A major snow storm on May 20? We've got one here. From the National Weather Service:

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE National Weather Service Denver CO
650 PM MDT Fri May 20 2022

...LATE SPRING STORM TO BRING HEAVY SNOW TO THE MOUNTAINS, FOOTHILLS, AND FRONT RANGE URBAN CORRIDOR...

Heavy snow will continue to spread south across the mountains and foothills this afternoon and early evening. The heavy snow will accumulate on trees, causing some tree limbs to break and produce scattered power outages. Do not park under trees and avoid walking under snow laden trees.

....Consider altering your travel plans. Heavy snowfall is expected to make travel very difficult to impossible.

The snow has been coming down fast and furious since 1:00 p.m. At least it isn't sticking near Downtown yet. Although it will soon turn to sleet, and that's bad for driving.

I hope the weather is more cooperative in your neck of the woods.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

Roberts is going to kill the deal.  What an earthquake in wingnut world if he does.  All those state legislatures scratching and clawing to pass insane and punitive laws are going to be so  embarrassed.

Clarence Thomas calls out John Roberts as Supreme Court edges closer to overturning Roe v. Wade

Thomas' blunt remarks suggest new antagonism toward Roberts and added to the uncertainty regarding the ultimate ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, expected by the end of June.

Roberts, with his institutionalist approach, is positioned as the one justice who might generate a compromise opinion that stops short of completely overturning Roe v. Wade, at least this year. That would thwart an outcome that Thomas has worked toward for decades.

they really have backed themselves into a corner on this. Now no matter what they do they have activated millions of women against conservatives because even if they don't overturn Roe now we know that they will do it at some point. And yeah, if I were a conservative I would just give up because if after 1/2 a century and a 6-3 court Roe is not overturned there's no guarantee that it will be overturned in their lifetime.

And that they can cripple Roe without killing it and their reputation.

Get a 6/3 for some kind of compromise.

I personally believe there's more at stake here than Roe v Wade and I would guess Roberts thinks so too.

Yes, overturning a landmark decision that has been scrutinized  and affirmed for  almost 50 years,  defines rights that impact half the population,  is relied upon and popular among Americans is not a step to be powered through on the basis of embarrassingly weak legal reeds so as to yield political or religious outcomes.

.  Moreover, jettisoning precedent based upon underpinnings also foundational to  interpretation of other constitutional rights is a concern for the Court as a reliable and responsible institution.

She believed, it appeared, that restricting access to abortion on the basis of violation of privacy rights was not as effective as protecting the right to abortion on the basis that restricting abortion access impeded gender equality.

And, the better approach, therefore, would be  under the equal protection clause.  This, she believed, would make the ruling less vulnerable to attack---and, now, likely being overturned.

It seems to me that Justice Ginsburg's skepticism of Roe was not grounded in disapproval of abortion rights, but by a commitment to its importance.  However, it is also my view, that Justice Ginsburg was naive to believe a different argument would would shield Roe from political and Christo-fascist determination to keep women "barefoot and pregnant".

However, D-5's rural territory shifted - so Schrader was a "new" candidate to a lot of voters. His ad campaign faced a dilemma - how does he tell Dems that he's one of them, while simultaneously letting people know how much he worked to water-down the effects of various Dem-supported bills?

Yes, the new D-5 might elect a Republican. In that district, significantly more Republicans voted in the primary than did Democrats.

Late on Friday night, we learned that cryptocurrency billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried had donated $6 million to the House Majority PAC on April 4, just days before HMP began spending $1 million to boost first-time candidate Carrick Flynn in the Democratic primary for Oregon's brand-new 6th Congressional District.

The poor woman who falls down the stairs and miscarries but can't prove it was unintentional. And the law here would put doctors in jail for not reporting a miscarriage. More Ginni. (5.00 / 2) (#20)
by KeysDan on Sat May 21, 2022 at 12:56:35 PM EST
After the 2000 election Ginni Thomas lobbied Arizona Speaker of the House, Russell Bowers, and State Rep. Shawna Bolick, to set aside Biden's popular victory and chose " a clean slate of electors", according to two rounds of emails.

Ms. Bolick, who is now running for Arizona Sec. of State on a platform "to restore election integrity" thanked Ginni for reaching out, writing "hope you and Clarence are doing great." Shawna's husband, Clint, once worked with Clarence Thomas and now sits on the Arizona Supreme Court.

