYC were around 2%.

    Correction around 2.5% (none / 0) (#201)

    I keep seeing this commercial

Watch it and imagine the race rolls are reversed.  I think you will see my point.

To be clear, I am not offended.  And I likely would not be even if the races were reversed.  But a whole lot of people definitely would

I guess I just think if words are going to matter they should matter for everyone.  I am bit shocked this commercial with this script was made.

You think if there was a commercial with an adult white man saying "you might wanna clean that up girl"
to an adult black woman, no one would notice?

I kinda think they would and that was the point.

Perhaps I'm sensitive to the point (none / 0) (#173)
by CaptHowdy on Tue Jan 12, 2021 at 09:11:25 PM EST
because once in the `80s living in NY I was chatting with my landlord who was black.  He asked me how I was settling in and I told him I had invited the black girl across the hall over for dinner and we had a nice time.

He said, "that's my daughter.  And actually she is a 28 year old grown woman"

I felt terrible.  My liberal identity was scarred.  I meant nothing by the comment.  It's actually a very gay thing to say.  Partying  with the black girls.

Anyway, ever since then I've been very aware of the perceived slight and I've never done it again.  To any "adult woman".

... too distracted by the stupidity of the whole thing.  Can't call a grown woman girl, well I think a lot of folks haven't gotten that memo.

That being said, if a white dude told a black woman to 'Clean that up girl.' it would be a problem for Progressive.  But that isn't what happened.

I am curious what channel that is on as I haven't seen it yet ?

What I really have a problem with those damn parentamorphosis Progressive commercials because they are starting to land a little too close to home.  I like submarines and I just bought an inspiration sign for our new house.

For the record, it does not saying anything like, No fussin', no cussin', no backtalkin'.  Anyone else notice that Dr. Rick is developing a temper ?

I see it. However the commercial is insulting to women just doubly so if it was a black woman he was calling girl due to the history in this country.

Back in the 80's when I was working in retail I got called "girl" by some customers. Of course I had to keep my mouth shut about it but it infuriated me.
