Former White House Official Arrested

The latest casualty of the Bush Administration is one with ties to indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff:

A former Bush administration official was arrested Monday on charges he made false statements and obstructed a federal investigation into his dealings with lobbyist Jack Abramoff, according to court documents and government officials.

David Safavian, then-chief of staff of the General Services Administration and a former Abramoff lobbying associate, concealed from federal investigators that Abramoff was seeking to do business with GSA when Safavian joined him on a golf trip to Scotland in 2002, according to an FBI affidavit and the officials.

Atrios provides some important context.

So, the guy who oversees federal contracts gets arrested. Turns out he's a good buddy of Jack "Love Me Some Tom DeLay" Abramoff. As he was on the job through last week he must've had a hand in setting the Katrina procurement procedures, including allowing people to go ahead and charge up to $250,000 at a time on their credit cards. He's also, well, another hack with no experience in his field.

Mr. Safavian's wife? Oh, that's Jennifer Safavian. Her job? Chief counsel on oversight and investigations on the House Government Reform Committee. Their latest job? Heading up the sham Katrina investigation...

The Washington Post has more on Mr. Safavian. Also, the Federal Times (November 10, 2003) reported (available on Lexis.com):

If nominee David Safavian is confirmed by the Senate to oversee federal procurement policy at the Office of Management and Budget, one of those in Congress responsible for overseeing him would be his wife, a top aide on the House Government Reform Committee.

Safavian is married to Jennifer Safavian, who serves as the committee's chief counsel for oversight and investigations. The committee, chaired by Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., oversees federal procurement. Davis spokesman David Marin said the congressman welcomed Safavian's nomination as federal procurement policy administrator at the Office of Management and Budget and anticipates a productive relationship.

To avoid a conflict of interest, Federal Times reports,

Safavian’s wife, Jennifer McLaughlin Safavian, serves under House Government Reform Committee Chairman Tom Davis, R-Va., as chief counsel for oversight and investigations. To avoid any conflict of interest, she has entered into an agreement with the committee that would recuse her from any pending business dealing with procurement policy.

To be fair, the article also notes that Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) endorsed Mr. Safavian for the job.

Didn't he just resign last week? If so "Former White House Official" is putting a good (for the WH) spin on it.

Just curious. Did he work for the administration, or did he work in the White House? Makes a difference when you read the header. You know, assignment of blame, slanted news, etc.

PPJ- Some more smear, actually more like generous gobs so thick that they are drowning in their own slime. Some quotes from the links below:
Kafka: Oh? Well what about zees, Herr Twain: What if zat verrückt president of yours tried to fill a critical homeland security post with a 36-year-old lawyer whose main credentials for ze job are zat she once worked for Ken Starr, and is der niece of Herr General Dick Myers? Twain: OK, you got me there, Franz. Not even an idiot or a congressman -- I repeat myself -- would fall for a damnfool yarn like that. Not after Katrina. Now tell me the one about the fellow who turned into a cockroach again.

The Office of Federal Procurement Policy handles procurement policy for the White House's Office of Management and Budget. Until Friday the Administrator of the office was David Hossein Safavian.
and Mr. Safavian's wife? Oh, that's Jennifer Safavian. Her job? Chief counsel on oversight and investigations on the House Government Reform Committee. Safavian worked for Jack Abramoff at Preston Gates? He's also a former business partner of Grover Norquist.
Safavian was put in charge of procurement policy for the entire f**king government, despite having virtually no procurement experience (other than his brief patronage gig at GSA).

Squeak - And your point is? Look, we know that scandals exist, and have since time begain. Do I need to play the Clinton card again? My point was simple. Did the guy work inside the White House, which is what the title of the post very directly says. Can you give me a straightforward answer, yes or no? If the answer is no, the bias is confirmed. Which is okay, because this is a blog, and we all know that blogs - right and left - are biased.

ppj-My point is to spell it out for our lowest common denominator, aka you. Unless your question:
Just curious. Did he work for the administration, or did he work in the White House?
was insincere and intended to just waste space.

More stuff for Jim to thunk over:
David H. Safavian, the Bush administration official arrested Monday, initially failed to disclose lobbying work he had done for several controversial foreign clients when he went before a Senate panel last year to be confirmed as chief of the White House's federal procurement office.
The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee held up Safavian's nomination for more than a year, in part because of lawmakers' concerns about lobbying work for two men later accused of links to suspected terrorist organizations, according to committee documents. Safavian did not disclose his firm's representation of the men until questioned in writing by the committee's staff, and initially failed to tell the panel he had registered as a foreign agent for two controversial African regimes.
Like Abramoff, Safavian is a veteran Washington player. He is a former lobbying partner of anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist and previously worked with Abramoff at another firm.
Norquist, Abramov, and Dana Rohrbacker have all done work for men now associated with terrorism.
Starting in 1998, Norquist put his considerable political skills in the service of such Islamists as Abdurahman Alamoudi and Sami al-Arian.
Today, both Alamoudi and al-Arian are in jail on terrorism-related charges. Alamoudi is serving a 23-year sentence, having pled guilty to conspiring with Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi to kill the then-crown prince of Saudi Arabia. Last month, the U.S. Treasury Department announced, "The September 2003 arrest of Alamoudi was a severe blow to al-Qaida, as Alamoudi had a close relationship with al-Qaida and had raised money for al-Qaida in the United States."
I'll leave off the data on the other two terrorist-advisors who the rightwing thinks are just peachy, for bandwidth.

You people do not understand what a political appointee is or how the Executive branch works. Every Administration (not necessarily the President personally) APPOINTS officials to serve in leadership positions at AGENCIES. Obviously, if they are leading an agency, they aren't working inside the White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. When the press links Safavian with the White House, all they mean is that he is a political appointee as opposed to a career civil servant in the senior executive service. The only revelance here is that OMB is part of the Executive branch, not Congress. So, the scandal related to Abramoff has reached from Congress to the President's administration.
