Super Bowl Sunday, and I Don't Care

by Last Night in Little Rock

Today is Super Bowl Sunday. This is Super Bowl XL. (Is that extra large or 40 in roman numerals? Will the Super Bowl in 2206 be 2XL?) I remember watching "the Super Bowl" in my college dorm in 1967. They hadn't yet had to number them.

This will be at least the 30th consecutive year I have not watched the Superbowl. It's always a good time to go to a movie and not worry about crowds.

I know: I'll miss the allegedly great commercials and Janet Jackson's boob. I can catch them on the Internet later.

Me neither. I do have some gay friends who love it although they know nothing about the game.

I never watch it. Although I will want to see the Stones at half-time.

I cannot imagine any reason to watch a football game. Or a baseball game or a basketball game or . . .

For the 15th year in a row I'll be headed over to the same friend's house to watch the game. It's more about the "What have you been up to" chatter than it is football, and it gives me a chance to make my famous crab dip.

I have a ReplyTV (like Tivo only better). One of the features is that it (pretty reliably) will skip over commercials. One of the little known features is that you can invert that and skip over the program an only show commercials. I use that feature exactly once a year -- I record the game and only watch the commercials. :)

    The WSWS comments:
Detroit is the host city of this year's Super Bowl, the championship game of American professional football. The annual contest, which will be played this Sunday between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks, has in recent years become something of a national phenomenon, almost a national rite. Proper obeisance must be paid to it. The mass media, as it does every year, has been informing the population for weeks that it can hardly wait until "Super Sunday," when "Super Parties" will break out everywhere. Detroit is a particularly inappropriate locale for a celebration. Largely a barracks for the automobile industry, the city rose and fell in the twentieth century, epitomizing in the sharpest manner the decline of American industry.

Superbowl night! Time for the annual Non-Superbowl party: potluck, board games, and B-movies (the worse, the better)

I guess its trendy in circles like this to brag about how out of touch you are with mainstream America. And you wonder why you lose elections. Today, I'll be in front of the tube, PBR in hand, with pretzels, wings and a nice fat NY strip at the ready.

One thing I worry about during every Superbowl it the tremendous potential for disaster that is looming during the commercial breaks and especially at the end of the second quarter of the game. I think it was Martha Rosler who brought it to my attention in her essay "The Birth and Death of the Viewer: On the Public Function of Art." I could be wrong about the attribution as I loaned my copy of the essay and never got it back, so I cannot check. She pointed out that the colossal power of all the toilets in America flushing at once (halftime) could cause our entire sewer system to collapse. Can't wait until the game is over so I can feel safe again, that is until next year.

Hate to break it to you but your wll be joined by other red-blooded Americans who are on the left as well as a good deal of red-blooded Americans who know nothing about football but like to see all those guys humping each other in skin tight uniforms. Those who are uninterested in football, myself included, are clearly a tiny minority and span all political and sexual leanings. Have fun, don't choke on the pretzel or whatever it is you are eating.

Squeaky, I'm duty bound to point out that the "toilets flushing at halftime" legend is false. See the first item at Snopes.

We'll be watching it. I'm a lefty, and a woman, and an English professor, but still. My dad is a big sports fan and I always watched sports on TV with him as a kid. And I grew up in Detroit, so the game being there is interesting, too--problematic, but interesting. I was one of few girls in my high school who actually understood the rules and plays called at sporting events. In fact, I was a cheerleader in junior high, and I was the only one who could tell if we were on offense or defense during a football game. When I was in college, my smart, smug friends used to denigrate sports, and for awhile I stopped watching, thinking it was something that cultured, educated people didn't do, but as a grownup I came to realize that I enjoyed it, so who the hell cared if it was cool or uncool or whatever? While I see the problems associated with professional sports, and they are legion, for whatever reason I enjoy some sports, football in particular. I don't see that it's one of those things to get all worked up about, either way. Certainly not important in the face of all the world's serious issues.

Squeaky, I know you are right. Just wanted to get a rise out of the gang. Jen, Can't say that I agree with you about the World Cup thing. Its about as exciting to me as watching my cat sleep. But, so likes the world, so hate I,

dwine, you bleed kelly green too? Good man. I have promised myself to drop everything and attend the Super Bowl if the Jets ever make it back. I just hope I get the chance in my lifetime to keep that promise. It's not looking to promising. Congrats to Pittsburgh...and to the superior AFC conference for bringing the trophy home.
