Pres. Bush Supports English As National Language

by Last Night in Little Rock

The Senate voted to make English the "national" or "common" language, according to CNN.com. Press Secretary Tony Snow said that the President supports it, too.

Too bad the Senate cannot make minimal competence in the language a requirement, too.

Back to school....or jail. Pfeizer is working on a pill but the FDA has blocked funds for research because Haliburton complained.

NEWSFLASH - 450AD. The Roman senate voted 63-34 Thursday to designate Latin as the "national language" after lawmakers who led the effort said it would promote national unity. "This will ensure that the Italian people will continue to speak Latin for thousands of years to come and the language will be perpetuated," said the Senator from Oklahomus, Jamus Jackass.

    no intiendo.

By all means, let's have an English-language literacy test for presidential candidates.

hmmm, Bush or Quayle, not sure which one of these are the foremost expert in the national language...does spelling count?

That's pretty funny coming from a guy who speaks like this:
"I aim to be a competitive nation."
"If the Iranians were to have a nuclear weapon they could proliferate."
"And so I'm for medical liability at the federal level."
"I hope you go you know I hope you go back to the ranch and the farm is what I'm about to say."
"The best place for the facts to be done is by somebody who's spending time investigating it
    And many more.

Next up on the agenda to be sanctified by the RNC: Judeo-Christianity: official (or common) religion Hetero: official (or common) sexual orientation Testosterone: official (or common) psycho-active drug And from now on the word "football" is officially (or commonly) used to describe American football. The other sport referred to by that name by the rest of the world will be officially (or commonly) called "soccer" in the United States and its imperial possessions. Also, wasting tax payers dollars hyping wedge issues is hereby declared the official (or common) activity of Congress during election years.

a nuclear weapon pronounced Noo-cue-ler i had a boss that i had great respect for until i heard him use this particular utterance.

The 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo between Mexico and the United States guarantees the people of the southwestern part of the (now) US "The right to maintain their religion and their language." I'm not sure how making English official or semiofficial may work in other parts of the country, but in the southwest it would be a violation of the terms of that treaty. Spanish is guaranteed under federal jurisdiction in that area of the country, and cannot be overridden by an act of congress. The Supreme Court would have to abrogate the treaty to do that. And politically, I don't think congress really wants to slap Mexico THAT hard in the face.

    Excerpts from the NM constitution:
Article II § 5. The rights, privileges and immunities, civil, political and religious guaranteed to the people of New Mexico by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo shall be preserved inviolate.
And that's as valuable as the paper it's printed on.
Article VII § 3. The right of any citizen of the state to vote, hold office or sit upon juries, shall never be restricted abridged or impaired on account of religion, race, language or color, or inability to speak, read or write the English or Spanish languages except as may be otherwise provided in this constitution...
Article XII § 8. The legislature shall provide for the training of teachers in the normal schools or otherwise so that they may become proficient in both the English and Spanish languages, to qualify them to teach Spanish-speaking pupils and students in the public schools and educational institutions of the state, and shall provide proper means and methods to facilitate the teaching of the English language and other branches of learning to such pupils and students.

The Socialist Equality Party unequivocally condemns the vote by the Senate on Thursday to make English the "national language" of the United States. The measure, added to the Senate immigration "reform" bill, is the but latest in a series of reactionary, ignorant and short-sighted moves aimed at shoring up the right-wing base of the Bush administration and the Republican Party, with the most far-reaching and anti-democratic implications. The proposal is a sop to right-wing and fascistic elements who are working to whip up intolerance and hatred against immigrants in general, and Hispanic Americans in particular. It underscores the deeply undemocratic and unconstitutional essence of all of the measures being enacted in the name of "securing the border."
