Another Thanksgiving With COVID Lurking in the Wings

Happy Thanksgiving to all. Personally, I find the media depictions of large and mostly maskless crowds at , at grocery stores, airports and public events concerning. I would have thought by now we all know what comes next - another round of mutating Covid viruses.

Colorado happens to be one of the states with a high number of new COVID cases and increased deaths. [More...]

It'spositivity rate is above 9%. There are only 745 hospital beds left. Many of the recently afflicted are between 5 and 11 years old. 80% of new hospital cases are unvaccinated.

Gov. Polis says he won't be issuing a state-wide mask mandate. The counties are not so feckless. In Denver (county), starting yesterday, it's Vax or Mask. You need a mask at all indoor places, including apartment house common areas.

Public Indoor Spaces include entering, being inside, or moving within the common area of an apartment
building, condominium, or similar residential building, including lobbies, pool areas, elevators, common recreation areas, and in offices or other spaces used
by the public.

For public events, the facility has the option to ensure that 95 % of all employees and invitees are vaxxed. Jefferson, Arapahoe, and Adams counties are also issuing mask or vax mandates.

Globally speaking, say hello to the latest virus mutation, that will likely spread around the world in the next few weeks. More on that here.

Several countries includingGermany, Austria, the Netherlands and Portugal are also imposing restrictions, including partial lockdowns.

I'm as tired as everyone else of living with the threat of COVID all around us. I would welcome another lockdown. Because governments care more for financial health than their citizens' physical health, and politicians are more concerned with being re-elected than they are with protecting their individual constituents, and therefore reluctant to stand up to political pressure brought by mega industries like the airlines another lockdown is highly unlikely.

I do hope that lawmakers everywhere will make it more difficult for the unvaccinated to attend public events and that the courts will uphold vaccine mandates. Perhaps the reality that their livelihoods are on the line will cause those who stubbornly refuse to be vaccinated to open their eyes to reality.

Until we make real progress towards eliminating COVID (not just relegating it to flu status and deciding it's something we have to live with) I can't think of much to give thanks for this Thanksgiving.

That said, how was your day, and if your menu had something special, please tell us about it.

invitations from siblings this year.  Both families include multiple unrepentant anti vaxxers.

    Nope.

If I felt better I would have done something here or in the neighborhood.  But I felt like doing nothing.
I stayed home, made my favorite, spaghetti, and spent the day with great tv.  It's all good.

(but different), here is Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant Multi-Colored Rainbow Roach Affair (A Real Spy-Tingler)." As heard in live performance on WBAI radio, 1968, about a 12-minute version. I heard Arlo perform this variation on the original "Alice's Restaurant Thanksgiving Day Massacree" live in a Greenwich Village basement club in 1967, I think, when I was a senior in high school, or maybe it was 1968. In the club it was definitely 20-30 minutes.

    Who Goes Nazi?

"Germans may be more susceptible to Nazism than most people, but I doubt it. Jews are barred out, but it is an arbitrary ruling. I know lots of Jews who are born Nazis and many others who would heil Hitler tomorrow morning if given a chance. There are Jews who have repudiated their own ancestors in order to become 'Honorary Aryans and Nazis'; there are full-blooded Jews who have enthusiastically entered Hitler's secret service. Nazism has nothing to do with race and nationality. It appeals to a certain type of mind."

That explains former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose own fascist tendencies have been well-chronicled.

That was an interesting read. Thanks.

Stock Futures Drop on Concerns Over New Variant

November 26, 2021 at 8:33 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

"Stocks, oil prices and government-bond yields slumped after South Africa raised the alarm over a fast-spreading strain of the coronavirus, triggering concern that travel restrictions and other curbs will spoil the global economy's recovery," the Wall Street Journal reports.

CNBC: "The downward moves came after WHO officials on Thursday warned of a new Covid-19 variant that's been detected in South Africa. The new variant contains more mutations to the spike protein, the component of the virus that binds to cells, than the highly contagious Delta variant. Because of these mutations, scientists fear it could have increased resistance to vaccines."

New Variant a `Serious Concern' in South Africa

November 26, 2021 at 7:25 am EST By Taegan Goddard 42 Comments

Bloomberg: "Scientists in South Africa are studying a recently identified new coronavirus variant of concern, stoking fears the country may face a potentially severe fourth wave that could spread internationally."

"The new discovery, called B.1.1.529 until a Greek letter is assigned to it by the World Health Organization, carries an unusually large number of mutations and is `clearly very different' from previous incarnations."

BBC: "The latest is the most heavily mutated version discovered so far - and it has such a long list of mutations that it was described by one scientist as `horrific.' while another told me it was the worst variant they'd seen."

New York Times: "Scientists are still unclear on how effective vaccines will be against the new variant flagged by a team in South Africa, which displays mutations that might resist neutralization."

Europe's Surge Could Be `Window Into the Future'

"Global health leaders are urging caution as the holiday season gets underway, pointing to a 23 percent spike in coronavirus cases across the Americas in the past week, a surge that follows spikes in Europe -- which officials warn could be a `window into the future for the Americas,'" the Washington Post reports.

on several counts. WHO probably should have kept the strain nomenclature as B1.1529 for a while longer. The snazzier "Omicron" lends itself to media hysteria before more critical data is known.

South Africa vaccination rates are relatively low (23.8 percent fully vaccinated). And, some of the immunologic protection of the population may be from infection---which may have faded over time. Hence, the issue of Covid vaccine escape will be difficult to nail down in short order.

At this point, a judgment call regarding border closing is about the best option; evaluation of the pros and cons ( disincentives to reporting v reduction in traveler spread).  In my view, its comes down on the side of restrictions on border entries until more is known. Error on the side of safety.  And, my guess, is that the vaccines will continue to hold sway, as with Delta variants. Or, a modification as a booster. Hope I am right.

Of course, the stock market does not like uncertainty--especially modern day stock marketeers, who are high rollers investing their tons of money.  And, the market is now down to the low of 35,000.

    Democrats Roar Back In Georgia

in November there was like 30 or 40 something seats that flipped. Most surprising is S. Ga. & Warner Robins a Republican military base town electing an African American D mayor.

All I can say is maybe central and S. GA. is tired of all the bull promises the GOP has been making for decades while their lives just get worse? I don't know but one can hope. Frankly them figuring it out themselves is the only way they are going to quit voting GOP.
