Tampa Superspreader

Watching the photos and news reports of people celebrating in Tampa after the Superbowl is simply sickening on so many levels.

Obviously, sports is not my field. I wouldn't bother to waste my time writing about it except I happened to see news photos of the [mostly young] maskless fools in Tampa packed next to each other like sardines, yelling and hooting in each other's faces as they celebrated in public after the game.

Shorter version: You just can't fix stupid -- or selfish. COVID takes a holiday for no one, not rock stars, athletes or fans.

Correction: This is an old photo not a photo from yesterday's superbowl of Bon Jovi congratulating Tom Brady after a game. Criticism for his being maskless has been removed, sorry Jon, I'll buy another bottle of Hampton Water to make up for the error (Although I'd really like you to get rid of that glass cork -- it's a disaster on nail polish and really hard to get out of the bottle.)

It is just mind-boggling that so many people have had to postpone important life events like weddings, funerals, holidays with family, but Americans are willing to risk another surge for of all things, a ball game?

Governor Polis and every other governor should immediately impose a 14 day quarrantine for the next two weeks on all incoming air travelers from the state of Florida. The State of Florida is now a huge superspreader and other than keeping it sealed off from other states, there's no way for the rest of us to be safe.

According to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins, the United States has lost more lives -- 460,000 and rising -- to the coronavirus than any other country in the world. More than 27 million people in the U.S. have been infected with the virus, again, more than any other country on the planet and 25% of the world's total number of cases, which now stands at 107 million.

The Superbowl should have been cancelled. Everyone knew it would be a repeat of the super-spreaders that set the country back months on Memorial Day, Labor Day and Thanksgiving and of course, who could forget Sturgis? How spineless are Florida's leaders?

If we really want to get rid of this virus, the country needs to shut down, not open up. Life is a commodity far more precious than money and we need to treat it as such.

be fair to the NFL they did a good job of completing the season, they were a good model for rigorous testing, contract tracing and quarantines. They set good protocols and seemed to put some bite in the sanctions.

There is no way the SB should have been cancelled, watching football has given millions of Americans a sense of normalcy over these dark months. Just because a bunch of yahoos couldn't restrain themselves shouldn't deny the rest of us a little pleasure.

Not to defend Floriduh, but it is likely a party would have broken out in KC had they won. I suppose the fact that the home team won and it was perfect party weather juiced up the party in Tampa but I would wager SB parties all across the country will contribute more to the pandemic then the events in Tampa.

Spineless is to kind a word to describe DeSantis et al, IMO.

to strike a balance. I don't envy those who have to make such decisions state by state.

We are social animals, gatherings large and small are in our very nature and have been for thousands of years. Lord knows I miss them more than I could have ever imagined pre March 2020, the day live music mostly died amongst so many other fun beautiful things that make life worth living.

And while the death toll is scary high, the mortality rate is crazy low...I get why people have a hard time not gathering when it's basically as 99-1 or 98-2 shot Covid will kill you. Not condoning it, but I get it.

If this thing lasts more than another year I might be out there with those flaunting the recommendations and guidelines. Living 6 feet apart all the time just ain't natural. It sucks a bag of d:cks.

...so I have some in each car, some near each door (in hope of reminding myself when exiting), some in the pocket of each coat/jacket.

The mortality rate may be low, but the rate of hospitalization is about 10 times the death rate from Covid-19.   If we exceed the capacity to  provide the needed care, there will be a higher mortality rate.

An even bigger consideration: The more people who get infected, the more chances there are for the virus to mutate.   Some of those mutated strains will be better at contagion, some will be better at killing.

The mutations have been more contagious/less deadly less hospitalizations. At least the UK variant.

    https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/transmission/variant.html

"The United Kingdom (UK) identified a variant called B.1.1.7 with a large number of mutations in the fall of 2020. This variant spreads more easily and quickly than other variants. In January 2021, experts in the UK reported that this variant may be associated with an increased risk of death compared to other variant viruses, but more studies are needed to confirm this finding. It has since been detected in many countries around the world. This variant was first detected in the US at the end of December 2020."

It sure appears that there will be more hospitalizations once the UK variant takes hold in the US.

Must be an old photo. Brady has on a Patriots shirt. He doesn't play for them anymore, correct? So no wonder they aren't wearing masks. However, that doesn't mean they were wearing masks. It's just that this photo proves nothing about it, other than what a loser Jovi is that he can't find a real photo from yesterday.

    Correct. (none / 0) (#4)

That photo is NOT from last night. Brady clearly is wearing a Patriots jersey. It is probably from 2019 when the Patriot won in Atlanta.

For the commercials.  There was a couple of good ones.
this Bruce Springsteen Jeep ad is being discussed a lot

They just mentioned something significant I totally missed.  There are no people.

In a beautiful 120second commercial full of talk about Americans and the dirt Americans walk on etc. not a single American except Bruce.

It was noted this was probably not an accident.   That in the world we live in who do you show to encourage unity.

It's the Super Bowl.  Not the Tonys.

If you show to much multiculturalism some will be unhappy.  If you don't show enough others will be unhappy.  So if you want to make a moving and more importantly effective commercial encouraging unity among people, don't show people.

    Fascinating.

the sense of isolation and the barren imagery could be the opening scene of True Detective Season IV.

The whole thing almost had a Badlands-No Country For Old Men vibe to it.

    Not very optimism inspiring.
