Chertoff Crony Nominated to Head Immigration

The Bush Administration continues its policy of handing out top Administration jobs based on cronyism. Did it not learn from Michael Brown? Apparently, not.

The latest: A 36 year old Administration lawyer named Julie Myers, who has no immigration experience, has been nominated to head up ICE, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security. Let's look at Ms. Myers' credentials - the last paragraph is key:

After working as a federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, N.Y., for two years, Myers held a variety of jobs over the past four years at the White House and at the departments of Commerce, Justice and Treasury, though none involved managing a large bureaucracy. Myers worked briefly as chief of staff to Michael Chertoff when he led the Justice Department's criminal division before he became Homeland Security secretary.

Myers also was an associate under independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr for about 16 months and has most recently served as a special assistant to President Bush handling personnel issues.

Her uncle is Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, the departing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. She married Chertoff's current chief of staff, John F. Wood, on Saturday.

Even the ICE agents' union is unhappy:

"It appears she's got a tremendous amount of experience in money laundering, in banking and the financial areas," said Charles Showalter, president of the National Homeland Security Council, a union that represents 7,800 ICE agents, officers and support staff. "My question is: Who the hell is going to enforce the immigration laws?"

Perhaps Bush is a closet liberal. His goal in choosing her could be to have her not do her job, thereby increasing the numbers of illegal laborers in the U.S. and driving down U.S. wages.

Charlie I'll tell you what it fits in with, it fits in with the Bush administration being a sink of corruption, sloth and incompetence. Apparently these fools want to prove their point about big government by sabotaging vital federal responsibilities at every opportunity. Next they'll be proposing to turn over immigration enforcement responsibility to the private sector. This would be funny if having an unqualified ICE director fumbling around the dark didn't have the possibility for such dire consequences. All the pseudo libertarians who voted for Bush are now pointing at the federal government and saying, look how incompetent they are, they're not able to do anything effectively, what's the point in having the federal government to oversee anything? Of course they're blinded by their own glaring hypocrisy. ------------------------ BigMediaBlog The new cry coming from the far right GOP is that Bush is actually a liberal, apparently solely founded on his recent conciliatory speeches. We must assume that this is a rather feeble attempt at trying to distance themselves from this ridiculously failed administration in the hopes of salvaging something in the 2006 elections. In fact I have to say that the Bush administration, in light of this little Katrina disaster and Iraq, has done more to damage the conservative movement than anything the liberals and Democrats were capable of doing. I'd say it's quite likely that the Republicans will lose the Senate in 2006 as a direct result of recent events. And I think it's quite possible that we'll have a Democrat in the White House in 2008. Before this Katrina debacle I would've never even considered those possibilities.

F*ck Bush, and F*ck Julie Myers. Is there anyone near this administration with any sense of real responsibility. At what point does an ADULT stand up and say, enough, I am not qualified for this. Especially, as TL stated, after the Arabian Horse Coward, Michael Brown, committed the most egregious act of professional negligence this nation has seen in decades.
