Frank Rich Op-ed: Message: I Care About the Black Folks

by Last Night in Little Rock

Today's NY Times has a Frank Rich op-ed piece entitled Message: I Care About the Black Folks, which is about the unmasking of George W. Bush.

Once Toto parts the curtain, the Wizard of Oz can never be the wizard again. He is forever Professor Marvel, blowhard and snake-oil salesman. Hurricane Katrina, which is likely to endure in the American psyche as long as L. Frank Baum's mythic tornado, has similarly unmasked George W. Bush.

The worst storm in our history proved perfect for exposing this president because in one big blast it illuminated all his failings: the rampant cronyism, the empty sloganeering of "compassionate conservatism," the lack of concern for the "underprivileged" his mother condescended to at the Astrodome, the reckless lack of planning for all government operations except tax cuts, the use of spin and photo-ops to camouflage failure and to substitute for action.

. . .

Nor can the president's acceptance of "responsibility" for the disaster dislodge what came before. Mr. Bush didn't cough up his modified-limited mea culpa until he'd seen his whole administration flash before his eyes. His admission that some of the buck may stop with him (about a dime's worth, in Truman dollars) came two weeks after the levees burst and five years after he promised to usher in a new post-Clinton "culture of responsibility." It came only after the plan to heap all the blame on the indeed blameworthy local Democrats failed to lift Mr. Bush's own record-low poll numbers. It came only after America's highest-rated TV news anchor, Brian Williams, started talking about Katrina the way Walter Cronkite once did about Vietnam.

I leave the rest to you: The shameless using of Laura Bush as a shill, Donald Rumsfeld complaining of looters in NOLA while doing nothing to prevent the looting of Iraq by Iraqis, the prime time set up for the speech at Jackson Square by Karl Rove's Imagineers, etc.

George W. Bush? A snake-oil salesman?? Not my hero... Tell me it ain't so!!!

Bush has made it about as clear as it's going to get that he and his cronies view the reconstruction of the Delta as one big patronage party. It's the way they do business (with public money) in Iraq, it's the way they do business (again, with our money) everywhere else, no reason not to continue this policy in Louisiana. But here's the optimistic bit: It's going to be a lot more visible in this case. And maybe this time, people will take more notice.

BLIND LEADERS Passengers on a plane are waiting for the flight to leave. The entrance opens, and two men walk up the aisle, dressed in pilot uniforms. Both are wearing dark glasses. One is using a seeing-eye dog, and the other is tapping his way up the aisle with a cane. Nervous laughter spreads through the cabin, but the men enter the cockpit, the door closes, and the engines start. The passengers begin glancing nervously, searching for some sign that this is just a little practical joke. None is forthcoming. The plane moves faster and faster down the runway, and people at the windows realize that they're headed straight for the water at the edge of the airport. As it begins to look as though the plane will never take off, that it will plow into the water, screams of panic fill the cabin. But at that moment, the plane lifts smoothly into the air. Up in the cockpit, the co-pilot turns to the pilot and says, "You know, Bob, one of these days, they're going to scream too late, and we're all gonna die."

mr. rich's column proves he's even more of a moron than even i gave him credit for. with the exception of momma bush's idiotic, yet, i'm certain, heartfelt comments, mr. rich described, um................iraq. that begs the question: what alternate reality has mr. rich been living in these many years? since mr. rich, and his equally moronic, pseudo-liberal cohort, maureen dowd, were, in large part, responsible for w's election in 2000 and re-election in 2004, i keep waiting, in vain, for their apology to the rest of us. i shan't hold my breath.

