Should Russ Feingold Run for President?

Russ Feingold is considering a run for President in 2008. He says he might if there's enough support. How's his record? Close to perfect--his one error was voting to confirm Ashcroft, but that pales in comparision to these positions:

Feel free to leave your support here. I'll be part of a conference call with Sen. Feingold next week, and I'm sure his staff will see and relay your support.

    1. What is his position on the Iraq war? 2. How was his speech in the Senate debate about Gonzales?

I love Russ, but I think he's too short to win (speaking as a vertically challenged person myself).

he's got 3/4 of the comments section, at least :) While it appears like he's coming from off the radar, I really think he would be a quality candidate and a great president.

I would happily vote for Feingold for President. Paul Wellstone used to be the Senator who most closely represented my views; Feingold holds that distinction for me now. I could see Feingold having a broad appeal. Many people who may not agree with him on issues would admire his willingness to stand on principle and go it alone if need be.

    And then there's Joe Lieberman....

Not my first choice, but interesting to consider. At least we would know where he stands.

The ONLY Senator to NOT vote along party lines on Bill's impeachment. (He voted to impeach.)

What is your call with them about? His candidacy or legislative stuff. If it is about a potential candidacy they are moving faster than I thought.

I think it's about all things political and how bloggers can help the Democrats get the message out and play a role. I expect the subject of 2008 will come up, but I don't have anything to do with setting the agenda. We do get to ask questions though. So far I've partcipated in calls with Simon Rosenberg, Howard Dean, Donnie Fowler and Martin Frost--all of them let us ask whatever we wanted. They never refused to answer a question, and were very grateful for blog coverage. I'm learning a lot from these calls, from those we interview and the questions asked by the other bloggers. I'm sure one of us will live blog the call --its Tuesday--you'll get a full report.

Okay. So I could look it up. 1. Yes, he's very good on the Iraq war question. He opposed the Bush war resolution in October 2002. 2. Another positive. He was an early opponent of Alberto Gonzales on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Maybe some blogger should launch a fund-raising campaign to buy him some elevator shoes.

He should run. He may not win, but he will clearly make some noise and and help t' focus th' issues in '08. Th' debate will be good fer th' herd.

I just saw Feingold on Q&A with Brian Lamb on C-Span. Very, very impressed. He's got an understated, commonsense quality about him that would appeal to people who don't agree with him on every issue. His reputation as a reformer could win over some of those Perot voters who think all politicians are basically corrupt. And no one could ever paint him as a flip-flopper.

Actually, Sen. Feingold did not vote to impeach President Clinton. He did vote to allow witnesses or continue the trial or some process question, but voted against both articles. Get your facts straight.

Come to think of it, you're even more wrong than I originally thought. There were Senate Republicans who voted against impeachment. I believe it was 5 on one count and 10 on the other.