Gini's efforts in Arizona were part of a broader and integral role played with top Trump officials, including Mark Meadows and Jared, so as to get state legislators to send bogus slates of electors in the scheme to overthrow the duly elected government.

In the Court case of the John Eastman (a former clerk of Clarence Thomas) subpoena of the "coup memo", federal judge Carter described this scheme as a criminal conspiracy to interfere with Congressional action and to defraud the American people.   Gini was involved in a parallel effort to get Arizona to improperly cast aside the vote results.

The Supreme Court, comprised of just nine, un-elected members, has, essentially, veto power over the president of the United States and the rest of the executive branch as well as veto power over the Congress.  Article Three of the Constitution provides great authority and responsibility to the Supreme Court.

While spouses of all elected officials need to be cognizant of not only conflicts of interest, it is imperative to the nature of the Supreme Court that spouses (as well as the justices themselves) avoid or have no conflicts.

In my view, spouses of S.C. justices forfeit their own independent career pathways, and without question-- political activism that trades on the justice's position and influence.  If that is too much to ask, then both Justice and spouse need to find another line of work.

In Clarence's case, Gini being part of a gang to overthrow the government, requires Clarence to  do more than have an ethical compass for conflicts, but to resign.

Justice Thomas, as recently as last week, has remained defiant amid questions about his impartiality. And, he lambasted protests in front of SC justice's homes, although he appears at political events hosted by advocates hoping to sway the Court.

What began as an administrative review of the origins of the investigation into Trump and Russia connections morphed into a Special Counsel appointment and a criminal investigation.   Barr , it appears, wanted to saddle the Biden Administration with Durham in the event that Trump lost the election.

Garland could have ended it all, but he wisely let it play out despite (or because of)  the flimsy legal foundations.  And, of course, anticipating the fascists firestorm if he did.  Durham was happy to go along for the nice ride.

It is interesting that what appears to be among key pieces of evidence that persuaded the jury that Sussman was not lying when he said he was not representing the Clinton-campaign was that Sussman did not bill the Clinton-campaign for the taxi ride to the FBI Headquarters for the meeting.  The jury asked for that evidence during their deliberations.  Seems that detail was an easy one to understand and place in perspective.

He did not bill the Hillary campaign, or any client.  This was consistent with him not taking the meeting with the FBI on behalf of the Hillary campaign.  He acted independently.

Seemingly trivial detail, but the jury found it material, apparently.

    incredible transition (1.00 / 3) (#74)
by Abdul Abulbul Amir on Tue May 24, 2022 at 12:12:04 PM EST
The high gas prices are in Biden's words part of his " incredible transition."

For the rest of us mere mortals a transition involves having the transition end state ready and waiting.  Biden's transition is like jumping out of an airplane at 30,000 feet with a plan to invent, fabricate and deploy a parachute before hitting the ground.

Transitions take time. Biden's energy policy, the "incredible transition" has resulted in Diesel fuel up 75% in the last two years.

Right now virtually every farm tractor and harvester, truck tractor, and rail locomotive run on Diesel. What's the plan to transition these vital components to another fuel?  Nothing, nada, zip.

Nearly the same with aircraft. No plan to wean them from fossil fuel.

Biden talked about making military vehicles electric.  Since Diesel has better that 20X the energy density of lithium batteries, what was a unit of battle tanks with a fuel truck will have the fuel truck replaced with twenty or so flat bed trucks hauling huge batteries. Or maybe the plan is to have the fuel truck tow a generator and burn Diesel to take a few hours to recharge the tanks.

Further this incompetence fuels inflation. Inflation is always and everywhere too much money chasing too few goods.  The M2 money supply is up over 40% in the last two years!!! That is a lot of money.  Reducing US energy production from independence and a net exporter to a net importer is definitely fewer goods.

    ... on a single post?

