Happy Halloween and Open Thread

Happy Halloween to all of you who just love, love, love this holiday. If you costumed up as a real person or character, please let us know who you chose.

For any of you who went trick or treating, let us know if you got your favorite candy and what it is. And if you put a "no candy here" sign on your front door, let us know that, too.

I think it's good to put a little merriment in the air for one night -- we could all use a night's relief from the horrible suffering, cruelty and death we're watching and reading about 24/7 in the Middle East. May the war be over soon.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

the slogan "From the river to the sea" (as this video does in its final frame) when urging the Administration to extend less than unequivocal support for Israeli policy and actions. The nation of Israel is situated between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. That slogan means that Israel should be entirely eliminated; America public opinion is nowhere near that position. It is likewise a big mistake, in terms of American politics and public opinion, to call on Biden to pressure Israel to pursue a less murderous policy in Gaza without at the same time condemning the conduct and policy/program of Hamas. (I have also previously expressed my strong opposition to any degradation in the definition of "genocide" as a sui generis crime against humanity)

The three-term congresswoman is at odds with many in the Democratic Party in her support for a one-state solution that would meld Israel, the West Bank and Gaza into one country, over a two-state option that would create an independent Israel and Palestine.

I don't know anybody else currently in Congress to advocate that.  I would love to see a poll of Israel, the West Bank and Gaza asking: Suppose Israel adopted a 100% secular, written constitution and offered full citizenship to any resident of the mentioned areas who pledges allegiance to it; would you be on board?

    But Israel won't do that. (5.00 / 1) (#25)
by Donald from Hawaii on Mon Nov 06, 2023 at 04:43:43 AM EST
At least, it won't do that right now, and most certainly not under this particular prime minister and his far-right government.

Noted British journalist and historian Max Hastings has interviewed Benjamin Netanyahu extensively over the decades. In his book "Editor: A Memoir", he recalled his own dismay at the Israeli prime minister's racist contempt for Arabs and non-white Jews and his enthusiastic support for ethnic cleansing:

"At Bibi Netanyahu's dinner table in Jerusalem, I listened with crawling dismay to Bibi talking about the future of his country. 'In the next war, if we do it right we have a chance to get all the Arabs out,' he said. 'We can clear the West Bank and sort out Jerusalem.' He joked about the Golani Brigade, the Israeli infantry force in which so many men were North African or Yemenite Jews. 'They okay as long as they're led by white officers.' He grinned."

"In the next war, if we do it right we have a chance to get all the Arabs out. We can clear the West Bank and sort out Jerusalem."

Just let that particular quote sink in for a moment, and then realize that what Netanyahu is advocating here is really no less immoral and repulsive than what the radicals of Hamas and Islamic Jihad propose with their nonsensical "From the river to the sea" vow.

What we absolutely need right now are adults in the room, not enablers. We should be under no illusions about the murderous intentions of both Hamas and Benjamin Netanyahu, and the mutual contempt they both share for the 2.1 million Palestinians in Gaza who've suffered under Hamas's cruel and criminal misrule following the forcible expulsion of the Palestinian Authority in 2006, which was welcomed by the Netanyahu government at the time.

From Gideon Levy, Israeli journalist and writer:

"I'm an Israeli. I was born in Israel. I even perceive myself as an Israeli patriot. I care about Israel, I belong to Israel, I am attached to Israel. Don't speak about symmetry, because there is no symmetry.

"I would even suggest that there is no conflict. Was there a French-Algerian conflict? There was a brutal French occupation in Algeria, which came to its end. Similarly, there is no Israeli-Palestinian conflict. There is a brutal Israeli occupation, which must come to its end, one way or the other.

"In our own backyard, there is a regime which is today by far one of the most cruel, brutal tyrannies on earth, and I know what I say because [as a journalist] I have covered it for forty years. And [the Netanyahu regime] cannot be defined but as an Apartheid.

"Two peoples live on one piece of land, and one people have all the rights in the world - and I'm not just talking about the occupied territories - and the other people have no rights whatsoever. It looks like Apartheid. It talks like Apartheid. It IS Apartheid.

