Cheney Raises $200k for Musgrave

Dick Cheney came to Colorado today to raise money for Republican Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave, the chief architect of the constitutional ban against gay marriage.

Vice President Dick Cheney helped raise an estimated $200,000 Monday for the campaign of Republican Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, who is considered one of the most vulnerable incumbents in Congress.

Musgrave, one of the original sponsors of a proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, has proved "to be exactly the right person for the job," Cheney told a crowd about 200 people who paid $500 to $4,000 to attend the luncheon in downtown Denver.

The money is raised through the Retain Our Majority Program, created in 1999 by Tom DeLay.

ROMP was designed by DeLay in 1999 as a way to channel money from members representing solidly Republican districts to their more marginal members. By topping off their vulnerable lawmakers' accounts by March 31, Republicans hope to ward off potential opponents by letting them know that any challenge would be expensive.[The Hill, 3/17/05]

But is Musgrave really vulnerable? She beat her last opponent, Stan Matsunaka, 51% to 45%. Chris Shays, who had a far narrower win than Musgrave in 2004, is not on the list.

Rep. Christopher Shays (R-Conn.), who narrowly won his race in November, was not included on the ROMP list. Shays was a vocal critic of a proposed change in the House rules that would have allowed DeLay to stay on as majority leader if indicted.

Here's the full list:

The 10 beneficiaries are Reps. Bob Beauprez (Colo.), Mike Fitzpatrick (Pa.), Jim Gerlach (Pa.), Marilyn Musgrave (Colo.), Anne Northup (Ky.), Jon Porter (Nev.), Dave Reichert (Wash.), Rick Renzi (Ariz.), Rob Simmons (Conn.) and Mike Sodrel (Ind.).

The Democrats have a similar program. Their list this year includes:

Reps. John Barrow (Ga.), Melissa Bean (Ill.), Leonard Boswell (Iowa), Chet Edwards (Texas), Stephanie Herseth (S.D.), Brian Higgins (N.Y.), Jim Matheson (Utah), Charlie Melancon (La.), Dennis Moore (Kan.) and John Salazar (Colo.).