    1.  Biden didn't reduce US energy production.
    2.  M2 money supply.  The sharp increase in money supply actually goes back a little more than 2 years ago to Feb./Mar. 2020 and has decreased since then.  Can you guess who was POTUS back then?

we are just beginning to receive the first of the Saharan sand.  This year it is hitting the Caribbean islands first and sweeping up between Cuba and Mexico into the Gulf on its way to those states, and as far as Kansas.  Both the storms and the dust are blowing off Africa close to the equator, but when they move a few degrees north we start getting the dust and then the hurricanes.  The high winds aloft cause wind shear that destroys the early hurricanes, but the heavier dust comes rolling across the Atlantic to us.  It's not uncommon for some of the Caribbean islands to get over a half inch of dust every day.  Even with new weather stripping my house gets dusty.  It's also bad for people with asthma and COPD.

    'Megadrought' Threatens Millions in U.S.
May 22, 2022 at 8:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 72 Comments

Financial Times: "The `megadrought' gripping the southwestern US has driven water levels at the two largest reservoirs to record lows, forcing unprecedented government intervention to protect water and power supplies across seven states"

"Millions of Americans already contending with critical water shortages now face the prospect of black outs as energy demand grows during heatwaves just as hydroelectric power supply is strained. A US power regulator this week warned that a big swath of the US was at risk of blackouts, partly as a result of drought conditions curtailing hydroelectric supplies."

"US government climate scientists have said more than half the country is enduring drought conditions, while a separate study estimated that the drought affecting southwestern states was the worst to hit the region for 1,200 years after being exacerbated by human activity."

He talked like that all the time in public. And today, Australian voters decided that they've heard and seen enough. They transformed their country's political landscape by ousting Scott Morrison's Liberal-Nationalist coalition government in favor of one led by Labor Leader Anthony Albanese, who will be sworn in as prime minister on Monday. (In Australia, the Liberal Party is a conservative party and aligns politically with the Nationalists.)

Tonight's Labor victory in Australia represents the most profound political realignment in that country since the 1970s and ended a decade of conservative rule. Current projections give Labor about 83 or 84 seats in the 151-seat House of Representatives. But the big winner appears to be the environmental movement as voters roundly rejected Scott Morrison's anti-climate policies. The Labor-allied Australian Greens party made impressive gains, particularly in Queensland (Brisbane) and South Australia (Adelaide).

Australia has endured significant climate-related problems caused by global warming. Voters, particularly in the cities and suburban communities, got tired of hearing Morrison telling them otherwise. His party was routed tonight, and he announced afterward that he's stepping down as Liberal Party Leader although it's unclear at present who will take his place because his No. 2 guy in the House, Deputy Leader Josh Frydenberg, lost his own re-election bid and will not be in Parliament.

So, it's welcome political news for progressives tonight.

It was not immediately clear how sweeping the reach of the circuit court's ruling will be because a formal opinion from the panel is still forthcoming. But it could have a serious impact on the Senate race. Oz and McCormick were separated by about 1,100 votes as of Friday afternoon, and the ruling could introduce into the pool an as-yet-unknown number of similarly-situated ballots that would not have initially been counted.

If this means Oz loses Trump will freak.  He will singlehandedly destroy any chance of republicans wining that race.

I liked it until the trial was over, and then I thought it went a little haywire. I didn't like the casting of the ex-wives or daughter. They were all boring. Actually, the only actors I liked were the lawyer and his driver.

I do think they had good legal advisors in terms of accuracy as to evidence rules and jury trials. Even the objections and court rulings on them were pretty spot on, as was the star's continual observations to his driver about how the legal system works and his instructions to his client.

In many respects, the series reminds me of "Winter's Bone", also set in the Ozarks - a wonderfully crafted thriller with a very disturbing storyline about matters people didn't talk about for a reason because as Dale Dickey (who played Bump's protective wife Merab in the film) says matter-of-factly: "Nope - talkin' causes witnesses."

I felt like I knew a lot of those people.

I was reading about how that was done...

Because the movie is set among the mountain people of the Ozarks, a culture that is mostly unknown to many of us, Granik and her crew spent two years in the region to learn and absorb the local history and way of life.

Granik said her Ozarks lesson began with a guided tour by the author Daniel Woodrell of the local creeks, quarries and caves that inspired his novel. Being a native of the area, he also recommended a few books and historians to help Granik with her project.

Last season, one of the episodes had a cold open that fast forwarded to post-"Breaking Bad" time in Nebraska in which Jimmy McGill is now a Cinnabons manager named Gene, the faux identity Saul Goodman assumed after having fled Albuquerque in the wake of the Walter White fiasco.

