U.S. COVID-19 Deaths Reach 600K

600,000 people with COVID-19 have died in this this country. That is such an appalling number.

The World Health Organization says even people who have had COVID-19 should get vaccinated.

The virus has not gone away. The Delta variant is growing in the U.S. and elsewhere. We don't know if it's more dangerous, just that it's more transmissible. Meaning it's a fast spreader. The CDC has now declared it a "Variant of Concern". It thinks the current vaccines will be mostly effective against the variants, but that sounds more like hope than science. [More...]

I do not believe this country or the states within it will ever order another lockdown. The vaccines are essential for everyone because they protect others as well as themselves. Yet vaccine resistance is still a "thing" in some parts of the country (mostly rural Red states and those in certain professions (prison guards).

There are a lot of people who are not relieved that the vaccines are 90-95% effective because they believe they will be in the 5-10% group whom the vaccines fail to protect. While only 50% of people in the country have been vaccinated, we are being asked to assume everyone without a mask has been vaccinated, including people we don't know in elevators, airports, jails, office buildings etc. Social distancing used to be #3 in importance after washing your hands and masking. Now we're down just to wash your hands.

Our politicians have decided to put the economy over saving lives. The plan now is to learn to live with COVID-19 and its variants as if it's a seasonal flu and hope enough people get vaccinated so that the dangers of becoming super-sick or dying from it is as low as possible. We must now learn to cope with an "acceptable" level of risk of death. Instead of eradication, the U.S. has chosen a policy of accept and try to minimize. We'll see how that works out in the months ahead.

in states with high vaccination rates cases are going down and going up in states with low rates.

I am 100% for forcing people to get vaccinated.  Kids have to be vaccinated to go to school.  Anyone who wants to work in a school or hospital or nursing home should be told get vaccinated or get another job.  The job market is said to be good.

And I absolutely think any business owner should be able to say the same thing to keep their customers safe.  The fact states are passing laws to prevent this is insane.

All that said I have no more f'cks to give about the anti vaxxers.   If they get it it's their own fault.  If they die it's there own fault.  Darwinism in action.

    Every last square inch.

The Mount did an incredible job testing waste water in each dorm every day. Sophomore dorm did end up in quarantined as the year ended. Josh dormed for fall and spring but they had very abbreviated semesters. Only in class one day a week, the rest was done online in their rooms. Both of his roommates were able to get vaccinated as quickly as he did. And they so specifically to keep him safe. Both graduated. It was hard not getting to go their graduation.

Who knew though that the school Josh would choose would deal with a pandemic and be one of the most successful schools in managing the infection. They got two students before they were able to even transmit to anyone else in the fall.

And Josh got allergies this spring, you wouldn't believe everything the clinic gave him. Even an albuterol inhaler. He is beloved there.

    How have you all faired?

Yesterday I went to Publics market and people were staring at me because I had a mask on.  Very few had masks and it's a large market.  The produce section is always crowded and unmasked people are continually leaning over others to grab something.  Scares me.

Our governor, who is a Republican "moderate" (supposedly), has declared the state of emergency over as of July 1.  That's just going to make it harder for businesses to impose mask requirements on staff and customers, even though they can.
I'm sort of wondering what I will do if I'm accosted by some idiot berating me for wearing a mask (I have a bad heart, and am unwilling to take the chance that I'm in the 5-10% for whom the vaccine doesn't work).  I would ignore them, I guess, unless they get in my personal space.  In which case, maybe I'll smack them with my cane.  (Well, not really.)

when I was out walking my usual 4+ miles, a bro with a small butt and lycra racing outfit zoomed by me on his expensive bike--without warning--going 25-30 MPH. This is a paved, public trail used by walkers, bikers, skaters, along both sides of the river (two bridges for crossing), with posted signs all over of 10 MPH maximum speed. He scared the ¢r@p out of me and an older fellow with me who was poking along on his recumbent trike as we went up a slope. We both yelled at him to slow down and warn people! As we proceeded up the hill, here came that speeder again, coming downhill toward us, going even faster. We yelled again. About three minutes later, he whizzed past us again, going up the hill. Xrist on a crutch. The fellow on the trike continued on his way. When I got to the top of the hill, I saw the tiny-butted prick ≈150m away at the base of the slope, turning around at a mile-marker post, and coming in my direction again. I saw what he was doing: Trying to go up and down hills as fast as he could. Since I had time, I pulled out the trekking pole I carry on my little pack (to encourage snakes off the trail so they don't get run over, or killed by freaked-out dimwits). I extended the pole and was waiting for him. As he streaked passed, I whacked his rear wheel as hard as I could. The bike wobbled and he almost fell off. He turned his head, without stopping and yelled out, "Crazy bitch!" I returned a yell, "Fü¢king a$$hole!" I carry that moniker with pride.

Trekking poles. The Swiss Army Knife for geezers.

Masks were mandatory for all, even though I would venture to guess that 90+% were vaccinated. Nearly All COVID-19 Deaths Are Among the Unvaccinated

June 24, 2021 at 5:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 68 Comments

Associated Press: "Nearly all COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. now are in people who weren't vaccinated, a staggering demonstration of how effective the shots have been and an indication that deaths per day -- now down to under 300 -- could be practically zero if everyone eligible got the vaccine."

"Breakthrough infections in fully vaccinated people accounted for fewer than 1,200 of more than 853,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations. That's about 0.1%."

But early research indicates that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is somewhat less effective than Pfizer and Moderna.

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former Food and Drug Administration commissioner said the Johnson & Johnson vaccine appears to be about 60% effective against the delta variant, while the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are about 88% effective after the second dose.