"And nobody can contradict me. Go to the Jordan Valley. See the prosperity in the [Jewish] settlements and then, go and see the Palestinians who live there without electricity, without water, without any rights. And then tell me if it's Apartheid, or you might want to invent another title."

Watching events unfold over the past four weeks, from Hamas' unconscionable surprise assault against and slaughter of unarmed and defenseless Israeli civilians, to the horrific military overreaction and reprisal by the Netanyahu regime against an equally defenseless Palestinian populace whose only crime is getting caught in the crossfire, I am convinced that Benjamin Netanyahu is absolutely the wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time for Israel.

Netanyahu doesn't really care about the fate of those 240 hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza. They are likely expendable commodities in his eyes. If he had really cared about Israeli security, then he would have had troops stationed along the Gaza border, one of the most hostile and volatile regions in the world, thanks in no small part to the shortsighted policies of his own government.

Instead, there were none, and the kibbutzes along that frontier were laid bare before Hamas's homicidal rampage. Those IDF troops were all deployed in the West Bank to protect illegal Jewish settlements in the Jordan Valley and facilitate further theft and misappropriation of Palestinian property and territory, and advance Netanyahu's desire to eventually annex the entire territory to Israel proper.

Benjamin Netanyahu cares about one thing and one thing only: his own power, and the attendant prestige and personal well-being that comes with it. This present and tragic conflict isn't about Israel's existence. Hell, thanks to the United States, that country has enough firepower to blow up half the Middle East from Tunisia to the Persian Gulf and further, its Arab neighbors all know that.

No, the corrupt and indicted Netanyahu sees this so-called war as his own personal Godsend, his "Get Out of Jail Free" card from his current criminal trial and perhaps worst of all, a prime and last-chance opportunity to settle all his old scores with others for their perceived transgressions and slights against him. And mark my words, there are plenty of those "others" on his list and in his crosshairs right now.

And I fear that if the Biden administration doesn't do something fairly quickly to rein in this unhinged and monomaniacal yahoo and clip his wings, Netanyahu will probably lead his country and region - and by extension us, as well - to some truly dreadful grief. At the very least, he will have ensured a perpetuation on the recurring cycle of violence, recrimination and retribution in the Holy Land for the foreseeable future.

Let us Pray and work for peace.

by Donald from Hawaii on Mon Nov 06, 2023 at 05:50:06 PM EST

Unfortunately, Benjamin Netanyahu's idea of a two-state solution is not Israel and Palestine but rather, the present Kingdom of Jordan (whose citizens are already majority Palestinian) and an exclusively Jewish state of greater Israel which extends "from the river to the sea" itself.

Further, he would purge that greater Israel of both the Palestinians and the country's citizens of Arab descent, who presently constitute 21% of Israel's population of 9.5 million.

what I have read is not positive.  Thus is PWire giving perspective

But it's important to put the poll in perspective:

This poll tells us nothing about next year. It only tells us what might happen if the election were held today.
The CBS News poll out today, which was done entirely online and not by phone, did not see the same Biden collapse among young voters.
While Republicans are actively running presidential campaigns and holding rallies, Biden's campaign won't really begin until early next year.
Biden's record is actually quite popular, once voters hear about it.
This election will likely be decided by the "double-haters" -- those voters who disapprove of both Biden and Trump -- and most Political Wire readers probably don't know many of them.
Polls of the presidential race before the primaries begin are not very predictive, but this may not hold in a race likely to feature two presidents who are universally known.
Polls predicted a "red wave" in the 2022 midterms that never actually materialized.

These so-called polls predicted just a couple weeks ago that the GOP would completely take over the Virginia State Legislature and gain double-digit seats in both chambers of the New Jersey State Legislature.

Instead, the opposite happened. Democrats increased their numbers in the New Jersey Statehouse, and not only held the Virginia Senate but also took a majority on the House of Delegates.

And Del. Danica Roem (D-Fairfax) became the first transgender person elected to the Virginia State Senate. While she was campaigning on mundane bread-and-butter issues such as road / infrastructure repair and increased spending for Virginia public schools, her Republican opponent (retired military) ran almost exclusively on his advocacy for a ban on high school transgender athletes. Not surprisingly, Ms. Roem won rather handily.