Then, the prior episode before last night had Kim Wexler as a child of an alcoholic mother in Nebraska. In my scenario, the now-adult Kim flees Albuquerque after being falsely fingered for the murder of Howard and returns to familiar ground in her home state, where she and Jimmy / Saul / Gene are eventually reunited post-"Breaking Bad" and live happily ever after - under assumed names, of course.

Honestly, I don't know what will happen to Kim. Lalo could very well kill her next episode. But if she does live through this, I think her headlong flight from New Mexico back to Nebraska is the most plausible scenario.

    Allow me to explain.

In broad strokes, there are three main sources of water for SoCal, which is essentially the width of CA from the LA area to the north down to the Mexican border.

As depicted in Chinatown, the LADWP gets Owens River water from the east side of the northern Sierra.

LADWP mainly supplies water only for the City of LA and the eastern side of the San Fernando Valley, and sells it directly to the consumer.

Metropolitan MWD basically supplies everyone else in SoCal.

Met gets its water from CO to the east via their Colorado River Aqueduct, and also from the west side of the northern Sierra via the State Water Project, and they sell it to retail water agencies who then sell it to the consumer.

Met's CO River water pipes do not connect with its SWP water pipes. It, essentially, now, has two independent water systems.

Colorado, the eastern Sierra, and the western Sierra, all had significantly different snow packs, thus the consumers have different water restrictions based on where their water originates.

Additionally, most, but not all, retail water agencies have supplemental local water sources like surface water, ground water, desalination, etc., which enables them to enact water restrictions specific to their customers.

Appeals court rules insurrectionists can be barred from political office

A federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday that those who engaged in an insurrection could be barred from running for office in the future. The decision comes from a challenge to Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC), who lost his election just a week ago.
    ...
"To ask such a question is nearly to answer it," the court filing said. "Consistent with the statutory text and context, we hold that the 1872 Amnesty Act removed the Fourteenth Amendment's eligibility bar only for those whose constitutionally wrongful acts occurred before its enactment. Accordingly, we reverse the district court's grant of injunctive relief and remand for further proceedings."

The court of appeals ruled only that a statutory amnesty passed for the benefit of Confederate soldiers after the Civil War did not prospectively excuse any and all future insurrectionists from the impact of section 3 of the 14th Amendment. It did not decide any other questions.

Anaheim mayor resigns amid corruption probe into his role in Angel Stadium land sale - "Two prominent Orange County political leaders resigned within 24 hours of each other amid fallout from a sprawling federal public corruption investigation linked to the proposed sale of Angel Stadium and allegations that a secretive 'cabal' controlled Anaheim's politics."

It should really come as no surprise to longtime observers of Orange County, CA politics that the shady-looking deal that Anaheim city officials and select businessmen brokered with Los Angeles Angels owner Art Moreno for the sale of the valuable city-owned Angel Stadium property to the Major League Baseball franchise turned out to be exactly that -- shady.

Anaheim Mayor Harry Sidhu, who's a Republican, has resigned his office after he was accused of bribery, fraud, obstruction of justice and witness tampering in a sprawling federal public corruption investigation linked to the city's proposed sale of Angel Stadium.

And lest Democrats chortle too loudly, it should be noted that his resignation comes 24 hours after Melahat Rafiei, who was likewise swept up in the burgeoning scandal, announced she was stepping down as a member of the Democratic National Committee and secretary of the California Democratic Party.

It's lookin' pretty ugly at the Big A when the team's otherwise stellar play on the field this season is being overshadowed by the corrupt shenanigans of their owner and various public officials.

How did that work out? 19 children and two teachers are dead.

Armed School Resource Office at School Where 21 People Were Killed

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Erick Estrada said. Investigators have not revealed how the suspect entered the school, but Estrada did say two Uvalde police officers and a school resource officer fired at him, but the suspect "had a rifle and body armor on," and was able to keep going.

Can armed officers reduce injury and death

The researchers looked at every identified case of either at least 1 person being intentionally shot in a school building during a school day or a person who went to a school with the intent of indiscriminately firing a gun from 1980 to 2019, using the public K-12 School Shooting Database.
    ...
When controlling for factors of location and school characteristics, the rate of death was 2.83 times more in schools that had the presence of an armed guard (incidence rate ratio, 2.96; 95% CI  1.43-6.13; P  .003).

