Incredible performance by Shakira (with BZRP) on the Tonight Show last week. I've never seen a late night TV show audience so engaged in the song that they know every word and move in Spanish. (It's her "swan song" to her long- time partner/father of her kids, the soccer player Pique, who cheated on her with a much younger female, and who is not helping her with her tax evasion case pending in Spain). It is the number one song globally.

    Mrs. Hamer died today in 1977. She was vice-chair of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party who tried to be seated at the Democratic Convention in Atlantic City in 1964. Mrs. Hamer was a giant in the fight for voting and civil rights in Mississippi.

    are talking about the "other crime" Alvin Bragg may use to elevate his misdemeanor to a felony.

    Most people think he wont indict him on a misdemeanor without the whole furtherance of another crime part.

     Slyly suggesting he may have something more serious than a campaign finance violation, the obvious one, up his sleeve.  
    Any idea what that might be?  Something juicy like Racketeering or Conspiracy?

    on NY criminal law. But it is unfortunately (in general) true that the criminal codes of the states, like the federal criminal code, are overloaded with offenses, a plague of overcriminalization that empowers prosecutors to manipulate the charges by doubling up (at the least) in almost any case to pressure -- and increase punishment for -- disfavored defendants. I know you are celebrating that fact in this unusual case (and understandably so) but in general and in principle it is abusive and undesirable.

    Is to bring the book "Porno-Graphics: The Shame of Our Art Museums" by Dan Greenburg back into print and distribute it where they complain.  My copy is still in great condition (considering I've had it since the early 70's) but I am not giving it up.  Not sure whether there is anywhere you can view it, but their image of David has a well placed fig leaf on the translucent oversheet.

    are intentionally out of proportion when looking at a frontal photo so the will look correctly proportioned when you are standing on the ground looking up.  

    He is very tall.  

    The frontal photo was not an option when he was made of course.

    Because David was intended to be viewed from below, Michelangelo eschewed ideal proportioning and instead carved the head, arms, and hands much larger than the torso and legs. This creates the illusion that David is alert and poised for action, especially when viewed from below. The deeply furrowed brow is exaggerated, and the right hand is especially large, possibly as a nod to David's biblical nickname manu fortis, or strong hand.

    With $4.3 billion in pending litigation against the network - and let's remember, there's no cap on punitive damages, so the ultimate award to plaintiffs could actually be far more severe - I'm really wondering if Fox News itself can survive.

    The Murdochs are likely far more concerned about how this litigation's increasingly likely outcome will affect Fox Corp. as a whole. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they spin Fox News off as an autonomous company and then let it plummet to oblivion in a death spiral, in order to save the rest of their empire. The question will then be whether or not the courts will allow them to do so, especially when their obvious purpose would be to evade financial culpability for the damage they caused.

    These lawsuits bear watching.

In a secret ballot, would they approve a potential death penalty?  And btw, the Supreme Court of the United States has long held that the death penalty is unconstitutional for any crime other than an intentional murder (or treason in wartime). I don't think a state legislature has the authority to avoid that precedent by the verbal trick of redefining as "murder" an act which has never legally been considered to come within a correct understanding of that category.

    ... the corrosive influence of Fox News and other right-wing media on our country's politics. In that regard, I'd offer the following points:

    • It is a myth that our Constitution somehow endows American democracy with an innate capacity for self-correction if the political pendulum swings too far in either direction. It doesn't. Rather, democracy has always been almost entirely dependent upon the will and ability of good people to stand up and defend it whenever moments of existential crisis (such as the current one) arise.

    • We need to stop conflating the active advocacy of sedition and political lies by Fox News, et al., with the exercise of free speech under the First Amendment. The Constitution's authors, who had themselves experienced revolution and the upending of the political order of things, certainly knew the difference. They acted accordingly in their times, and trusted that we would do likewise in ours.

    • We have to cease deluding ourselves that the Republican Party's willful undermining of our country's democratic values and institutions is somehow a constitutionally protected activity. It isn't. It's treason or at the very least, tantamount to it.

    • Our Constitution's authors were not so naive as to believe that people couldn't be motivated by self-interest to betray the national trust, nor was it ever their intent to hamstring the majority's ability to protect democracy and respond appropriately to any internal domestic threats during those aforementioned moments of existential crisis.

    We are presently faced with an intransigent and unapologetically fascist white nationalist movement that, if history is any indication and guide, has typically operated without restraint or ethics and has respected neither boundaries nor decency. It will continue to do so unless and until it is decisively and resolutely confronted and deterred.

    Such authoritarian movements cannot logically be accommodated through reason and compromise, nor will their irrational adherents be somehow shamed by our admonitions and deterred by our contempt. Rather, they must instead be completely and successfully vanquished by whatever means available, up to and including the use of force if necessary.

    In one of the Drag Queen free zones they decided to do Story Hour dressed as men, which they are - the ones I've known did not consider themselves trans, but as glamorous men.  Tons of makeup and hair and nails.  But as men. In suites maybe.

    Would this be illegal?  Don't the laws specifically talk about clothes of the opposite gender.

    Just wondering.  This has probably already been done.

    getting worse  for the next few years.  At least in about half of the US.  court decisions and political polarization is going to make life hard for blue people in red places.  And vice versa I guess.

    That's going to lead to ghettoization based on politics that will make the physical world mor like the social media world  

    More people living in isolated bubbles.

    If I could manage it financially I would definitely move to a blue state.  That woman is likely going to be the governor here the rest of my life.

    Happening all over.

    I think the insane political paralysis around guns will end when more children who lived through this, particularly the last decade, become old enough to vote.

    have decided to eliminate all funding for our public libraries because the ACLU is suing them for banning books.

    Our libraries are some the best in the entire country and provide so many much needed services to our communities. Not sure how we fight this abuse of power at the state level.

    Made a movie there for TNT in 2006 about Dale Helmig, a person believed to be wrongfully convicted. Turns out, he was and has since been released.

    Over the years, questions about Helmig's guilt were raised in a documentary produced by the Illinois State University Innocence Project and a television program on TNT television.

    It was called "Was Justice Denied?".  Burton Roberts, who played the judge in Bonfire of the Vanities, RIP, was also in it. We filmed all over Jefferson City, at the courthouse and the penitentiary, and the house where the dead mother lived.

    I hope you get your libraries back.

    Trump it's been obvious to me that we never really resolved a lot of long standing issues. I see us now as like pre civil war with blue states being free states and red states being slave states.