Further, if we look even further down ballot at school board elections across the country, most all of the candidates put forth by the whacked-out she-devils of the Hitler-quoting Moms for Liberty "parental rights" front group got their a$$es handed to them at the ballot box.

Basically, voters' patience has clearly worn thin with the MAGA-GOP's proposed new world order, which has really been nothing but a prolonged multi-year temper tantrum.

... David Axelrod is irrelevant. He rode Obama's coattails to some prominence back in 2008, but has since frittered it away, mostly because people quickly caught on to his shtick, e.g., his propensity to reframe so-called conventional wisdom as though it were his own original thought.

In 2014, Britain's Labour Party hired Axelrod for a cool $1 million annually as senior advisor to then-party leader Ed Miliband in the run-up to the 2015 election, in which he spewed shopworn liberal platitudes for 18 months, right up until the moment Labour got thoroughly trounced by David Cameron and the Conservative Party.

Axelrod's really not as smart or good as he thinks he is.

    2. Ramaswamy saw Trump on the Mexican wall and uped him a

     3. DeSantis will move forward on the wall between US/Mexico and

     4.  The 57-year old confirmed bachelor, Senator Tim Scott,  trotted

speculated that the campaign scoured Christian Mingle for
Tim.  Now, of course, the reported rumors and concerns of donors can
be put to rest.  In fact, the romance appears quite serious --it
Is reported that the lovely couple was seen actually holding

Some Tantalizing Comments From Liz Cheney (none / 0) (#101)
by RickyJim on Sun Dec 17, 2023 at 07:30:46 PM EST
From "Oath and Honor" Chapters 17 and 20:
However, McCarthy said that he and Senate GOP Leader McConnell had spoken earlier that evening, and McConnell's view was that once Trump was impeached, we could pass a 14th Amendment ban on Trump running in the future by a simple majority vote.
I don't know if Mitch McConnell would have voted to convict Trump if more House Republicans had voted to impeach him. Maybe he always hoped that impeachment alone would end Trump's political career.

Cheney doesn't explain why the separate 14th amendment vote never happened.  Why don't the Democrats introduce such a resolution now?

It is not at all apparent (5.00 / 1) (#102)
by Peter G on Mon Dec 18, 2023 at 09:28:38 AM EST
that either House of Congress has authority under the Constitution to declare someone ineligible under section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment. Nothing in the language of the amendment says so.  And the power to bar someone from holding office in the future is given to the Senate in Article I but only incident to a conviction on an impeachment.

So Why Do State Courts Have the Authority? (none / 0) (#103)
by RickyJim on Mon Dec 18, 2023 at 12:11:43 PM EST
Here are some more quotes from Cheney's book:
The Democrats' (impeachment) resolution cited Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which explicitly provides that:
No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.

Even though the information available at the time was skeletal compared with the mountain of material the January 6th Select Committee ultimately compiled, it was sufficient to convince 57 United States senators--including seven Republicans--to vote to convict Donald Trump. The 57-to-43 vote fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to convict. But it was the largest bipartisan vote in history for the conviction of a president on an impeachment charge.
Ten more Republican votes would have been needed to convict. There were at least 10 more Republicans who had publicly condemned Trump's conduct but voted against conviction because Trump was already out of office when the trial took place. Another 16 Republicans made no mention of Trump in their statements, but said they were voting to acquit because they had concluded that the US Senate lacks the authority to convict a former president. Only a handful of Republican senators seemed to argue that Trump's conduct did not actually warrant conviction.
I don't understand why the Democrats didn't counter the Republican argument that impeachment can't be used against a non sitting President by saying that they were really voting on whether Sec. 3 of the 14th Amendment is to be applied.

My guess is because the R's are not sincere (5.00 / 1) (#104)
by Peter G on Mon Dec 18, 2023 at 07:25:06 PM EST
They had an excuse to vote not to convict, but if it was not that excuse it would have been something else. I'm not a politics expert, but the D's must have figured it was not to their advantage to play the R's game of moving the goalposts, if in the end the D's weren't going to be allowed to get the 2/3 majority they needed to win.