The investigators concluded that there was no link between violence deterrence and the presence of an armed officer. In fact, an armed officer was the number one factor linked to increased casualties following the perpetrators' use of assault rifles of submachine guns. The fact that research indicates that a number of school shooters are actively suicidal and intend to die during the shooting, could mean that armed officers could be seen as an incentive for a shooter, rather than the deterrent.

New research finds armed officers increases likelihood of mortality at school shootings

On the sub machine gun part. Sounds like it might not be verbiage from actual study. A little sloppy on my part since it is a reputable study.  My second link quotes Professor Peterson and would have been a better source. From second link:

The research looked at 133 shootings where one or more people were intentionally shot in a school building or where someone came to school armed with the intent of firing indiscriminately. The study found that there were three times as many people killed when there was an officer on the scene who was armed.
    ...
But Peterson said she has a few theories.

"If you're actively suicidal that could actually not be a deterrent to you it might even be an incentive," she said. "We also know if perpetrators are going into a school where they know there is an armed officer they might do things like bring more weapons or have more of a plan. "

From the data, the school with the most deaths was Sandy Hook (the range was 0-27), but we can't say if an armed officer there might not have prevented some of those deaths.  Out of 133 cases only 29 schools had armed guards. The mean number of deaths without guards was 1.34 but with guards it was 2.07. Perhaps the extra death was the shooter who didn't commit suicide but was killed? We can't know from this study. It is difficult to reach conclusions from statistics alone, and there are so few cases to draw upon, not to mention the number of variables to consider.

In addition, three local officers were injured in the shooting and a Zavala County deputy had his weapon malfunction.

Not only did the armed school officer not prevent the killings, please think about what could have happened to an armed teacher. at the expense of funding teachers, psychologists, councilors, social workers or nurses.

There are trained professionals and organizations that can provide the right kind of support for individual students. However, there is not nearly enough of this support to meet the need in schools. While the number of on-campus officers has grown exponentially, 90 percent of students attend schools where the number of counselors, social workers, nurses, and psychologists do not meet the recommended professional standards.[12] The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) recommends a student to counselor ratio of 250:1. However, most states fall woefully short of meeting this need -- including Washington, where  public schools have a 482:1 ratio of students to counselors, according to the ASCA. Equally concerning is the fact that schools across the country lack these resources while maintaining a police presence in their halls.

1.7 million students attend schools with police but no counselors
3 million students attend schools with police but no school nurse
6 million students attend schools with police but no psychologist

I don't know about Uvalde but in our area they continue to cut guidance councilors in the schools that need them the most.

1 . No accounting for student body size. The greater that number, the longer the response time.

    1. No accounting for in the building or in the school yard.  The ability of a resource officer to intervene will be different.

    2. "Data were merged and differences were resolved via consensus."  Make of that what you will.  The data were contradictory requiring a merge. The biases of the consensus makers are undisclosed.

    3. Most amazingly there is no indication if the resource officer stopped the shooter!!

    4. "An armed guard was on scene in 23.58% of shootings (29 of 123)."  "On the scene" appears to be undefined.

One thing is apparent in the recent Texas shooting, it took someone with a gun to stop the shooter.

We know from Israeli experience that armed school staff effectively put an end to armed school intruders.

"We know" no such thing, because it's a laughable NRA lie that only the most gullible Faux News rubes would fail to check.  Teachers are not armed in Israeli schools.

Searching this list kept by the Israel Ministory of Foreign Affairs of "Palestinian terror and incitement" since September 2000, another shooting happened in 2002 when three yeshiva high school students were killed at their Orthodox school by a Palestinian gunman before he was shot dead by a security guard -- not a teacher.

That's because, by policy, teachers are not armed in Israeli schools, the Washington Post reported in February 2018.

"Professionals deal with security," the Post quotes Amos Shavit, a spokesman for Israel's Ministry of Education, as saying. "Not the teachers."
    ...

Israeli security experts also say gun violence is rare there because privately held guns are so rare, the Post story says. It quotes Simon Perry, a criminologist at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, saying there is little opportunity for someone to carry out a gun attack inside a school. Though most people in Israel go into the military and receive some weapons training, he said, "it is very, very hard to obtain a weapon in Israel."

