Bill Clinton a Hit in Rome

The New York Times reports that former President Bill Clinton had some adoring fans in Rome this week:

Along the streets, people starting yelling "Bill, Bill, Bill," and a few shouted "U.S.A.!" One shopkeeper raced out with a photograph of Mr. Clinton on a past visit.

There was certainly a lot of affection for Mr. Clinton, who consistently got better press here during his presidency than Mr. Bush does....On Thursday, by the time Mr. Clinton made it out of the back streets and into the open square, a mob of hundreds developed. Mr. Clinton's nervous Italian bodyguards put him in a Mercedes and sped him away.

There's an argument going on in the comments section of America Blog about Clinton's policies during his presidency. It was generated by this post at Daily Kos.

My view has been that while Clinton was no liberal on criminal justice issues and not supportive enough of civil liberties and privacy rights, he was better than Bush and most other Republicans by miles.

Moral of the story: Beware Republicans first, Centrist Dems second.

Clinton was a damn fine president. He faced the kind of insane, sustained, well-funded opposition that would have consumed a wimp like Bush in two or three months. Remember Jerry Falwell, in front of a weekly audience of millions, hawking video tapes accusing Clinton of murder in the death of their best friend? If Falwell's a man of God, I'll take the Devil, thank you very much cause Satan knows how to deal with liars. When told that Grant was a drunk, he said, "Find me what brand of whiskey he drinks and send a case to all my other generals." The same with Clinton, with a different weakness. Unfortunately, the present occupant of the White House has no vices except his lust for power, his ignorance, his narcissism, and his total incompetence. And those, plus Cheney, are the most unacceptable vices a president can have. Bring back Clinton.

Bill Clinton was and always will be the great myth, so he will always be looked on as a great president.

Sort of like what makes Bush more evil, what made Clinton better was the people he surrounded himself with. He had at times the most amazing cabinet members ever. And some of the wackiest, but the good ones really stand out.

Everywhere I travel, I hear stories about how Clinton "walked amongst the people". He was loved by many around the world, they saw him as a regular, caring person. In my travels, I have never heard a kind word about Bush. People talk about how he flies in, takes a helicopter (usually) to his meetings, and never meets with locals. He is seen as aloof and arrogant. Regardless of the truth of these perceptions, it is amazing that our president has such poor political skills. No wonder he had to steal two elections. Shame on us for letting him get away with it.

Yes Clinton had his mistakes to live down, but Bush will have the decline of our country on the world stage to deal with once he's out of office, which won't be soon enough. Besides the fact he is just plain stupid, where will this clown fit in to our history books. As material for the daily show? More than likely.

clinton's only archenemy was the republicans, bush on the other hand has a list, no a dossier, no files, no a database, of enemies. he probably should not be out walking among the commoners.
