Arnold Elected Governor of California

At 8:01 (PT), Fox News projects that Gray Davis has lost the recall by a landslide and Arnold Schwarzenegger has been elected Governor. Also, the network projects that Proposition 54, the Racial Privacy initiative, has been defeated. CNN projects the same.

These projections are based on exit polls. CNN says women voted for Arnold 42% over 37% for Bustamante. In other words, the last minute sex smears didn't work.

Early news reports confirming Arnold's win: ABC News. The Arizona Republic runs with the headline Calif. voters revolt against Davis.

Jay Leno will be introducing Arnold when he comes out to make his victory speech.

Update: Atrios is depressed. He suggests you buy him some presents.

Update: What's next for Maria at NBC?

CNN reports that Bustamante says he will stay on as Lt. Governor.

Final Update: Arnold gave a great victory speech. He reached out, he was sincere and he had a good message. And he had Maria, his biggest asset. We give his speech an A.

He wanted this job, he campaigned like crazy for it, and he earned it. The good cheer on the stage was infectious. We hope he maintains his passion and does great things for the state of California. We know we'll disagree with him on certain issues, particularly his support for the repeal of the law granting drivers' licenses to undocumented residents, but there isn't any politician we'd agree with on every issue.

Finally, we're glad the smear campaign failed. It was irrelevant, trash politics. We're glad he won. Congratulations, Arnold, you earned this. We wish you good luck and hope you accomplish great things for California. And we hope you thank your lucky stars every night that you have Maria by your side.