If you construct your study to ignore instances of resource officers stopping the shooter before  he inflicts any fatalities it is worthless for determining resource officer affect on fatalities. It is BS, mule muffins, road apples, pidgin poo poo.

If you ignore zero fatalities, the average number of fatalities will be higher.  Since that was done on purpose, the motive for doing the study, leaving out best case instances for resource officers, is suspect to say the least.

A special tactical team in each and every school, since evidently that is what is needed. The armed resource officer did not protect the children at Robb Elementary. The well funded police force in Uvalde did not  protect the children at Robb Elementary. They f**king retreated and waited for the tactical team to arrive some 40 to 60 minutes later.

Israel example is the number of guns in Israel vs the number in the US and the gun controls in Israel.

The US ranks #1 as the country with highest number of civilian guns per hundred persons with 120.5. Israel ranks #108 with 6.7. Civilians in the US have 113.8 more guns per person than Israel.

    GUN CONTROLS IN ISRAEL

While many Israelis have weapons, they are not available to everyone and anyone. To receive a gun license, one must meet several criteria. First, an individual must live or work in a geographic area deemed to pose a higher terror risk, such as Israeli citizens living in Judea and Samaria or close to Arab villages with a history of producing terrorists.

Next, a doctor, usually a general practitioner who has been treating an individual for many years, must complete a detailed health evaluation certifying that the applicant is both physically capable and mentally stable enough to carry a weapon. An applicant also needs to complete a shooting course with a certified instructor and demonstrate sufficient mastery of handling and shooting a weapon. Before a license is granted, a detailed security check is performed on applicants by Israeli authorities.

Once granted, a license then permits an individual to own and carry a single handgun, and the specific weapon purchased by the gun owner is embedded in the license. Only the licensee may use that specific pistol. If the individual wishes to change handguns, the license must be amended. Furthermore, the license permits the gun owner to store a maximum of 50 bullets at any given time. A licensed owner may carry a weapon exposed (open carry) or concealed without limitation.

The license must be renewed every two years and requires periodic shooting instruction and proof of proficiency. Anyone carrying a weapon must be able to present their license at any time.

Private citizens are not allowed to own assault weapons, which are only carried by military personnel with army-issued weapons and ammunition.

the entire police force armed with substantial firepower and body armor were afraid to confront one untrained 18-year with an AR-15 style firearm should be definitive evidence that access to that weapon should be highly restrictive or prohibited.

If at least 19 police officers are collectively too scared to confront a teenager who is killing little fourth-graders because of the weapon he has, that weapon should be illegal. The Scalia majority opinion in Heller, as curious as it is, retains the right to ban classes of weapons.  Of course, Scalia pretty much had to, or the Second Amendment May  also, in keeping with the ruling,  permit bazookas and nukes.

The Republicans. It seems, know, but cannot acknowledge, that more police, more prison-like defenses, and more something are just more failed solutions to the problem.  Tragedies, such as Uvade, have Republicans scrambling for new and improved solutions such as Ted Cruz's "one door, fire marshal be damned policy". Citing unique instances or special but non-applicable circumstances is another old canard.

All being distractions so as to bide time until the media moves on to the next story--such as some movie star's new and fabulous diet. Or,  of course, the "too soon" or "don't politicize" this problem that is caused by Republican politicians.

Active shooter training session 2 months ago (none / 0) (#166)

    training manual
The Uvalde training session 2 months ago relied on guidelines that give explicit expectations for officers responding to an active shooter.

The training is clear: Time is of the essence. The "first priority is to move in and confront the attacker."
    ...
Time is the number one enemy during active shooter response. The short duration and high casualty rates produced by these events requires immediate response to reduce the loss of life. In many cases that immediate response means a single (solo) officer response until such times as other forces can arrive. The best hope that innocent victims have is that officers immediately move into action to isolate, distract or neutralize the threat, even if means one officer acting alone.

Of the children at Sandy Hook, Robb Elementary and numerous others. All the dead children are proof how completely ineffective armed people at the schools are.

Children at Robb were on the phone begging the police to save them. The police were armed and they did absolutely nothing.

