Rather and Daily Show Win Peabody Awards

The Peabody Awards for electronic media excellence have been announced. One winner that is taking some by surpise is 60 Minutes II and Dan Rather and Mary Mapes - for their Abu Ghraib report. Good for them. That was a great report and they deserve the recognition.

The Peabody given to the Wednesday edition of "60 Minutes" honored an exclusive story, produced by Mary Mapes and reported by Dan Rather, about the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. Several months after that journalistic coup, Ms. Mapes was fired and Mr. Rather retired as anchor of the "CBS Evening News" earlier than planned in the wake of another broadcast, on President George W. Bush's National Guard service. After initially backing its reporters and their report, CBS said they may have based it on falsified documents.

In citing the report, the committee said, "This Dan Rather report broke the story of the abuses at Abu Ghraib Prison in Baghdad, airing for the first time the photographs of American soldiers and abused Iraqi prisoners that shocked the world. "

Another winner was the Daily Show:

"The Daily Show," which combines elements of entertainment and news, was honored for its presidential election coverage, as it had been four years earlier.

"All of us at 'The Daily Show' very much appreciate the Peabody Committee's recognition of our work," Mr. Stewart said in a statement released by the show. "Because this is the first time we've ever released a statement, we'd also like to, just for the hell of it, categorically deny all charges and say that we find them both scurrilous and without merit."

You know what, you can give these two an award if you want. It' sort of like giving Nixon an integrity award the same year he got impeached. These two quacks got what they deserved: enternal national shame. It's all they'll ever be remembered for.

The Daily Show shouldn't be held to the same standards. It's a comedy show, not a news show. Stewart had a real news man on after a flubbed story, and made a point to announce that they don't even do fact checking. I don't think a show like that can be a quack. It's darned funny though.

I think he was talking about Mapes and Rather, not 60 Min. II and The Daily Show.

Any fool who critiqes Rather should be forced to sleep with bill Olielly and Mr. ann coulter first. The nerve to attack a real Journalist while they grovel and slurp up the slim and scum put out by Faux Notnews is pathetic.

MB, Why hasn't O'Reilly or Hannity or Linda Fester gotten a Peabody? Their shows have been around as long as TDS. You would think that the judges should certainly have recognized their astute interviewing techniques, or their high standards of excellence. Why no awards? Because they suck! Just like your knowledge of contemporary american history.

Rather and Mapes' Abu Gharib piece was a masterpiece. No wonder the Talibanicans have such a hard on for Rather and get so hysterically defensive about torture, e.g. "fraternity pranks".

Ed Beckman - Your problem is that you don't understand something. Coulter and O'Reilly are commentators. They are supposed to give opinions. This they do. Rather and company were supposed to be news reporters. They were supposed to give the facts. Given that Rather was forced out and others fired, you should be able to draw your own conclusions. There is a huge, huge, huge difference. Che - They have something better. A huge audience and lots of money. BTW - How'd you like my link on Che? B.B. - Surprise, surprise, Sgt Carter!

Rather relied on bad intelligence. What! You blame him for that!? Try to be consistent, if you don't mind the blood of 1500+ Americans on your hands because of relying on 'bad intelligence', you shouldn't have a problem with Rather for one minor error after a lifetime of excellent reporting.

What happened with this story anyway? I dont think we ever got an answer on the questions that were raised regarding Bush's military service.

Rather was FED bad intelligence. On purpose, to destroy him. No, I don't own "Catcher in the Rye," although I have frequent urges to go and buy copies of it.

Sailor - Rather did so because he was so eager to do so. What is that saying? You can't cheat an honest man. And your disagreement with Repubs does back as least as far Rather's. And no, I don't think for a minute that any President is eager to send people to be killed. Emphasis on "any President." Chupetin - They got an answer. You just didn't like it, so you wait a while and bring it up again. It is called "re-writing history," and is one of the things I agree with Ann Coulter about. The Left keeps trying.

"And no, I don't think for a minute that any President is eager to send people to be killed. Emphasis on "any President." " Sentiments straight out of dreamland. If only they were true. Che: Fester does indeed make Sally Jesse Raphael seem like: 1) a substantive talk show host; 2)a sight for sore eyes! See, wingers, it IS all relative.

Karl Rove was the initiator, but he was fed via intermediaries. BTW, the documents may have been false, but the story is true. Bush did not do all of his service in the National Guard. He could be considered a deserter.

PPJ - Eager is as eager does. Of course if Bush had ever been closer to the action than weekend fox hunts, he probobly wouldnt be quite so eager. Btw, as regards your responce to Sailor, I havnt seen so much wriggling after being completely nailed since the Marciano/Walcott fight.

Chupetin - Investigaed until it turned blue, and when the facts came out, nothing was there. The fake memo just put the icing on the cake. And if you don't understand that, just keep on trying to re-write history.

Can anybody else back that up. Jim is not exactly trustworthy when it comes to Bush. What are the facts that came out? And what is this trying to rewrite history crap. Asking questions is rewriting history? And why would anybody care what Ann Coulter has to say?