cpinva-I took your suggestion and looked up Dowd on Media Matters and have found little to support your claim that Dowd was responsible for Gore and Kerry loss. Two things came up,
A comparison of Dowd to Roll Call executive editor Morton M. Kondracke attacked New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd by comparing her to Christian activist and anti-abortion extremist Randall Terry.
Is that what caused Kerry to lose? How come Terry didn't cause Bush to lose? And the "fake" quote by Kerry regarding NASCAR by Dowd, which made the rounds as a real quote, was that why Kerry's lost? It seems to me that you have something personal against Dowd and Rich, because usually your posts are level headed and rational, with quite a different tone. I think if Kerry and Gore actually did get less votes than Bush, it was because they were not the best picks to beat Bush, I never liked either of them. Giving credit to Rich and Dowd is aggrandizing them and giving them way more power than they have. Do you actually think a swing voter would actually even read Dowd. I never was able to read her until her recent "eulogy" to her late mother, which touched me with its authenticity, a rare thing for 'tongue in cheek all the time' Dowd. Now I read her through a different lens, and often enjoy her columns. Rich on the other hand, regularly gives well deserved smackdowns to the clowns in the WH. The only thing of late that bothers me about him is his fidelity to Saint Judy, that I really do not get..It must be a personal matter for him.

apparently, you didn't look up the info i gave you, or you would have found plenty to dislike about ms. dowd and mr. rich. how could you have possibly missed the "love story" lie? it was big as life during the 2000 election. go back, do some better research, your's was flawed. start with: thedailyhowler.com, and work your way back from there.

Well the big difference here is that the Wizard didn't have a well-honed propaganda machine and a large following of fanatical accomplices (similar to the flying monkeys unleashed by the witch) eager to drop the curtain back down. Also Dorothy and the crew probably didn't have add ADD to the extent the U.S. public does.

oh, btw, i have nothing personal against either rich or dowd, since i don't know them personally. what i do have against them is that they are basically frauds, masquerading as "progressives" or "liberals". with these two on our side, the right-wing doesn't have to work too hard.

cpinva-Yes I also saw the Love story fake quote and other stuff, but I still think Gore and Kerry were just not popular enough by their own merits. It is a big claim that you make. Perhaps you can be more specific as to why they are
frauds, masquerading as "progressives" or "liberals"
. I know that you think I need to do more homework, but since this is not a test I would be able to follow your argument better if you give me something more concrete than just telling me to look harder. 'Cliff notes' are fine for me on this one.

Why does the left take as Gospel Truth anything written by the shills of the NY Times? These are the same limosine liberals who live and dine with the slumlords of the ghetto. Poverty is an abstraction to these people. Do these folks ever go to The Bronx(where I grew up) or to the ghettos which dot this country? They don't even ride the subway where God forbid they might rub elbows with a black or hispanic or heaven help them, a blue collar white guy! "You're judged by the company you keep" is what my dear mother always told me. Bad company is what I see.

LWW-I do not get it either. Dowd is usually using satire. To quote her is like quoting the National Lampoon. I believe that the shills on the right are humorless enough to not see that she is poking fun. Have you read Nicholas Kristof, Bob Herbert or Paul Krugman? Just because they all have jobs doesn''t mean that they are 'Limousine Librals' out of touch and dining with slumlords. The NYT is far from a liberal paper, but there are some fighting the right fight there.

et al - It is so nice for Rich to care. Of course Bush appoints blacks and nominates blacks to positions of real power. Now which one is the best? Can you say, "Show me the money?"

Of course Bush appoints blacks and nominates blacks to positions of real power.
Colin Powell jumped ship after they got him to ruin his rep forever in front of the world. He will shudder and cringe whenever he thinks of this administration and his part in it. If recent performance is any indication, "Imelda" Rice has no real power except when it comes to ejecting people out of expensive shoe stores.

a Newsday analysis of federal personnel records for September 2000 and September 2002 concluded that when political appointments that don't require Senate confirmation are counted, "[b]lacks held 7 percent of administration jobs under Bush, less than half of the 16 percent they held under Clinton," and blacks held only 6 percent of "senior executive posts" under Bush, compared to 13 percent under Clinton.
Link I doubt that the numbers have changed much since 2002.

DA - So your point is that Bush just appoints them to get Senate cornfirmation? I am LOL. Ernie - Whatever he did, or didn't do, the fact remains that he was Bush's Sec of State.

DA - So, you want fewer power positions? BTW - I'd love to get back into a spelling contest with you. Wanna play?