Maybe you missed the statement, that citizens in Israel are not permitted to purchase AR type weapons and are only allowed to possess 50 rounds of ammunition.

I'm done with you, your lies and distortions. Anyone who values weapons capable of slaughtering a lot people in a matter of minutes above the life of children is IMO beneath contempt.

I am afraid your posts are tiresome and argumentative and add nothing to the discours. Aside from finding a random youtube of a shooting range, if you were really interested in Israeli firearms laws you might have googled (!) the Israeli government site

The type of firearm and number of bullets that a licensed firearm holder is permitted to purchase is limited, depending on the type of license - in most cases the weapon allowed is a pistol with a limit of 50 bullets. A license is granted for a specific firearm and any additional firearm requires an additional license. An individual who wishes to carry a personal firearm must meet all of the preconditions and adhere to at least one eligibility criterion.

exemption for a licensed shooting range.

Your posts are not a display of ignorance, they are willful misinformation. But thank you for your contribution to reasoned debate /s

allowing any adult to fire 100s of rounds of ammunition using an AR type of weapon in a fully licensed firing range where the guns and ammunition are securely maintained on site. This of course would be implemented after adopting Israel's ban on private ownership of such weapons and only allowing one gun and 50 bullets per person.

I couldn't care less what the guys want to do at a firing range.  It's funny, they'll periodically cite gun ownership stats or gun laws from other countries in an attempt to show that more guns/less gun control laws is somehow beneficial.  "We should be like Switzerland ... or Israel!"  Absolutely we should!  I'd be fine with adopting laws like they have in Switzerland or Israel, as long as we adopt the actual laws and not just the tiny section the gun nuts like.  High ownership rates like Switzerland?  Sure - as long as we have background checks, limits on transportation and ammunition, strict limits on CC permits, restrictions on high capacity magazines, etc., etc.

But they will never agree to it, because ... "Muh freedumbs!".

continue to oppose gun safety or gun reform because mass killings are considered to be statistically acceptable in terms of furthering their fascist goals. Unfortunate, perhaps, but just the cost of doing business. Spoken sotto voce, if not with the knowing nods of nonsensical causes and explanations (e.g., wokeness), and absurd solutions (e.g., buildings should have only one door).  Anything and everything but restricting or banning the deadly weapons causing the murders.

The mass murders undergird and foster fascist  power plays and authoritarian governance by creating fear, crises, and polarization.. Gun safety reforms reduce the number of gun sales (e.g., raising age to 21- less sales) and result in less political funding  capabilities.  Moreover, these tragedies impact confidence in the  public school systems and result in increased police funding and militarization   Pure evil at work.

    Here is a little more on Israel's gun controls (5.00 / 5) (#143)
by MO Blue on Fri May 27, 2022 at 10:09:12 AM EST
    From the Times of Israel

Comparing America to Israel on gun laws is dishonest - and revealing

Israelis are well-armed, of course, but any similarity to conservative Americans masks a fundamental difference: In Israel, guns are tightly controlled and carefully tracked by the state.
    ...
There's more. Once they are granted the right to carry a gun, Israelis are limited to just 50 bullets in their possession at any given time. They must shoot or return old bullets before they can buy new ones, a process that can only take place at tightly regulated shooting ranges where each bullet's sale is carefully registered. The types of guns permitted also depend on the reason for the license - i.e., a veterinarian may only purchase a gun approved by the government for the killing of animals, a hunter's license only permits the purchase of a firearm from an approved firearms list kept by the Parks Authority, and so forth.

As stated in this and numerous other articles by Israelis, for the right wing to compare Israel to America is completely dishonest. But that of course is SOP for you and the right wing.

It was 3:15 on the morning of June 26, 1980, and Congressman Bob Livingston was extraordinarily drunk, hiding in the congressional gym beneath the Rayburn House Office Building, petrified that a team of highly trained right-wing homosexual assassins working on behalf of Ronald Reagan was about to kill him.

This account of the alleged "homosexual ring" that controlled Ronald Reagan, and the efforts to expose it on the eve of the 1980 Republican National Convention that nominated him for the presidency, is compiled from interviews with several of the surviving participants and documents uncovered in the papers of former Washington Post Executive Editor Ben Bradlee. Appropriately for a story involving what was once considered the gravest sin in American politics, it has never been told until now.
