Harry Reid: Roberts' Speculation Premature and Laughable

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid issued this statement today (received by e-mail) in response to articles suggesting the Dems have already decided not to fight the Supreme Court nomination of Judge John Roberts:

"All this talk about whether Democrats will support the Roberts nomination is laughably premature. The hearings have not even begun. The White House has so far refused to produce relevant documents, and the documents we have seen raise questions about the nominee's commitment to progress on civil rights.

“John Roberts must still persuade the Senate and the American people that he is a worthy replacement for Justice O'Connor and the jury is still out on that."

    We didn't just fall off the turnip truck, Cliff. We know just as well as conservatives that we won the war for civil rights. However, progress can be undone and there are factions in the conservative movement who are working to ensure that this happens. See also, Social Security. To put it another way: if the House and Senate were populated wholly by clones of Strom Thurmond and Tom Delay, do you think we would see positive or negative developments in regards to civil rights over the next few decades? Explain.

    Harry Reid is a true public servant. I find his plain-spoken approach disarming and I admire his integrity. May many others of all political stripes follow his lead.

    I'd love to know what "progress on civil rights" means these days. It's a great phrase, but what legal barriers really remain? I'd think that if you were looking for legitimate legislative relief for things you think need change then a court less likely to strike down the law is what you'd want. Unless, of course, you didn't believe you were going to be winning a lot of elections any time soon. -C

    scar - What, pray tell, is going on to undo civil rights in this country? Retraction of racial setasides in some situations? School vouchers? Low minimum wage growth rate? -C

    Cliff-howbouts putting someone in jail forever because they looks scary. Oh we save taxpayer $ caus there aint no trial. Giveback Civil Rights Pogrum. catchy?

    Squeaky - What? Do you know what a pogrum is? You probably thought that Peta/Lynching thing was a good idea. I live in the South and I can assure you that there is no shortage of scary looking people that could be locked up.... -C

    squeaky - well, it's a word generally used to describe ethic cleansing of Jews by Russians (or closly allied ethnic groups such as Tartars or Ukranians) and is often used by slightly better educated white supremicists. I was just startled to hear it thrown around that way. Guess I shouldn't have been, my bad. -C

    Cliff-progums of pogrums have made a comeback. It is in much fancier packaging these days samr mentality though.
