Soprano's Open Thread: Show 11

The Sopranos is about to begin.

Tonight's episode is "Cold Stones":

A frenzy of borrowing money hits the crew; Carmela waxes philosophical on a trip with Rosalie; Meadow relocates.

It has to be winding down for the season, but so far there hasn't been that much action. Let us know what you think of tonight's episode.

David Chase had a writing credit, and just in time. i was growing concerned with the Vito thing getting so much play. tonight was gratifying, if not creepy. there are so many layers to this onion...the Vito saga was a rouse. the tit-for-tat offing of made guys is going to have grave consequences...all-out war, perhaps? with Phil's ego, and old-school management style, it may be time to settle up all old debts in his eyes. he'll try to further solidify his position in New York through the suffering of New Jersey. TS is smarter, though. he has endeavored to find solutions out of the box for other dilemmas; new thinking for a new age of mobster. and he has always lived to fight another day. not even death has stopped him, how will New York? i believe AJ will be lost to Tony somehow before this is over. it's like the scene in Godfather I when Michael asks his mother whether he could lose his family by protecting the other. which family survived in that story? which one will Tony ultimately fight for, to the destruction of the other? the comment Carmela made about AJ having a look of death about him that gave her a cold chill was...chilling. followed by her conversation with Rosalie about losing Jackie Jr....perhaps a foretelling? or will Tony, as i once naively held, have everything despite his failings, and live happily ever after?

I kind of thought this season would mean that one of the kids would have to go. If Meadow moves away, and something bad happens to AJ, then the marriage between Tony and Carm will be on the rocks again for a much longer period. If TS has anything to do with what happens to AJ, Carm will not forgive him, but if not, then she may not forgive herself.

Vito's death, Tony's silence at the shrinks office..the show was tying up loose ends in anticipation of the last episode..but wait..its not the last episode! They said for this year it is the last episode..I thought the show was ending after this next episode? I am so confused :P

dusty, i knew that they will be coming back for a final 8 episodes after this season. i was told they would air in December. so...great, another short season to wrap up the tale, but unfortunately they wont be til 2007. we've been hustled! feel like they moved into my house and took over my cable service. probably those Bright House boys are behind this....

Supa, AJ will be the undoing of AJ. his dad can only do so much, i think that has been well documented. AJ is on a classic tragic trajectory. he'll not be redeemed, methinks. Carmela...realizes she bought her ticket, and willingly takes the ride. i believe tonight she saw the futility of blaming herself for what has befallen her family. i think she let go of something profound tonight, or at least stared it down. her fears?

It's just so wonderful to watch the flow of the show and the outstanding acting. Tony smashing the football helmet into AJ's windsheild...AJ meekly heading off to work at 7:00am. Tony eyeballing Carm as he tries to feign sleep, every minute is packed with suspense. But two great whackings (the guy flying backwards onto the kitchen table) in one show, what more can you ask for. I so miss it when it's not on!

weezie, a slave to the details you are, as am i. its all about the rythym, and each character has his own (Christopher pouring his glass of wine into his soup and barging off in seasons past...). my favorite was uncle jun...will they bring him back for a curtain call?

I have a feeling something bad is going to happen to AJ on the construction site. Remember the show from earlier in the season when a kid went to work with his dad in the truck and the dad got killed? And Carmela saying tonight she can't imagine what it would be like to lose a child? And her preoccupation with the religious statues in Paris? (at least they seemed religious to me, I'm no art student.) In prior seasons, it seemed like she lived for the church. Is she going to get all re-religious-ized? This was a great episode tonight, not one boring moment and filled with action. Next week should be even better, there will have to be some kind of cliff-hanger for the next season. Ratings are down this year and I think it's because of the long hiatuses. Commander in Chief was doing great till they took an overly long break and now its canceled. Although the writing went downhill after they switched writers in midstream, so who knows. There are so many unresolved story lines this season, it's hard to believe they can wrap them up with just one more show. Then it's wait until December. Cruel.

Can we imagine what it takes to do these episodes? Its like making a movie. These episodes are so in depth, and have so much reality in them. There are no boz scenes in the Sopranos, the characters and scenes are made to look like everyday life. The actors are superb, and I am sure that there are many takes that have to be done to get what they want. I can understand why there are so few episodes, but I thought that they would at least keep going for at least 10 yrs or more. Anyway, maybe they will do a movie to cap things off in a couple of years... But what will we do without the Sopranos?

Ya know I just thought of something... While the Sopranos may go away for a while, I can see it making a return. I dont think we will lose it, it will just be away for a while.

Carmela wore five different winter coats in Paris. That's a lot of luggage.

aw, a keen eye, and a great comment! Carmela of the "High Class Problems", to quote her.... Im really not sure what surprises she holds yet in this drama, but she will be pivotal, im certain. TL... was the scene you refer where the garbage driver brought his son to work with him? the driver was beaten by members of a New York crew stealing the routes? if so, that particular business venture (Barone Sanitation) was a hot button issue between NJ and NY. now, to Tony's strong objection, Phil is trying to decrease the number of "no-show" jobs on a particular construction sight (it wasnt mentioned which) just as Tony has arranged for a construction job for AJ. grist for the mill. i can see AJ's tragic end in this tumult between Families if he were to ironically enter his father's world despite T's efforts to protect him from it. AJ doesnt have to die for this to come to fruition, necessarily, either. one arc would simply have AJ following in his his father's footsteps after all; the construction job just a slippery slope, and AJ's current predilection towards a "something for nothing" lifestyle providing the grease. i can hear the pride in Tony's voice... "He's a good earner".

OFF TOPIC - Did anyone else see Baghdad ER this weekend? I think every voting age american should see it, puts the war in a better perspective. Perhaps the directors were spinning but it was telling how the medical professionals were critical of the war (openly) and the grunts were of the "just doing my job" mentality. Great show and very sad.
