Pomp and Circumstance: Coronation of King Charles, III

Today was the big day for Prince Charles, to be known hereafter as King Charles, III.

What struck you from the procession video? For me, it was how they placed Harry on the sidelines, with the frou-frou topping of the hat of the person in front of him in his face.

I also wondered if the woman behind Princess Kate might be a crasher. Aside from the expression on her face, she seems to be the only woman in the room not wearing a hat.

Here are some excellent photos ("The Best of the Red Carpet") from Infobae. [More...]

Camilla will now be known as the "Queen Consort". It was nice to see her children, grandchildren, sister and even her ex-husband at the coronation. Here are some photos from an earlier occasion explaining who is who.

I think Prince Andrew must have watched from home on the telly. I didn't see any reference to him, let alone a photo. (Correction: He was there, in the same row as Prince Harry.)

He was put in the same row as Harry on the end, next to his daughter and son-in-law.

A news article said he got booed by the crowd leaving the event.

Without a hat appears to be wearing a coronation robe. If so, she might be a member of the House of Lords.

Princess Alexandra of Kent. She is 86 and was Queen Elizabeth's cousin. She is in the official coronation portrait.

of hereditary monarchy, the coronation was a grand "wedding"  of something old, new, borrowed and blue. The spectacle was rooted in pomp, pageantry and history.

The tradition such as  extravagant costumes,  parade, jeweled crowns, and beautiful music--old and new,, was budged into the present with blessings by Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, and Sikk leaders. A Roman Catholic leader apparently awaits a future coronation.

Perhaps the most "thoroughly modern Millie" moment was the King and Queen both had second marriages.  And, it was now OK. King Edward VIii was required by the government to abdicate so that he might marry the divorced woman he loved.  Welcome progress, although Wallis may be spinning in her grave.

Edward's brother, Albert, became King, and his grand nephew, was coronated as Charles Iii (a greater bestowal than Harlan Crow's to Clarence's grand nephew).

Royals are not immune from family dysfunction, and there  were the blues with Andrew and Harry, for vastly different reasons. It seemed to be handled reasonably well-- present but subdued-- third row with cousins and a lady (probably a Lady) with a big old hat, as is the custom.

First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden and her granddaughter, Finnegan Biden, looked great in their blue and yellow dresses, representing American citizens well and bringing the reality of Ukrainian sufferings to the fore.

Cardinal Nichols was invited and offered blessings along with other religious leaders. That would be the first time in over 400 years.

This has been a reoccurring theme in Britain. The evil Megan has prevented her children from experiencing Charles coronation. Here is just one example:

"What's a shame is how megan did not let her kids experience their grandfather's coronation as the king of England.  Now that takes a low level of petty. Birthdays don't have to be celebrated on exact day."

Exactly where were Archie and Lili going to experience their grandfather's coronation? It has been reported numerous times that they were not invited to the coronation at the Abby. If they had gone to England they would not been with their parents at the Abby. They would have been offsite with a nanny. The only way they could have experienced the actual coronation would have been by watching it on TV. We do have televisions in the US.

BTW, coronations do not have to be celebrated on the exact same day as their grandson's birthday. There were 364 other days in the year that this could have occurred. Had it not occurred on Archie's birthday, Charles might have found the time to have one of his minions send out a Happy Birthday message to his grandson.

According to reports, it was arranged for him to leave during the ceremony and only return during the singing of the anthem. Prior misbehavior and being 5 has its rewards. It was IMO a great plan.

I managed to fast forward to a piece of music, which is a favorite of mine, on the two hour Youtube video of the coronation and only listened to it.  It is an anthem of Handel that begins, "Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet crowned Solomon king".  I knew it was there since it has been performed at every British coronation since 1727.  Unfortunately the sound on the video was sub par.

about the royals, and it came up with this -

There once was a prince from Kent,
    Whose nose was exceedingly bent,
    He walked into a door,
    And bent it even more,
Now he's got a nose that's quite different.

Is'nt that stupid?  What's with that last line?
