Tuesday Open Thread

Yesterday belonged to Moussaoui and the Feingold censure resolution. What will it be today? Here's a start, feel free to add on:

  • Arianna rips Marie Brenner's Vanity Fair article on PlameGate
  • Atrios on Religion and Politics
  • Josh Marshall says former Bush Aide Claude Allen may use the "evil twin defense" in his shoplifting case
  • Raw Story gets an awesome bloglift (y.w.c.t.p.)
  • Skippy says the "wartime president defense" (meaning don't attack the President during war time) is lame.
  • Patriot Daily, whose proprietors spend all day combing the news and have been extremely helpful to TalkLeft in e-mailing me with headlines I might otherwise miss, is in danger of shutting down due to financial difficulties. If you can send them a few dollars, via their tip jar on the left side of their site, they would greatly appreciate it.
  • The ladies at Firedoglake rake Joe Lieberman over the coals for his position on emergency contraception. Any time you hear somone mention Joltin Joe, make sure you also mention his new challenger, Ned Lamont, a man with true Democratic, American values.

Your turn now.

Love the evil twin thing. Was just thinking that if I had a twin who sometimes misbehaved, the temptation to go astray myself would be overwhelming since I could just blame it on her! I wonder if anyone else has had this thought... (In addition, Claude Allen's twin is black, so it's much easier to believe that he's a bad guy. What a stroke of luck.)

The last two F-14 Tomcat squadrons returned from cruise on Saturday. The Tomcats are being retired after 36 years of service. The squadrons return featured a 22 aircraft flyby. Sort of sad.

Gee, does that mean we should let the Dukester out to lead a squadron of F-4s? Life goes on. They've gone the way of the F-86s, the P-51s, and the Corsairs. Feelin' nostalgic? Go to an air show. Nobody wastes money like the Pentagon. Nobody. PBS could kiss Pledge Drives goodbye forever in the time it takes to type NOBODY.

    From Cheryl Seals 'Green Issues':
Righwingnut alert! If you are traveling through Kansas, home of "Dark Ages Education," you are likely to see a slick big billboard along the highway directing you to this website: www.scienceprovesit.com The rightwingnut promoters of ignorance who brought you the site and the billboard were also behind the stacking of the Kansas board of education with their reps and thereby allowing creationism to take equal billing with evolution.
If you go to the site you'll see a short (about 30 second) flash movie that near the end displays these two timeless jewels of inspiration and enlightenment:
Science is NOT the search for truth. Naturalism is more important than reality.
Ummm... if you've ever wondered "when will they learn?" when dealing with these nuts... well, the answer is "probably never".

Yeah, edge, these people are so different from the taliban. The only reason they don't lop off heads is because they've always been more of a Lynch mob, burn 'em at the stake, kinda crowd.

Interesting tidbit from the world of SouthPark. CHEF This reminds me of when Roger Ebert got all worked up and couldnt believe that someone could actually make fun of actors who won't stop dumping their politics on us.

The campaign to bring domestic partnerships to Colorado, giving same-sex couples all of the state rights and responsibilities that married couples enjoy, is in full swing and the hate mail has already started trickling in from around the country. We got one yesterday that was so horrid and bizarre that it went right to the FBI (we're talking Unabomber material here). But for those who are interested in helping us fight James Dobson's marriage ban while offering a positive alternative in the form of domestic partnerships, you can volunteer and donate online. It's already clear that we're going to face all kinds of right-wing extremists who want to attack us not just politically but personally. And yesterday's letter made it clear that there are still people in this country who want not only to take away our liberty but to take away our lives. So toss in a few bucks and help us out. And if you don't have a few bucks to give, write us some love mail. We have a hate mail wall and a love mail wall, and the hate mail wall is filling up (though yesterday's was so amazingly bad that it's not going up there). So far there's nothing on the love mail wall--it's waiting for you!

Great link, Wile E, but I'm saving my hankies for when the F15s go (please, not for a long, long time!) They are older than I am and yet still going strong. Definitely a feat of engineering. Yes, Charlie, such aricraft are impossibly expensive and ceratinly very difficult for this pacifist to justify, but give us a break - every girl has a weakness and aircraft are better than shopping (although shoes are another matter.)

but one minor nuance, please. i am not advocating that the idea "don't attack a president in time of war" is lame, i'm saying that this president specifically has no moral right to hide behind that position.

Who's gettin' worked up? Funny how the likes of you and jp and jim and yada, yada, yada are always accusing everyone of readin' stuff into comments you make yet that's all I ever hear outta you guys. Hey, you wanna think Team America and South Park vindicates your world view and makes those guys bush leaguers, knock yourself out. I don't give a damn. We'll just add that to the list of things you're wrong about. They just like yankin' peoples chains, that's all, but whatever makes you happy.

I'm extremely disappointed to see zero coverage on Talk Left regarding Inquisitor Gonzales' subpoena to Google for search requests and Google's rather surprising effort to thwart it. NPR Story After gleefully following Yahoo and Microsoft's lead in allowing China to censor search requests, Google now decides to protect our privacy? Nope. They're protecting their own privacy. They're protecting their own "proprietary technology". When the day comes that the search requests of individual citizens - via IP - are demanded by the New American Inquisition, Google will happily -- and QUIETLY -- forward them along and place an obscure footnote buried deep in it's "Privacy Notice" as a precaution against litigation. I know, I know. So long as you're not a child molester, you haven't anything to worry about. Kind of like the hundreds of American Street Gang participants that recently found themselves arrested with the help of the newly Democratic Party rubber-stamped Patriot Act. Yep - 562 arrested, 76 charged. Arrests Operation Community Shield Alien Gang Removal Act /w/ "O.C.S." No, these Conservatives would NEVER abuse the spirit of a law or lie to the American people about it's purpose. I always knew it had to be more than a co-inky-dink that Tookie Williams, Sadaam Hussein, and Osama Bin Laden had all been seen eating together at a South Los Angeles Fat Burger, plotting a crime spree. Quick..someone check the trunk of that '74 Monte Carlo on blocks in Compton for Yellow Cake and Aluminum Tubes!

Slado, it actually reminds me of the fact that Hayes didn't complain until they made fun of scientology. Catholics, Jews, evangelicals, no problem ... his religion 'I quit!' They way you connected religion to politics was just a strawman to inject your dubious bugaboo about actors and politics. BTW, how'd you feel about ronnie raygun?

Since this is an open thread, I'm wondering why a list of a certain commenter continually violating TL's rules was deleted? I mean all I did was post his own comments calling others illiterate, unable to comprehend, ignorant, stupid, nut cases, ethnic insults ... ad nauseum. So why was my post deleted but this commenters insults are allowed every day? IOW, what exactly does it take to get banned around here? Or, as we used to say in Hollywood, who do I have to f#@! to get off this movie?

According to CBS News yesterday the military is planning to increase the number of troops deployed to Iraq. Yesterday was one of the worse days of the war including the discovery of 80 bodies, some of which were found in a mass grave dug under a children's soccer field. So where was George? Doing a photo op. Because to Bush, this crisis isn't primarily about Iraq but Bush's popularity.

TalkLeft, I am fascinated by the Susan Polk case because he was her therapist, she was 16 and his patient when they became involved, he was 42 and married, she is representing herself and probably blowing any chance she might have, all the women who are serving life sentences for murdering their abusive husbands, she is using her cross examination of her son as if she was conducting a family group therapy session. I could go on and on. I wish you could come to California and defend her!
