Cunningham Subpoenaed to Grand Jury over Home Sale

Bump and Update: GPO Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham was served with a federal grand jury subpoena today.

Original Post: June 20, 2005

This ad ran today in the online version of CongressDaily AM and should be in the PM version and The Hotline.

Background here and here.

A defense contractor who had every reason in the world to ingratiate himself with GOP Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham bought the powerful defense appropriator's house back home in California for $1.6 million and sold it nine months later at a $700,000 loss. Since this happened just as the contractor's fortunes took off and at a time when it was thought impossible to lose money in the San Diego-area real estate market, the whole deal looked fishy, indeed demanding of an ethics investigation.

Also not happy with Cunningham: AmericaBlog. More details at Josh Marshall and the San Diego Union Tribune.

It's not thought to be impossible to lose money in the San Diego home market. It IS impossible. The "Duke Stir" is history.

To Clarify: the "Duke Stir" is a 42 foot sailboat on the patomac, owned by the same contractor, that Cunningham lives on in DC.

Does anyone know if Cunningham is paying any rent for the use of the boat? I've never seen it addressed.

"I've never even smoked a marijuana cigarette" says Cunningham. Oh, well, that should rule out any credibility questions being raised. I love this ad, and hope they do run it again. We must find a way to get the corruption out of politics. mpower, I have been searching for information on the rent issue. Haven't found anything.

Both the "Duke Stir" and the "Dukester" are sinking real fast.

Does anyone know if Cunningham is paying any rent for the use of the boat? I've never seen it addressed. Fox News asked that very question last Wednesday or Thursday. His answer was something like, “We’re in the process of gathering that information, and will release it once we are done.” In other words, no, he hasn’t paid any rent, until now. See what you miss by not watching Fox News.

    Soldier, Yes. Exactly zero.

I'm from san diego, know this fool well. Remember, he's the guy who called for the death penalty for major drug smugglers...and then HIS OWN SON WAS ARRESTED for smuggling several hundred pounds of weed. At which time he started pleading for lenience. I got no problem with the weed, only his dad's hypocrite-with-power position. Let him sizzle, fry and burn. Idiot.

Cunningham's military record is impressive. I'm very disappointed in his civilian acts.

update on cunning***'s "duke stir" rental: He's only paying berthing and maintenance fees (aka 'Dock Fees') on the slip which he already had his boat on. His boat is being refurbished, (wonder who's paying for that?). So IOW he's living rent free on a boat that the ceo of a 'military' contractor owns. The same guy who bought his house for over +$600k in market value. It's only a coincidence that this prev unknown 'military contractor' was to appear in front of his committee. And I'm shocked, shocked to find out that this prev unknown company was suddeny awarded millions for contracts in iraq and even doing "furniture and security" at the WH.

Tens of millions. Hundreds maybe. Last number I saw was $156 million for the current contract, which has been suspended, and the article didn't say how much of the $156 million had been payed out yet.

Let me predict the right-wing response: blah blah Clinton yalloty invasion of privacy smakkity the terrorists win if he doesn't get his boat. Seriously, though, Republican Jesus would be proud.
