Andrew Cuomo Resigns

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo resigned today.

Five months ago, I opined he would not and should not resign.

....Stripping someone of their job before they have been found guilty of a crime, based on disputed factual allegations, is simply unacceptable. This is not Alice in Wonderland ("No, no said the Queen. First the punishment, then the verdict").

There are thousands if not millions of Andrew Cuomos out there -- men over 50 who are or were in positions of power in business or government who are as sexist as the day is long. Educate them, privately. Write them a letter and tell them how they made you feel. Ask them to acknowledge and validate your feelings according to today's norms, even if these norms did not exist when the event happened. If your goal is to end sexual harassment in the workplace, rather than to get 15 minutes of fame, reap a financial benefit or get personal revenge, this should suffice.

Is there anyone who believes Andrew Cuomo will continue acting and speaking to women in a way they find objectionable after what he's been put through the past few weeks? I doubt it. ...Men learn. Educate them, don't shame them and take away their livelihood over a few inappropriate comments or a non-sexual touch you believed had a sexual overtone.

Back to today: I think he had no choice but to resign -- not so much because of the allegations against him, but because the groundswell against him had become too much. He would get nothing passed between now and the end of his term. He's been rendered politically impotent. That makes his resignation the only ethical thing to do.

One last thing: While personally, I could care less what Joe Biden thinks on any topic, it's unfortunate he used his bully pulpit to opine Cuomo should resign. Biden's opinion is way outside the scope of his duties. And he should have known expressing it publicly would make it headline fodder.

Cuomo will come out okay in the end. He and his brother come from a wealthy and connected family. He can afford to be unemployed for a while. The hardest thing for him may be having to sit outside of the action for a while, since he clearly enjoyed his time in the public eye during his daily COVID-19 news conferences. (I liked his press conferences too, and the back and forth between him and his brother on CNN).

Another trial by media, another premature verdict of guilt. One thing we've all learned from this is no allegation is too old, and "My Generation" does not work as a defense.

to the NYC area are very interested in getting the iconic Tappan Zee Bridge renamed back to the Tappan Zee Bridge after Ex-Gov. Andrew changed its name in 2017 to the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge after his daddy.

Ask them [older male gropers] to acknowledge and validate your feelings according to today's norms, even if these norms did not exist when the event happened.

Ex-Gov Cuomo is only 5 years older than me. I'm sorry, those norms absolutely 100% did exist when the event(s) happened.

I liked the idea of renaming the Tappan Zee (5.00 / 1) (#8)

Despite Pete's son Dan being a good friend of mine I'd prefer the original "Tappan Zee."
It derives its name from the Tappan Native American sub-tribe of the Delaware/Lenni Lenape, and the Dutch word zee, meaning a sea.[3]

Not because of anything related to Cuomo.  It's just the name the old bridge had for so long.  Then again, I still refer to the DC airport as "National" rather than Reagan.

But no one I know had stopped calling it The Tap, or the Triboro the Triboro (renamed after Koch). Tappan Zee is a pretty cool name for a bridge.

The only semi-recent major renaming that seems to have stuck is the Jackie Rob (formerly Interboro) Pkwy. Maybe because Jackie Robinson was a truly historic and beloved person, and Cuomo or Koch not so much.

At least we don't have to worry about anything being renamed after f*ckin' Rudy Guiliani lol.

Its not the findings in the report: he physically harassed/assaulted employees; he created a toxic/abusive work environment; or that he and his office illegally retaliated against an individual, but its that he is "politically impotent" (Cuomo being Cuomo would tell, if not show, you exactly how virile he is) is the reason he needed to resign.

To advise victims that their best course of action is not to report harassment to their supervisor, or HR department, or follow the policies laid out by their employer to report incidents of harassment, but instead write a letter to the harasser and explain how he/she made you uncomfortable boarders on ludicrous.

"Is there anyone who believes Andrew Cuomo will continue acting and speaking to women in a way they find objectionable after what he's been put through the past few weeks?" The answer is yes, because he's a privileged, sanctimonious, narcists who will always have people around him who will go to any lengths, including breaking the law, to protect him.

I'm a 50 year old male. So if I'm not included in his generation, then I'm not far removed.
I can tell you that his behavior has never been acceptable in any work environment that I have been a part of.

I predicted to my cousin that Cuomo wouldn't last out the month. I guess with his 14 day transition period, I was mostly right.

resigning is not, in any way/shape/form, being stripped of your job. Cuomo was no more stripped of his job, than Al Franken was of his. they both voluntarily resigned, choosing, of their own accord, to not go through due process. that was their decision, and no one else's. they also have only themselves to blame for their circumstances.

as to Biden's opinion on the matter, again, you're wrong. as the leader of the Democratic Party, he has a responsibility to do what he can, to keep it from becoming the Republican Party. part of that is pointing out what isn't considered acceptable behaviour, especially for Democratic office holders and party officials. what you think of his opinion is, bluntly, irrelevant, just as what I think of it is. what does matter, is that the public is made aware, of the basic moral expectations, of public representatives of the party, and that there are demonstrable penalties for violating them.

publicly-stated belief that Governor Cuomo resign was a follow-up to his statement last March that he believed Cuomo should resign if New York's Democratic Attorney General Letitia James' investigation substantiated the allegations made by several women.

That investigation found Cuomo sexually harassed multiple women, current and former state employees as well as a number of women outside of government. Investigators reported unwelcome and non-consensual touching and suggestive comments of a sexual nature.

The call to resign by the Democratic president and other Democratic leaders was neither a charge of felony nor a suit for civil recompense. It was the acknowledgement of the investigation's findings that the governor's conduct created a hostile work environment for women and that such conduct deserves the loss of political support. The penalty called for, therefore, is not prison or monetary settlement, but the loss of a nice job. The issue is the continued fitness for office, a political assessment, not necessarily one that needs to await criminal or civil resolution.

Elected officials who abuse their power or are grossly incompetent or recklessly negligent, ranging from the conduct of Cuomo to that of DeSantis, and of course, the former guy, deserve to lose their political base and be asked to resign prior to the completion of their elected term of office. The conduct may or may not be subject to the criminal justice system or to civil action--that is another matter and for another jurisdiction.

The Democratic leadership, starting with the President of the United States, has lived up to that obligation.

... Andrew Cuomo and Donald Trump share one increasingly unacceptable social trait: They're both bullies. And that propensity to bully others, more than anything, is what ultimately brought Cuomo down. He was long respected and feared in public for ability and willingness to wield political power but in private, he was loathed and disdained even by his political allies for his arrogance and general a$$holery.

So not surprisingly, when the governor finally tripped over his own hubris and showed serious vulnerability in the final few months, it was quickly knives out for New York Democrats. Acting on the premise that if you're going against the king, you better get the king, they got the king. If you think about it, it's been a rather spectacular and relatively swift fall from grace for His Graciousness -- which is, admittedly, a pretty low bar for grace but that's another subject for another time.

Let's remember that only 17 months ago, after apparently being mesmerized by his performance art during the first wave of the COVID pandemic in the northeastern U.S., a not-insignificant number of fairly prominent people in both politics and the media were touting Cuomo as a potential Democratic presidential nominee. Today, mired in scandal and shunned by his own party, he's slinking out of Albany by the back door.

    Aloha.
